@BigD

That was me! :D

I saw this news and couldn't resist! I can't wait to try it all out :D

I've always fancied a MacOS machine and the ability to run MorphOS and Linux etc on it too should be lots of fun.

I hope this machine turns out to be alright

(so far I have one, 1,42Ghz one, it cost 220¤, IIRC)

(btw. not managed to boot into MOS so far, not able to control the Apple boot menu...)

How many PPC Mac Mini's are sold... rough guess: 400.000+ units.

This means every Amiga enthusiast that exists at the moment can have a MorphOS solution

Unfortunately there is a big gap in your logic, or I would have been more keen on seeing OS4 ported to it:

Most computers are thrown in the bin (or stored in the roof) when they are unwanted. Same goes for Macs I suspect. How many make it on to ebay? Who knows, but the place isn't exactly brimming with Mac Minis by all accounts...

@KimmoK

I have three 1.25ghz models which I'll be selling (at a price just to cover my costs) next week with MorphOS & OS X dual boot ready installed. In hind sight I ought to have bought some 1.5ghz 64mb vram models as well. I thought I had a bit more time before the release. The price for those is going to shoot up now!

@d0pefish

Good spot. Hard month financially for me - car trouble, so couldn't justify the expense. I probably have had to sell a classic 'miggy to cover it and that's not something I really want to do! Good for you though as I would have bid it up to at least £250! However, Uncharted 2 for the PS3 has just come out to great reviews so the Slim is looking tempting for Christmas

@sananaman

I don't think you have understood my point.
I was replying to earlier statements saying that the mac mini would damage the long term prospects of new hardware for MorphOS.

I don't think it would.
Mac mini is only a short to medium term temporary solution, a good one in my opinion
This should raise the userbase and funding for MOS.

Long term, new hardware will need to be found.
The mini gives breathing space for that to happen.

i guess you numbers are a bit wrong. A1 µA1 and Sam together have reachd a number way below 5000 and Mac G4 Minis were produced in even higher numbers.

Yup, I have. It didn't boot on my PowerMac G4 dual 400Mhz, 1GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 8500 with 64MB RAM. It hangs at the Quark/OpenFirmware message.

In case you want to try, this is how to do it - holding down the 'c' key during boot didn't load the MorphOS cd, so you need to dive into OpenFirmware.

First, you need to boot into OpenFirmware on your Mac. This is done by holding down cmd+opt+o+f during boot up. Then, at the OpenFirmware prompt, make sure that the MorphOS cd is recognised:

ok> dir cd:\

This should list the contents of the CD in the drive. 'cd' Is automatically set up as a device alias in OF on Macs, but in the unlikely case yours might use a different alias, you can issue this command to check:

ok> devalias

This will list all current aliases. Here you can see which alias is used by your CD/DVD drive.

Once you're sure the device alias is correct, you can issue the boot command to try and load the MorphOS kernel:

ok> boot cd:\mac_ppc32\boot.img

The 'boot' command speaks for itself, I'd say. The Mini boot.img file is located in the mac_ppc32 directory, whereas the Pegasos 1, Efika, and regular images are located at the root of the disk.

You will most likely not get beyond the Quark/OpenFirmware message, but for all we know, we might strike gold somewhere and find a machine (other than the Mini) which supports MorphOS.

Happy testing!

But then there's only a few amigans that would actually buy 'Amiga' hardware*, so I think it still holds...

Adam was the one who helped in the design on AmigaOneXE and uA1. He did the first RTL8029 driver for OS4 (that worked great), he added Mediator4000 support to Linux and other stuff you probably don't know but writting FUD is something you do very well.

@Crumb

Most people don't know him or what he did contribute to the amiga, but rather for the latest announcements about hardware that never materialized, so it's not strange that people feels this way about him.

I'm not saying he's bad guy or something, rather the opposite, but that i understand people's feelings about him not being a reliable source of information.

@all

If you want to discuss ACK further please take it to a
proper thread or make a new one.

@ChrisH

You made a recent public call to discuss what you think has been loose moderation lately. But you are participating yourself in bringing things off-topic. I don't want to get into that further here or perhaps at all. But please take that as food for thought.

Although I've not used macs, I have noticed that they retain a significant portion of their value, when compared to similar age PCs. I'd be surprised if a large proportion of macs end up in the roof/bin (at least of their first owner). The mac people I know sell their previous systems to pay towards the cost of the next one as soon as it comes out anyway.

Personally, the only computers I have in storage are Amigas and a couple of broken x86 laptops. If/when I upgrade my PC I give it to the person I know who needs it the most. Did that recently - I don't even own a desktop x86 anymore (although my laptop still runs XP).

When I've looked on Ebay over the last few months there have always been several Mac mini G4s in the UK alone at any one time. Seriously, I doubt that a lack of available G4 mac-minis will be the limiting factor in sales of MorphOS (although I'd be very happy if MOS sold so many copies - perhaps they could bring down the price ).

EDIT: Punctuation and grammar
