We all feel the same impatience Chris but some soulsearching might be in order as well here.
Most of these expectations that are never realized are from the community with slightly unreasonable demands.
We have new hardware already (something next to a miracle looking back only a few years, already people are complaining that it's not fast enough).
You would have to really have your head buried in the ground to deny that OS4 is being developed (ported to PPC and even enhanced over previous versions) and actually soon to be released as beta (I'll go out on a limb and say that it will be a very usable beta).
Both of these things were top of the wish list a number of years ago and now they are here.
OK, the future beyond this is more uncertain at the moment but in reality nothing decisive has happened that is known so no real cause for concern as yet.
And still we want more. Now the talk is for 64 bit OS on dual 2.4 ghz 970's and all the kinds of major software being ported to Amiga? It's nice speculation but we have to keep at least one foot on the ground.
I'm looking forward to what I know is coming shortly and hoping for even more in the future.
With regards to the Amiga community one can always expect the unexpected and that is not necessarily meant in a negative way!

This makes me wish I hadn't posted that earlier drivel.

Right. Okay. I agree that some stuff has happened. I'm not personally making unreasonable demands (I know OS4 is in development, that the pre-release is near, and I'm not expecting it within any sort of timeframe although my hopes are slightly more optimistic), and I'm quite happy with the current AmigaOne hardware - I don't think I would get any benefit out of anything higher spec at the current moment in time, especially without the OS I actually want to run on it.
Usually the optimism on aw.net makes me happy, but it seems to be having the opposite effect today. I think I'll take a look at some screenshots of OS4 and then go to bed. That usually does the trick.

The problem is, people have been saying this for nearly ten years. There is always some good news around the next corner; in the next couple of weeks; etc. There never is. Even if the news ever happens (which it rarely does within the specified timeframe), all it leads to is another long string of disappointmen |
You must admit, though, that we are the first since those ten years that are able to show something tangible. It's not a "It will be cool" thing, it's actually real.
Believe me when I say that if we would have the possibilities, we would have started with this much earlier. However, we couldn't, and now, the situation for us was going from bad to worse, because there's not much left to work with. Delays are inevitable when you're working under circumstances like this.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest. I'm just getting slightly fed up of promises of good news and the news either not happening, or the initial wonderfulness of it all fizzling out like a dud firework before it even gets off the ground. |
As I said, it's not only promises from us. OS4 *is* a reality._________________ Thomas, the kernel guy

I see that Cloanto has just announced the imminent release of AmigaForever and Amiga Explorer versions 6, which they say are OS4 compatible.
Were they just WAITING for this annoucnement about KMOS before saying anything about their own release?
Nonetheless, this whole thing seems so bizarre even by Amiga enthusiast standards, that I can't make up my mind what to think of it all.
While I liked Bobssonsirjohnny's explanation of KMOS, I can't help going back to an earlier post of my own noting that the name reminds me of KMART and the _BLUE_ light specials.
Seriously, I have nothing against the idea of Thendic/Genesi/orwhateveritistoday paying for a port of OS4 to the Peg.
But it would be poetic justice if the "what's the name of your company today" shell game eventually is what keeps OS4 alive and out of BBRV's control.

About six or seven years ago now, I sent $100.00 to Impulse to upgrade from Imagine 5.0 to version 6.0. They later announced that they were going to wait until AmigaOS 4.0 was available. Maybe something will come out of that.
Or not.

Yikes turn my back on this thread for a few hours and look what?s happened, even more excitement!........I guess from reading the rest of this thread you have not mentioned specifically what this ?starting a brand new business venture? is exactly or did I miss it?
@Chris_Y
You have expressed well where most of us have been or perhaps still are about the Amiga and the ?roller coaster? ride it has provided. I have been quietly optimistic about events over the past couple of years and more so over the past 6 months. So much so I?m still holding on to my Windoze box running Win98, stubbornly refusing to ?upgrade?.

Microsoft is alleged to have said they have 50 of the best coders in the world working on Windoze....look how many years it has taken them and it is still far from perfect. Better each year, yes but still very far perfect. You (Hyperion) and the rest of the team have done amazing things in such a relatively short time.
Close, now SO close! I know there will be bugs etc. but thanks for the tremendous effort... I can?t wait to see the fruit of all this labor.
