@Hyperionmp

I have come here for quite some years, and I never knew who was behind the username "Hyperionmp" ? Could you perhaps put me out of this confused state and tell me once and for all ?

Oh and also put the rest of this loving crowd out of their misery, by telling if it's amiga related, when hyperion talks about "embarking on their biggest project ever".

Thanks for coming here!

@ChrisH

It was said this would have to happen eventually. So it looks like OS4 will have to follow the path of MacOS when it went to OSX and OS9 programs had to boot an OS9 environment before running. Hopefully it won't get that bad and OS4 "classic" programs can be run instantly.

A few things come to mind that would be supported. Multi-core CPU support. SMP hardware has been off target for some years now but needs to be considered. This was one of the first modern ideas that the OS4 team were working on.

64-bit OS. OS4 is currently 32-bit and would need a big change to be 64-bit. Proper 64-bit. All pointers would need to be 64-bit in size. As well as certain data and function arguments. So there goes all the classic structures. This would need G5 hardware so I guess not big on the cards now as the current trend is still SOC G3-like CPUs.

Virtualised address space. Even though OS4 has virtualised memory it's still unlike other OS's where tasks have private address space areas. Also, AmigaOS despite being multi-tasking in operation still hasn't proper thread support. Even simple threading where a task could add code taking up the main task "timeslice" but running by itself does not exist.

Workbench reinvention. Spoken about for ages, Workbench is ready to be replaced. Needing commodities to activate or "hack on" features like asynchronous operation (and it's still not fully there yet) it's in a mess. Time for an overhaul.

The system itself. Being more POSIX compliant may make it easier to port apps like FireFox over. Plus it would be good if APIs like GTK could be a simple port to Intuition. Then there is system management like drivers and screen setup. And need for modern printer drivers. A big one is being able to locate and install software with ease, something currently obfuscated by locating 3rd part dependants and installing separately.

Well those are my top 5 combined ideas for AmigaOS4.

MP stands for managing partner rather than machine pistol. Ben Hermans used to be Hyperions managing partner, now it is Evert Carton.

I doubt it's Amiga-related, so it must be about AmigaOS 5.0.

That may be, but...Evert has his own nick on AW (as do the others).

And when 2 members of Discreetfx used the same nick during a period of a few days here on AW, advice was given in that case to sign posts, in order to avoid confusion regarding the poster.

The trouble is, that Evert has his own account.

I think its more likely that some parts of AmigaOS4.x is going to support 64bit addressing most likely by virtual memory, I think most parts of OS is going to remain 32bit to be compatible.

Remember the G5 contains 32bit and 64bit instructions, 64bit instructions will not work on 32bit computers, so your stuck whit 32bit if you like your programs to be compatible, whit virtual memory you can do 4GB per program in theory if the memory is private.

But you can in theory have more then 4GB (32bit) of physical memory (RAM) if the OS supported 64bit address space, and that my friend is a lot of physical memory for your Amiga server.

Wouldn't that need new G5 hardware?

New? All you need is a IBM workstation, PS3 or a old PowerPC G5 mac.

No.

Much like Evert has his own account and nick on AW, so does Timothy.

As in all these AmigaOnes/Micros/sams/PegIIs are now worthless for Amiga OS4.2?

I'm not speaking for Hyperion.

If you look at Windows programs to day, most programs are 32bit even if you have WindowsXP 64bit, only the virtual memory part of the OS needs to be different.

Optimizing for 64bit can be done in system libraries when needed for the target hardware.
(for example math.library for extra math precision)

If you have program that needs more then 4gb then the program has to be compiled for 64bit, any program that does not need more then 4gb can be 32bit and support the old hardware, there is virtually no speed benefit in compiling your program for 64bit (number of CPU cores and clock frequency has more impact on performance)

The day IBM drops 32bit instructions from there 64bit processors to make the CPU's cooler, that day we will need a emulator for old programs; this is how things progress, but don't worry even the CELL processor has 32bit instructions.

@Stephen_Robinson

The theoretically max memory a 32bit computer supports is 4GB Physical RAM,
The theoretically max memory a 64bit computer supports is 16.777.216 TB Physical RAM,

The max memory a sam440ep can address only 1GB physical memory, the rest is divided up in PCI address space, Nand Flash controller 256mb. Etc.

I did actually know that, but what I don't understand is the point your making, it's been an incradble struggle, for one reason or another to get hardware for AmigaOS, a nice OS but with gaps, one of which is not a high memory requirment. ie it runs on 512mb as well as it does on 2 gig, and I think you're saying it'll be a good idea to chuck out all the available hardware so it can use over 4 gig of ram?

Don't get me wrong I'd love to get a second hand quad core G5 Mac and run OS4.2(4.5??) on it using 8 gig of memory or whatever, but I'd rather be able to run OS4.1 on my single core 512mb mac Mini, well, NOW to be honest.

I'm pretty sure it's AmigaOS4.3 and they added support of 64bit MultiCore CPUs based on AMD designs.

Doomy is working on the new kernal as we speak. MilSpec memory protection too.

@All

I have heard Hyperion is working on AOS4.5 with 64Bit support. They will use the AROS 64bit source code to speed up development, Hyperion is shure to bring us AOS4.5 in less than 2 years.

AOS4.5 will need a dual core ( or better ) x86-64 system with Hyperion licenced boot ROMs. One of the CPU cores is used to run a PPC emulator for AOS4.1 compatible applications.

The special Friedens patented MCHAL ( Multi Core Hardware Abstraction Layer ) enables a sophisticated system architecture called AMP ( Asymetrical Mulit Processing ). In AMP the main system is runing on one CPU core to provide maximum reaction times, so called slave processes ( for 3D rendering, 68 or PPC emulating ) are distributed to free CPU cores but are encapsulated by the MCHAL to protect system resources agains illegal access from the slave processes.
This system will act like a memory protection but will be turned of in the first version of AOS4.5 to avoid system incompatibiliy to ols AOS1.3 system APIs
Because of driver problems Hyperion will work together with selected hardware producers like ACube.

Just makeing fun about fanstatic mostly worthless speculations

Naaah, Hyperion have abandoned OS4.x, and are now working with Amiga Inc on OS5, which is twice as good as OS X don't you know?

No, no..

It is not 4.3, 4.5 or even 5.0..
It is OS 7 and they are finishing it in cooperation with Microsoft... ;)

Yes I think so..
I think OS4 will be more interesting, if it supported more hardware for more potential users.

Not at all, 64bit cpu's are just over kill for AmigaOS,
64bit CPU is commonly used in servers, because of hi memory requirements, often servers are configured whit lots of disk cache, and SQL servers also require lots of RAM.

We only need 512mb to play Quake3.
I think DOOM3 requires 1GB of memory.

Possibly VideoEditing can needs lot of RAM,

When you support, a 64Bit CPU you get support for more then 4GB, almost for free.
