@NutsAboutAmiga

Actually one can refer to the console.device/CMD_WRITE Autodoc to know every supported control sequence (online version here) . And beware it was never documented ANSI color were to be respected in fact it always depended upon the screen's palette...

Yesterday I had "hobby evening" 2hours looking after SAM's USB mouse and 2hours hobbying.

*** ***
Switched to debug kernel -> rock solid system
Started to use USB hub for mouse+keyboard -> no USB lockup (Bosari's tips)
Disabled compositing -> responsiveness improved, I can run 4 IBrowse windows without running out of video RAM, everything is now faster, only window movement cause some window flashing, also ADF reader became usable (memory hog, but usable)
Changed to square window edges -> eye candy
changed display to 16bit, to maximize multitasking capability -> small effect
Updated OWB -> works ok, faster than IBrowse? (picture uploading to Facebook did not work, otherwise ok)

Todo:
- improve booting, I want SAM to boot in less than 20 seconds
- try to make the keymap perfect (@ -mark etc. are hard to reach)
-set keyboard so that ctrl + (left) windows button + windowsmenubutton causes soft reboot
- find ways to customize AOS4 to be lighter/easier on resources. It is not nice that AOS4 on 64M VRAM + 512M Fast RAM runs out of RAM faster than A4k 2MChip+128MFast.
- start to use assigns in a more advanced ways (Bosari's tips)
- make DVD playing to work
- freespace demo still does not work
-for some reason my SAM does not cold boot unless I keep it OFF for more than 10 seconds (too low power components? LG TFT is connected to the power out of SAM Power and it takes tens of seconds before the LED of the TFT display go dark, so perhaps some motherboard functions also keep on running even if the power is off....)
- LEARN AOS again (I'm partially braindamaged by Linux and windows)
- set up filer and other file managers
- set up euae
- do the helloworld app with the SDK
etc...

... stay away from installing MOS to MacMini a little bit longer ....

@cha05e90

Killer app.

(When I'm humble when entering Amiga developer world, it is more possible that I give myself positive feelings later.)

UPDATE:
Updated OWB again -> works better
Played with compositing on/off -> not totally unusable feature on SAM
Installed stuff like AmigaAMP (strange lagging with the window), dvplayer DVD plugin (no sound, frameskip), mplayer (DVD frameskip etc.), Dopus 4.xx, warpSnes (system crash)….
Coded & compiled & tested helloworld -app´-> very fun!
Setup SW launcers/docks.
Went through whole AOS4.1beta content (MOS and icAROS have a lot more preinstalled stuff, IMHO)
Staid away from the MOS&MacMini. Now I'm ready to test it & replace OSX (forever?).

Had about 2 crashes and 2 USB lockups during 8 hours.

Todo:
- try to make the keymap perfect (@ -mark etc. are hard to reach)
-set keyboard so that ctrl + (left) windows button + windowsmenubutton causes soft reboot (someone could post a link to HOWTO)
- improve booting, I want SAM to boot in less than 20 seconds
- enable DVD drive DMA (someone could post a link to HOWTO, again) hoping to improve DVD playback
- find ways to customize AOS4 to be lighter/easier on resources. It is not nice that AOS4 on 64M VRAM + 512M Fast RAM runs out of RAM faster than A4k 2MChip+128MFast.

@all

I might have time today to try to fix/do these:
-set keyboard so that ctrl + (left) windows button + windowsmenubutton causes soft reboot (someone could post a link to HOWTO)
- enable DVD drive DMA (someone could post a link to HOWTO, again) hoping to improve DVD playback

To check whether you are using DMA yet, either of these Shell commands will do:
IDETool -l sii3114ide.device
NVGetVar sii3114ide_xfer

To actually enable DMA for everything, use this command:
NVSetVar sii3114ide_xfer GGGG ;0000

Or if you just want to (temporarily?) enable DMA on one drive, use one of these commands:
IDETool -x sii3114ide.device 0 70 ;12
IDETool -x sii3114ide.device 3 70 ;12

Note that the value afte the ";" will be ignored, but it is the value you would use to disable DMA. However it is best to make a note of what value it was originally, using one of the two commands at the start of this post.

Switch to 16-bit screen modes, except for apps that need 32-bits (say paint programs). Disabling compositing, except on Workbench. Hopefully a future OS4 update will improve things here (enough people have complained!).

I doubt you will get Sam440 to boot in 20 seconds, but you can speed it up by:
* Put Run <>Nil: before AddNetInterface in Startup-Sequence.
* Reducing Uboot menu times from 3 seconds down to 0 for the first menu (requires changing Uboot env variable), and 1 for the second menu (can be done from Uboot menu).
* Disabling unneeded Kickstart modules (hint: Don't disable Petunia, or OS4 won't boot!). The boot image is not needed, and so will save a bit of time.
* Make OS4's boot partition use SFS/0 (beware that changing the filingsystem will wipe it), and then optimising/defragging it. Of course backup before doing any of this.

Today's hobby time slice used.

Enabled DMA for DVD.
Now it seems that DvPlayer plays DVD very well (I just need to installa audio codecs) but mplayer works very slowly... etc

another day another try

Update:
Now softboot happens in 10 seconds, ok, good enough.
Cold boot ... setting those timers ...

"reboot fast" in shell + [enter] -> wb in 13 seconds
(also, it seems that it is one second faster without debug (12s))

I can wait that.

Power on -> wb in 37 seconds ... could be faster (includes 2x 1 second menu delay)
(9 seconds before anything happens on screen
9 seconds later kickstart starts loading
kickstart is loaded in 7 seconds
wb is accessible 11,5 seconds later)

Since the AOS4.1 fix I have not been able to do ctrl+alt+alt reset or reset button reset. Only power off ... 10 seconds ... power on works.
Usually SAM locks up with black screen, it does not seem to start uboot.

Any idea what to do to improve that?
(Update: in my HW configuration I've jumpered the motherboard to "power on" always when PSU gets the 240V input, perhaps it causes something, I'll have to try the ATX way of power handling someday)

Then there's the problem to teach AOS4 that my keyboard has only one windows button.
So, soft reset should be set to ctrl+Lwin+Rmenu buttons. ... and I lost the instruction ....

btw. I just found: system/help
It's very useful!

Update:
Checked Acube for ne manual. SAMep manual 1.1 says that DVI supports up to 1600x1200 resolution, but to me it seems that fullHD is also perfect via DVI.

Update:
nvsetvar kbddev_norwin 1
... perhaps I now have the right Amigabutton ....

updates...
-now I can do soft reboots from keyboard.
-I still loose USB keyb+mouse every now and then.
-uboot update improved cold boot 4 seconds.

? is there a CD / DVD burner hidden somewhere in the SAM's OS4.1?
? DATA CD & DVD reading seems still slow ...

But this is fun!
(I've had some had terrible days @ work with windows)

OS4 apparently allows treating CD/DVD-RWs like floppy disks, using a special filing system. I think you just format it right (perhaps using Media Toolbox), but have not tried.

I use either AmiDVD (simple but free) or FryingPan (needs registering but does more stuff).

I would be interested in checking AOS4.1 known bugs list when I notice something weird in AOS4.

How could I get access to such information?

(I'm a (embedded) SW specialist @ work/by profession, so I might be able to also help in AOS4 development.)

Hopefully Update 1 will mean that there AREN'T any "known bugs" or more likely it will be a very small list!

I think there is no "ultimate" SAM hints&tricks site/document yet?

Anyway. For me the SAM440ep is working better and better.

Current annoyances (update4) are:
- Sometimes USB mouse and keyboard "drop off", it gets fixed by removing+reconnecting
- PDF reading is slow (opening P1022 reference manual takes about 140 seconds (135seconds for generating bookmarks) and it's slow when scrolling pages)
- MUI OWB is not yet assynchronous
- my UAE settings are not yet perfect ... it would be worth a new thread...

I seem to get one crash a day, depending what I do.

AFAIK RunInUAE is part of the Update 4 contribution.

@KimmoK

The Ultimate SAM440/460 Hints & Tricks site sounds good. The Hyperion forums cover the OS4.x issues with SAM, but not hardware issues. One can e-mail Acube for answers, but to my knowledge, there is no official hardware site covering technical difficulties. Perhaps someone could come up with an article for AW.net's OS4 Zone? Perhaps it would be best if someone official from ACube could write the article along with current solutions and planned UBoot/firmware updates to address problems?
