I own MorphOS also and they have pumped out to updates with equally as many updates for OWB I feel like AmigaOS 4.x is getting left behind |
My impression (I didn't look closely) was that most of these MOS updates are mainly bug fixes, and are frequently to do with bugs on all the PPC Mac hardware they started supporting. EDIT: Having checked this years release history, I basically stand by my statement.
IMHO, since Update 2, OS4.1 didn't have much need for bug fixes, hence no need for lots of (bug fixing) updates...

In theory yes, you can. But it would probably breake licence agreement. However, if you will use it only on one computer, I don´t think anyone would complain. |

Comparing MorphOS, AROS and AmigaOS is always unfair to some extend. In the case of AmigaOS you have to take into account that they have two new boards (SAM460 and Nemo) to develop for.
|
I don't see why it would be unfair...
When was the last update released ?
As for the "IMHO, since Update 2, OS4.1 didn't have much need for bug fixes, hence no need to spam updates...", it seems an update was released a few days ago by ACube which fixes some slow transfer rate. It is supposed to be part of the next update.Last edited by Leo on 05-Dec-2010 at 01:00 PM.

Thank you for the information! I would only use it on one computer. My main concern is with having to buy OS4.1 twice if I decide to upgrade my hardware, but it seems like I won't have to. |

Informations I wrote apply only to 4.1 Update1 and 2. Hyperion certainly can´t be held responsible, if future update requires registred version for specific machine: eg. you buy 4.1 for SAM, register it, download Update 1, delete OS4.1 on your SAM and Install Update 1 on Pegasos 2 - it will work. Then, when Update 3 is released it can have (but not must have!) more forks (like original 4.1 distribution) and you will be able to download only version for machine you originally registered.
Current licence policy of Hyperion (I think) is one licence per platform: you can buy OS4.1 eg. for uA1. Then you buy AmigaOne XE and you can delete OS on your uA1 and install it on XE. Not on SAM or Pegasos 2. |

It will be interesting to see what's included in the next update. Having not been running OS4.x for some time now, I've not been following the evolution of the OS with each update. Is there a summary somewhere of significant changes per update?
I do still have ambitions to have OS4.x one day (I own OS4.0 for classic, but have no PPC classic machine anymore ), but will have to wait until my finances are significantly better than they currently are.
Shame really, as I had intended to be on the beta-tester program. But such is life - Hyperion/A-Eon's timetable and needs have to come secondary to the realities of my bank account. _________________ Troll - n., A disenfranchised former potential customer who remains interested enough to stay informed and express critical opinions. opp., the vast majority who voted silently with their feet. |

What you are suggesting is factually & completely incorrect.
The OS4.1 distribution CDs have always been platform specific - for A1's, SAM's, Peg2s and Classics.
If you wipe your SAM system and try to install the A1 OS4.1u1 CD there, keep your old SAM OS CD handy... You'll need it!
I expect the A1 CD wont even boot in a SAM.
Thanks,
PJS

Similarly, CruxPPC Linux distribution supports SAM (or some of them?), but for A1 you need the A1 kernel project one, which isn't in any distro I think. _________________ : AmigaOneXE (unmod.) 750FX/512 MB +stuff & AmigaOS 4.(0|1) : A1200/68060&96MB/SCSI/EM1200-Voodoo3 & OS 3.5 : A500/1MB : Pegasos (ff) 512 MB & MorphOS Praise seitan. |

Ummm, and what are you trying to prove? (Hint: One OS4 performance issue/bug on Sam440 vs (I assume) tons of MOS performance issues/bugs on various PPC Macs does NOT prove that OS4 should have had as many updates as MOS.)

| Personally I think the reason that updates are going slow is because they are focusing on getting a fully working bug free version to be shipped with the X1000.

Then better look closely and read the release notes of MorphOS 2.x. The OS is getting more support, new features and gets more polished release after release. And regarding OWB - that one is progressing so fast, it is just amazing. _________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001) |

I think you have some keyboard filter that replaces any occurence of "mac" with "old mac" in your posts. Luckily for you, it doesn't replace "SAM" with "Underpowered expensive SAM" or "Amigaone" with "Old crappy expensive Teron" yet. :) |

| Personally, i don't consider 40 bugfixes and two new keyboard layouts a new OS release.
That's just my opinion by reading the MorphOS 2.7 releasenotes.
Sorry for the offtopic.

First there were also a couple new features. But, ok, let's assume it doesn't qualify as an OS update, then I suppose you also consider OS4.1 update 2 was nothing either?
After all, 37MB out of 40MB in OS4.1 update 2 was about python and recompiled shared objects. The rest was a couple bugfixes and a buggy cairo hw-accelerated version. |

Small update or not, it is completely new ISO image. So it is new revision to 2.x line. _________________ Amiga Developer Amiga 500, Efika, Mac Mini and PowerBook |

As you said, it was just an update of Version 4.1, not a version bump on itself.
And as they say on hyperion website:
"This is a minor update which contains mostly bugfixes.
Updated components include
Updated Python New Cairo 1.8.10 with partial hardware acceleration Updated Ringhio notification system New version of AmiDock Several fixed system libraries New version of the Python-scriptable Installation Utility A couple of updated Shared Object files compiled and linked with the new V2 SObjs ABI".
To repeat myself, a few updates doesn't justify a version bump.
EDIT: quoting update 1 contents, it didn't bump the version number either.
"Kernel Offers more stability on SAM, a more reliable and efficient memory management system and improved memory paging to and from harddisk. DOS A new mechanism for launching preset programs for specific taks, such as email clients and web-browsers (URLopen). Application tracking for ease of program location (AppDir: handler). Improved shared object support with significantly decreased loading times. Intuition Improved window support, fading and rendering - including drop shadows. Reduced video memory consumption due to improved screen handling. New internal methods for better system "theme" support. System Updated ASL requesters and imagery for a fresh new look. New notification system. Enhanced automatic detection of installed hardware (including DDC support). Improved support for external USB devices. Updated sound.datatype and wav.datatype. New screenblankers. Improved calculator with extended mode. Workbench The new Startup preferences means no more copying files to WBStartup. A brand new icon set to complement higher screen resolutions. New window themes offering enhanced visual feedback. Scalable icons. Workbench auto update feature. Python Tested with the regression suite. Enhanced distutils module for easy installation of Python packages. New Amiga modules including catalog and icon. New OS module methods. MiniGL V2.2" Last edited by Ami603 on 05-Dec-2010 at 07:35 PM.
