One thing is certainly eyebrowraising: the figure for 32k buffer. For some reason it drops to slightly above 8k buffer throughput. |
Yes, perhaps it likes it. IIRC my drive has an 8MB cache.

Whether WD drives are slow, in the sense of being typically or proverbially slow, I don't know. To me they seem to be average. But, hey, to devellope a correct statistically based opinion, I would like to have more different figures! |
We need more examples. They seem to be avergae with other drives over a1ide PIO mode. But Spirantho's WD result was intersting. |

| Results from my 2.5" ~80G Seagate 7200rpm drive & SAM440ep @ Mhz & Quick fix IDE drivers.
Seagate Momentus 7200.3 80GB SATA2 16MB -------------------Unit 0 information------------------------ Flags : $000001C5 - present, supports DMA, ATA, supports power mgmt, supports cache flush, interrupts used, Xfer mode : best pio 12 (PIO 4, 16 MB/s) / best dma 70 (UDMA 6, 133 MB/s) / current 70 (UDMA 6, 133 MB/s) Total blocks : 156301488 Blocksize : 512 Power mode : 2 / idle (ready for operation) IO1 / IO2 / BMCR @ : $1100 / $110A / $1120

Testing with a 65536 byte, MEMF_FAST, LONG-aligned buffer. Read from SCSI: 91409612 bytes/sec
65536 byte test speed varies a little between 91M and 93M...
As it seems, 2.5" drives are not that much slower than 3.5" drives.
The main annoyance of A4k was the slow IDE performance (2MB/sec), but SAM delivers what I want.
some extra speed info... CubeBM 897fps @ default window size Stream memspeed - read RAM 262MB/sec L1 2GB/sec - memset0 RAM 986MB/s L1 13GB/s IIRC, A4k A3640 had very slow mem speed and CS060MK2 gives some tens of megabytes.
It's funny that when I click lha extract, I see no progress bar, I have to verify the target folder to see if it worked or not. I like ! Last edited by KimmoK on 11-May-2009 at 08:07 PM. After installing QF 53.8:

Testing with a 65536 byte, MEMF_FAST, LONG-aligned buffer. Read from SCSI: 35805593 bytes/sec
Conclusion: Not much has changed in this respect. Sidenote: The system locked up solid and I had to apply a full reboot for 4(!) times.

Here's mine, A1G4XE (non 'fixed'), Western Digital 500GB drive, OS4.1 with the latest update (from a few days ago).

I changed 'unit' from 0 to 1. I think 0 is my Linux drive.

When looking at the figures so far, it is quite clear that SAM leads the charts with a wide margin. Especially in combo with a Seagate drive, throughput is extremely high:62Mb @ 8kb, 83Mb @ 16kb, 99Mb @ 32kb and a whopping 107Mb @ 64kb buffersize.
I'm still curious however how a combo of SAM and a WD Raptor would perform. Anyone fancy a test?
Anyway, have the figures come in, please!

Sometime after I enabled UDMA, my Western Digital 250 GB hard drive developed problems, appears to be slow to spin up on power on.
I went back to PIO mode so long ago, that this drive has spent more time operating in PIO mode than it ever operated in UDMA mode.
System operating in autodetect mode on onboard VIA controller. DVD-ROM drive = master on primary bus WD hard drive = master on secondary bus

Thank you for your report. Congratulations with your figures: they are the highest to date. Especially in top hand looks darn interesting! The SSD's show here too to be very fast. Interesting devices, very interesting.

Would be very interesting to see what figures one gets with a drive in PIO mode in comparisson to what Antique (post #72) has reported here. Wouldn't it be time for you to consider a new HD for your µA1? Or are there plans to dump the µA1 over time, go for a SAM460 or even an X1000 with an SSD device attached to it?
My µA1 will probably be ditched this summer as I surely will buy either a SAM460 or an X1000 and indeed hook an SSD device to the newling. (Drool, drool.)

| Now when x1000's SB600 has got DMA, it would be nice to see speed results also for x1000 setups.

I wonder if the driver currently does only SATA1 DMA... or is the HDD the limiting factor. At least with some fast SSD drive I would expect to see 200+MB/sec (the worlds fastest PPC desktop HDD drive speed ever?).
Then we would head towards RAID setups with x1000, to get 400MB/sec.
@thread It would also be interesting to know how amiga systems compete with PPC Macs: http://www.barefeats.com/hard78.html
copy dh0:1gb-dummyfile.bin to dh0:1gb-dummyfile2.bin + the timing command that I do not remember now
(I imagine file system (SFS), buffer settings and block size can make bigger difference on this.)
(initially it seems Amigas already outperform all PPC macintoshes in RAW disk performance) Last edited by KimmoK on 21-Apr-2012 at 11:58 AM. Last edited by KimmoK on 21-Apr-2012 at 11:56 AM.
