You mean from userland, right? Or were you thinking in terms of a completely synchronous driver model? (That's the direction Microsoft has been mulling over.)

On the current hardware, yes, I'm sure it would be. I'd take the hit for a more modern operating system. A good design should allow implementers to optimize how they see fit. Perceptual audio/video encoding is a good example. The most frequently used MPEG standards are quite old now, but because the encoding and decoding processes were decoupled as part of the design, we continue to see improvements in implementations. (Scary thought, though: a recent study showed that young adults prefer the sound of MP3 to state of the art lossless codecs. Yikes!)

As long as it doesn't end up a remake like the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds.

I'd actually like to see War of the Worlds done straight from the novel. Another film version of Day of the Triffids might be worth making.

Yes user land (programs/library), but maybe also drivers (devices) and kernel space, see spin locks in Linux.

That wasn't a half bad movie, I need to look for the torrent.
I don't really like CGI special effects though, not real enough yet & mostly over done.

Hyperion is making a movie! Just to get back OT!

Ah cheers for that.

I bought the BBC series from the 80s on DVD last year and it holds up fairly well. If this remake is as good as the BBC did with the Survivors then it should be good.

Errr... OS4.1, Hyperion, PPC processors, lawsuit (just to stay on topic).

Have you seen the original film from 1950:es ?

I did watch it first before seeing the Cruise one, just to be able to compare.

And, despite the effects being old, the version from 1950:es felt a lot more genuine.

Yes, the old classic one is the best. I loved that film as a kid and it's still great fun. Mind you, the War of the Worlds musical on CD by Jeff Wayne is fantastic.

The new War Of The Worlds has some of the best special effects to date. The Martian war machines really look and sound enormous. It helps to have a big screen and surround-sound. I need to get the Blue-ray version if there is one. It's one of my favorite movies if you don't count some of the slow parts.

As to Hyperion's most ambition project: SimCity 4 (I wish).

If it is games, I really vote for any of the Paradox titles.

@NutsAboutAmiga

There's inherently nothing wrong with spinlocks. They just need to be implemented and used in a way that allows all processes to make progress. They're particularly useful in multiprocessor systems, but on a single processor system, a mutex or some other kind of lock might make more sense--it depends on the scheduler.

Re: classic science fiction, the original The Day the Earth Stood Still is tops. The remake was pretty blah.

You don't want the chance to guess now, and find out that you were wrong later?

Just a guess:

Virtualization.

Virtualization is a possibility, as-is adding full memory-protection, and/or multi-processing capability. In all of the above virtualization would likely be needed for legacy apps.

Of course, they could be doing something totally different.

@Thread

Since sundown has been kind enough to open a thread to discuss old SF movies, let's move the discussion over there and refocus on Hyperion Entertainment here.

Thank you and kind regards, Yo

Would love to see a re-make of Forbidden Planet.

Why ?

The remakes are never as good.

They [film oproducers] seem to be doing a lot of that recently and the old versions are invariably much better IMHO.

To mess up Forbidden Planet would be sacriledge.

I've been trying to find that post where in this very forum one of the Hyperion guys (not Rogue) says they're not porting to i386, I think it was one of those Why not Amiga OS4.x for x86 threads, and as there's about 2 million of them I've given up looking.

But I have seen that Rogue has suggest x86
http://www.amigans.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=23172#forumpost23172

But dunno. A theory could be that with the release of the SAM Hyperion will hush up talk of any ports, to show support to Acube.

But maybe that's just a conspirtorial fantasy mad theory!

Thanks for that, no wonder I couldn't find it!

I wonder what he meant by "it's not a port to x86, that would not be "ambitious"."

Not ambitious enough, or just corporate suicide!?
