For a laugh, I had a go at Amiga-ing up my MorphOS desktop.

| @Gleng that is a little too 4.0 pre release for my tastes...
mine looks like this (real OS4 of course):

Believing being the keyword here. And wet dreams about SMP and memory protection don't qualify at all. Stick to the facts. :)
I guess you'll serve me swap memory and this SLAB allocator (for the 999th time :)), but it was already answered before that the former is not interesting in machines that come with 2GB memory, and the second is worthless if it doesn't come with a performant base memory allocator in the first place.
On the other hand, i still see no way to even get the cpu time spent in a task in OS4 kernel. It's nice to be able to display cpu usage per task, for instance (that's just a random example).Last edited by Fab on 26-Jul-2010 at 06:49 PM.

| @Fab well according to you, anything you don't have in MOS is useless
Anyway, my bottom line in previous post stands

Not, that's not entirely true. There are good things in OS4 too. I don't think the notification system is useless. I don't have anything against things like subpanels or transparency in panels, ... |

I'll grant you the notification system which can be a cool concept (if used :)). |
It's already used in many OS4 software, for example YAM use it for notify new incoming e-mails, TuneNet use it automatically when it switch radio stations or songs, SabreMSN use it for incoming messages from friends and so on, it's very nice thing and since introduced I can't live without it
AmiDock in another good feature of OS4, it permit users to use animated docky too, thanks to the application.library programmers can doing a lot of things such controlling the windows of the workbench screen, having slideshowed pics on dock using Photoframe.docky and a lot of other things
Concerning DOS if you are interested ask Shinkuro for details, he always told that OS4 DOS are far better than the one availible on MorphOS, sadly we have an incomplete shell (but it is availible and in betatesting)Last edited by samo79 on 26-Jul-2010 at 07:18 PM.

Sure, you can do interesting things with that (and very easily, though it shouldn't be abused either). Just for the fun, and since 3.x times, I actually use custom notifications myself for some apps too, with REXX. For instance, new mails are notified in my amirc client, private irc messages are displayed in MPlayer (ok, totally geeky :)).
This docky concept is ok, and we actually had it implemented in ambient in 2005 or so, with chaozer's tray.library. But the author disappeared, since and we didn't enable the thing in public builds. That said, since MorphOS 2.x we have similar features with screenbar modules too (network/memory/cpu status, audio volume control, ...).
Regarding DOS, i'm more than suspicious, though. :) |

Gfx in SDL applications is often CPU bound. Sometimes it is just the OS lacking HW acceleration for gfx. Prior MorphOS 2.0 it was not possible have HW accelerated alpha blits for example. Sometimes it is just design issue... SDL doesnt support LE 16bit (hicolor) screen modes on BE machines. Since most gfx cards only support LE hicolor modes gmaes using 16bit screenmode run unnecessarily slow as pixel format conversion is needed.
There are small bits here and there. _________________ Amiga Developer Amiga 500, Efika, Mac Mini and PowerBook |

| @Gleng What is up with the rendering issues in OWB though? Never had anything like that on the OS4.x version. |

Oh right! It seems to happen when I shrink the window and the word "members" drops down a line. Didn't notice when I took the screenshot. _________________

Nice, maybe if is it possible to packed as software, release it for pubblic, as OS3 user I can find it interesting too

I see it at latest Pianeta Amiga but I didn't understand too mutch how its works, for this type of things you need to use a bit at home, this is the reason why recently I buy an eMac G4
@Tomas
Yes maybe, I don't use Wet recently Last edited by samo79 on 26-Jul-2010 at 08:46 PM. Last edited by samo79 on 26-Jul-2010 at 08:45 PM.

Tested it on 3.29 on OS4.1 and it seems to happen there as well if i shrink the window enough. Edit: Same in Firefox on linux. Last edited by Tomas on 26-Jul-2010 at 09:02 PM.

| MorphOS looks great and as an OS4 user I have to admit MorphOS looks like is ahead of the game on the face of it. Shame they are only targeting old Mac PPC hardware at present, a nice niche at present but where's the future?
Would love to try MorphOS on my Sam440, not found a £8.50 eMac yet . |

| @Itix: if it's CPU bound, why does having native version makes such a difference ? I guess Fab wouldn't waste its time working on a native version if the difference wasn't that high, right ? _________________ http://www.warpdesign.fr/ |
