@someone

It would be nice to see more performance results of SAM.

AOS4 68kJIT speed on SAM vs 68k060/50 & vs G3 800Mhz
MAME usability test on SAM vs 68k060/50 & vs G3 800Mhz
GLQuake 640x480 FPS results. (native PPC binary & 3D acceleration) SAM vs 68k060/50 & vs G3 800Mhz
EUAE speed on SAM vs 68k060/50native & vs G3 800Mhz

@AP

I look forward to reading the article. Have you managed to benchmark the 800mhz Flex? I could run a few comparative benchmarks myself but seeing as you've done it already I'll just buy the next issue of Amiga Future instead

@Ruud:>Have you managed to benchmark the 800mhz Flex?

I did the benchmark for the flex on a SAMflex with 667Mhz. But to see how the 800Mhz-version would perform I did a "virtual" benchmark for it (based on the results for the 667Mhz-flex).

You're welcome. Let's hope I wasn't talking out of my ass. (Let's also hope that expression translates correctly.)

@all

I did some quick speed tests on my micro with the L2 cache on & off.

1. ZoneXplorer (68K, JIT), full screen render was 1.3% faster with L2 on.
2 dnetc, 0.4% faster with L2 on.
3. xmame "Outrun" fps, 23.5% faster with L2 on.
4. xmame "Marvel Vs Capcom: clash of the super heroes", 59.6 fps with L2 on, 41.7 fps with L2 off.

Seems games take advantage of the L2 cache the most.

For those that like to test, in a shell, "cpu noexternalcache" = L2 cache off, "cpu externalcache" = L2 cache on.

Edit:added test #4 for jahc

@drHirudo

Here's a quick comparison:

SamFlex has a faster memory bus

Actually they have the same speed memory bus as I understand it:

A1 133Mhs SDRAM @64bits

SAM440 266Mhz DDR @32Bits(100 pin dimms are only 32 bits wide)

Quote:
SamFlex has the option to use a faster graphic card than the one integrated in the MicroA1
SamFlex use sata by default and MicroA1 only with an addon card
SamFlex has USB 2 in contrast with 1.1 on the MicroA1

Can't argue with these though. If the worst happens and my SE dies, I would have very little concern about ordering an 800Mhz flex as a replacement. I intend to wait for a 460 1G+ machine, however

Cool, that will be interesting
I don't need a Flex but I'm tempted for some mad reason.

I just want let you know, that I wrote an article for the next issue of "Amiga Future" and compared ALL AmigaOS4.1 systems with benchmarks (including SAMflex).

interesting test, but you should test programs that are big and run slow.

for example OWB, gimp, play DVD, encode mp3.can you please test it hear.for example a unsharp mask in gimnp of a 5 Megapixel image, OWB peacekeeper benchmark or so.

i think also if the mem clock is not increase, the SAM get not much faster with 800 MHZ.

so 667 MHZ and calculate speed to 800 MHZ is not good.

see embcc benches, 440ep CPU are slow in compare to g3 g4 or MPCxxx
