If I one day start playing with FPGA programming etc., I would start by building a RAM controller on a FPGA. I have not ran out of memory on SAM yet, but the day comes... When it happens, it would be nice if the SWAP partition would be on a physical RAM memory.

Also, bootable RAD drive would also be nice on a separate memory.

I think there are RAM controllers freely available, to be programmed on FPGAs.

I think that’s only possible if you write kernel module that is loaded first.
The kernel module most then creates a SWAP partition at cold boot, it’s a bit tricky.

@NutsAboutAmiga

I'd like to have minimig into the fpga, there is also the possibilty to expand the current fpga on sam with the expansion pin available.. it would be cool to run adf disk image directly on os4 and sam using fpga

@nubechecorre

I read Amiga DD disk on my AmigaONE
it's not a problem, you just need the CW MK4.

Ok. After I've done the HW I call frieden brothers.

Other than that:
Learning FPGA programming would not be too stupid hobby. I just do the Helloworld first.

update: helloworld is done

Added:
-XCore emulator (or only XCore I/O emulator)
-Xorro pin functions

update, added "simple GFX output to a LCD screen (no need for GFX card in the very lowend)"

It can be done on xcore but most likely also by the lattice.

(example of GFX (+audio+demo) done without any display card, with 8kt ROM and 1kt RAM and 20Mhz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNCqrylNY-0 )

If it could be programmed to be a floppy disk controller to read off old Amiga floppy disks then I would be a lot more interested in the Sam than I am now.

Anyone starting a bounty for this? I would consider donating.

FINALLY I got my SAM440EP !

It has FPGA expansion / I/O connector in place.

(someone said that the connector would be missing)

congrats & welcome to the club ..I'm also waiting for expansions to the Samflex...Amiga=modding

it already works great with glUAE by saimo ..not sure about RunInUAE (Chris chime in)

Well I might in the future need some sort of gate/entrance controller.
And I would love to use amiga as a base for that. I guess the FPGA would be perfect for that, since I would not need a lot of CPU power.

The price of the main board does not really matter, since a total gate cost a lot..

I might know more later this year.

@KimmoK

Note that SAM 460 board has similar implementation

Lattice XP2 FPGA with 80 I/O pins expansion connector (connector is optional)
And there is FPGA Resource for OS4

@Darth_X

Contact E3B as to whether he would be interested in filling a bounty where the Catweasel controller is retrofitted into the Sam440/Sam460 Lattice XP2 FPGA... since this would also work towards some parts of the Classic Chipset being retrofitted to the newer machines as well.

I would certainly be interested in hooking up an older External Amiga Floppy drive to be used with a sam440ep and reading any older Amiga or non-Amiga disks with that.

or update the Catweasal controller for "gary" style trackdisk.device functionality and provide access up to 4GB using an SDcard or micro-SD card slot (no need for anything fancy to do this)

it would really help with Classic compatability as well as future access as well.

Example of what can be done with the xena:
http://edablog.com/2010/10/27/audio-visual-bridging/
http://www.xmos.com/products/development-kits/avbl2
http://www.xmos.com/products/development-kits/usbaudio2mc (localbus instead of USB...)
http://www.xmos.com/products/development-kits/usbaudio2su (audio and MIDI)

(replace JTAG and ethernet with nemo CPU localbus and you get the picture)

When ported to xena, we then could have "our own" audio HW to go with some future motherboards.

Anyone started any developments with SAM FPGA or xena?

This kind of 3D led cube would look suberb...
