Yes - but it was misguided and pointless.

No.

The Amiga from 1994 to now is a period best forgotten as very little happened. Jeff Schneider (remember him long-time Amiga fans?) was more right than he ever knew when he said 'the Amiga will be in the valley of death for some time'. That was over 10 years ago.

Whatever he did or didn't do:

He did get the existing machines back into production and started development on new machines - e.g. the Walker and then PPC (a CPU choice that made a lot of sense back then).

He also actually did some marketing, something Commodore were always famous for an almost complete lack of.

IIRC (correct me if I'm wrong) it was tech that Petro got Phase5 started on, that later lead to the intro of the PPC cards. That technology later lead to MorphOS, and if you didn't have MorphOS you also wouldn't have OS 4.

So, you can indirectly thank him for quite a lot.

Yeah.... let me introduce Power Amiga plan with all details revealed:

Quote:

He then, with much suspense, announced the next generation Amigas will use Motorola's PowerPC CPU and will be dubbed the Power Amiga.

More details follow:

Quote:

And here are some more interesting bits:

Quote:

And lets not forget this:
Quote:

Some details about new AmigaOS were also revealed:

Quote:

I also wanted to add that during his speech, Petro also mentioned that the PowerAmiga will feature memory protection and virtual memory as OS features. I cannot stress enough that his speech was very upbeat and optimistic, and there many breaks for loud applause as he made certain points.

Here are other planned features:
Quote:

And OS developers were:
Quote:

Dave Haynie

And it was moving fast (to crash):
Quote:

Ladies and Gentlemen, all in all the Power Amiga project will be involving more than a dozen companies. We are confident and think that such a synergy will make things happen very fast. Our team is ready to go.

The thing is, Petro was never really in charge. Only thing he could do is pump enthusiams into Amiga users and hope for a miracle. I cant blame Petro for being without powers but AT was nothing but a muppet show.

(I admit I made up that Dave Haynie part.)

Care to explain why you think so?
From what I know he indeed was "the man who kept Amiga International in operation long enough to get a buyer".
And he was the one who disentangled the tangled patent situation and put together a complete package to be able at all to sell it.

"Like Tramiel, Tyschtschenko is an ambitious and impatient visionary. By the end of 1995, his fledgling division had produced and sold 20,000 Amiga 1200s in Europe. While Amiga will initially focus on the Continent, Tyschtschenko plans to aggressively enter the North American market in 1996. "

FAIL.

What exactly do you mean with "FAIL" here?
That he was no visinary or that he didn'tr succeed in entering the North American market in 1996?

Gathering a core of former Commodore engineers, Tyschtschenko is overseeing the development of an improved operating system and new hardware utilizing the Power PC 604. Dubbed the Power Amiga project, the company is creating hardware and software in conjunction with IBM, Motorola, Apple and over a dozen other companies. "

FAIL.

Are you serious?
I still use my A4k with CSPPC as my main System today...
Without his move to get the Amiga system on PPC hardware there would possibly be no PPC Amiga OS and no MorphOS...

EPIC FAIL.

Do you really believe it was his fault that Escom and later Gateway changed the direction of Amiga development he provided and dropped the PPC, AFTER the Amiga technology was sold?

I'd say more damage has been done to the Amiga by subsequent Amiga "leaders"...

Don't be too hard on Bill and Fleecy. I agree that they didn't do much , but at least we now have os4.

All they did was trying to hinder OS4 development, aside from frauding customers (coupon).
I can very well remember that Bill and Fleecy entered the stage and proclaimed the end of the Amiga operating system as desktop operating system and that AInc would be concentrating on mobile devices (DE, AA).

Surprise, surprise - even my dog did something during that period of time...

On the other hand, thing would have been really different if Pedro were in charge. I do belive that he really had the amiga at heart unlike Bill and Fleecy. I would think that under the financial circonstances that Pedro was, he did acheived a lot. I wish he would have all the ressources that Bill and Fleecy had.

On this I can agree with you.

He filled people with false hope and mouse mats,

Sorry mate - but the hopes he filled me with were not false.

He envisioned the Amiga moving to the PPC and I was hoping for those plans to succeed - and guess what?
I'm still using my A4k with CyberstormPPC (bought in November 1997 at the Amiga fair here in Cologne) as my main system!
He also deserves credit for kicking of the development of OS 3.5. and
OS 3.9/WarpOS, ...

...while I never heard up to now that you were trying to "build something" back then.
What "broken promises" are you talking about?
