as far as im aware pcs do not need null modem but plain cable for serial debug, but maybe im wrong. i guess a1 will need the same type of cable as pc.

I think you are wrong about PC not needing null modems, but even if they have some internal switching for PC to PC use that I don;t know about, you *do* need a null modem for A1 to PC connections

It seems that many older NG Amigas are starting to giving trouble. It may be wise to acquire and test serial debug cables BEFORE problems start so that you know were you are if and when these sort of problems occur.

Yes, then you already would know that the connection and used terminal program are correcly setup and working. Now I' dont know if the connection is ok, or the terminal program is configured correctly.... sigh....
I tried COM1 and 2 ports, all baudrates, nothing......
Also, I got a mail from france (Revanche llc), they dont do repairs anymore....
On the other hand I got a very eager email from Alinea to help me out with a SAM460
I still find it rather unbelievable for my A1 to fail in such a sudden and catastrophical way. Or where there warning signs ? Remember those crashes I was experiencing ? Last edited by Metalheart on 11-Feb-2012 at 02:34 PM. Last edited by Metalheart on 11-Feb-2012 at 02:32 PM.

Another tip if you have a PS/2 Keyboard look to see if the led's blink at power on.

I will ! What does that tell me if the do or dont ?
The moment I switched on my A1 they blinked once, all 3 together
The reset button didnt do anything, the on/off button does the same as the on/off switch. Last edited by Metalheart on 11-Feb-2012 at 02:39 PM.

i stand corrected. it just wanted to place it under consideration, what ive been told while choosing my own serial debug setup. likely those pc shops dont even exactly know how serial works. so the null modem is the way to go.
@metalheart
doesnt sound very encouraging. i think you would get some output on any boudrate/port, be it rubbish, if the machine was actually starting up. |

This should indicate that your motherboard is powering up. After this should be the ram test I think. If it fails here then you can only detect with the serial output. On a Sam I get 3 sets of blinks before video output with a PS2/USB keyboard adaptor and PS/2 Keyboard.

Any sugestions about what to check ? |
The first thing I found wrong with my CPU module was this; http://www.flickr.com/photos/45651411@N08/5939664759/
The surprising thing is, that even after I'd soldered this resistor back into place, there was no change in the symptoms! But I was soon able to get my XE booting by applying pressure onto the CPU, it was very inconsistent though. See further below.
Still this shows what can happen, and it may be worth a very close examination of both boards for just this kind of damaged/dislodged component.
As others have suggested it's difficult to know for certain whether you're getting any output from the XE's serial when you can't verify that the connection is working, idealy with another computer.
I see that you've gone ahead and purchased a SAM 460 EX , so maybe it's time to get a bit more aggresive with the XE?
You could try applying and holding steady pressure to the centre of the CPU (and other components) as you boot.
What I did, was to clamp the heatsink down onto the CPU without springs and used bolts only. This clamped the CPU hard onto the PCB and re-established the contacts. My XE booted consistently and therefore I knew I'd found the problem - broken contacts between the CPU and its PCB! So, obviously I knew then that the CPU itself was working. I contacted Retronix aprox two years ago and they removed the CPU, re-balled it and replaced it. My XE is still working reliably to this day!
My XE's heatsink http://www.flickr.com/photos/45651411@N08/5939731779/
The springs were removed and the bolts turned upside-down - the nuts on the top so that I could tighten it down and have the room to replace the CPU into the mainboard.

Yes thanks, I was considering leaving OS4 and continue computing using Windows as there is nothing i need to do on my Amiga that i cant do on my PC, except reading my OS4 HD's. And ofcourse the money issue... But hell, I'll just wont eat anymore during the next few months
Now the presure of getting my A1 fixed is off, i can take my time for that. And have no more stress about it.
btw, I dont mind using Windows in adition to OS4, but I hated being forced to do everything with it....
So there you go, I'm settled for the next 8 years....

| Hi @raumfahre
I know EXACTLY how you feel. I was without my XE for aprox 4 months, and didn't much like being without it! Seven months now for me. Thanks for sharing of message #92. That's very good and interesting experience. My problem isn't so much a dead A1; it goes through everything normaly and stops with a blinking cursor on the load KS screen ; it lost it's Mojo or the dongle that makes it go!! My A1-XE Kickstart hang-up! How does the OS bootup after loading in KS modules is the mystery switch I would like to know where it's at....

Have you thought about how you will move your data from the AmigaOne XE hard drive to the Sam 460 ? Last edited by Spectre660 on 12-Feb-2012 at 12:27 PM.

Perhaps by using HDD cases that connect to USB? _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

| Isn't it just possible to stick the HD to the new machine? Pata,Sata difference or maybe use the sil-card? Been without my XE still apparently not working at the shop. Waiting for a reasonable OS4 machine as surfing gets worse on this pc every time when booting. Now Youtube freezes Firefox but there should be a net proggy for the new Amiga too if and when buying.

Indeed they are a few ways to do this. One intersting one would be a disk to disk rawcopy from IDE to SATA.
