I've been watching/lurking over at A.net on the progress of the next version of the Odyssey browser, version 1.23 I think. This is the version that amongst a lot of other things will allow us to watch many, if not most, of the videos on YouTube. Not all of them of course because of the variance of videos there, and see the thread itself for info on this:

http://www.amigans.net/modules/xforum/viewtopic.php?start=0&topic_id=6329&viewmode=&order=ASC&type=&mode=0

Anyway, I don't have an ID there to say thanks, but I did want to thank Kas, Fab, and everyone else over there that is working so hard on porting to OS4. The last update that was released (1.16 ?) to the average user was a huge improvement over the prior one, and it seems this version will be just as big an improvement, if not more.

So sincerely: thanks guys, it is very much appreciated! Any specific way I can contribute (meaning $$$ or testing, not coding :) )

@Nagasakee

They are doing VERY hard work, specially Kas1e, there is donation button on his site, I think he deserves some kind of donation.
Let's keep motivation up and running

Indded, a lot of work is being made thanks to Kas1e but alos Fab and Joerg who are helping Roman on various issues. Na dalso Thore for MUI updates.

@Nagasakee

SmTube can already read all YouTube videos, you should give it a try (OS4Depot).

1.16 was a nice update to have had recently! It's a major improvement over the previous version. Startup is a bit faster but esp. the responsiveness has become a lot better.

Looking forward to more new versions! :)

Youtube ? Sorry but I doubt most machines running AOS4.x have the CPU power to play you tube videos decently.
Unless we're talking about the X1000 but most of us don't have or want to spend that money..

But you probably would if you had the funds to do so without harming your stability in life. So, don't attempt to toss cold water on the efforts of others who are working very hard on this project. Every step forward on any front is a step forward for all of us.

@Jose

I could watch Youtube videos on a 500Mhz Celeron system running Ubuntu. Is a 667MHz PPC really too slow to watch Youtube?

@Moxee

I'm not tossing anything, the progress and work made are awesome and I really thank them, it's actually amazing someone is making such an effort. That said the original poster says that this port will allow us to play youtube videos, this won't happen, only a small portion of "us" have machines that will allow that.

@PhantomInterrogative

Yes, because your 500Mhz Celeron had video acceleration that the current AmigaOS status doesn't offer support for. When that is done things might change but it's not that easy, just look at the time it took for videolan on linux to get vdpau support...

I was actually surprised to find that my little 600MHz Sam 440ep could play back a YouTube video I made ages ago. SMTube rocks, as does mplayer. :)

You dont need odyssesy to watch youtube on os4. I highly recommend you install QT and MUI Mplayer and use and SMTube. ITs awesome!

Does that mean ClipDown is out of date? Given the overhead of all those packages together perhaps not yet.

Done. It's not very much, as I just bought a new computer, but I want to at least say "Thank you" in a meaningful way.

@PhantomInterrogative

As said your Celeron system most likely uses HW acceleration for video playback.

(that's why also 200Mhz x86 can playback fullHD video when HW acceleration is available, prime example is RasberryPi that is said to have 200Mhz P2 level of CPU performance)

And SAM440 does not have SIMD or L2 cache (like celeron does), both can affect up to 20% in processing performance.
(Radeon GPU do have video acceleration, but we do not have driver+application support for that)

Another advantage that your x86 has is JIT for javascript, also that has big impact on many web things.
(IIRC, JIT for javascript exist for PPC in some form, just not yet ported to our OSs.)

IMHO, it's a great achievement that SMTube enables SAM440 to playback youtube videos. (trying it is on the todo list for me)

(it's annoying how CPU heavy most web sites are, I believe 1Ghz and L2 cache is minimum for acceptable web performance)

@Nagasakee

I currently have version 1.16 which is very good, is there another release for OS4 available or being worked on for a release soon?

@sicky

Yes it is version 1.23

Latest I just saw on A.Net is that this new version itself is basically complete but has some dependencies on a newer MUI that isn't released yet.

Best thing is to read page 22-23 of the thread I mentioned for "accurate" info. I'm both paraphrasing and a non-programmer so bound to say it wrong.

Most stuff uses H264 so yeah, you can play anything but at very low resolutions. I think lower than 480p is not acceptable, most stuff is being done at 720p at least nowdays.

@Jose

On a Pegasos 2 / MorphOS, you can watch 360p H264 Youtube videos in odyssey at about 30-35% CPU usage. So it's really more than enough.
480p are also fine, be it in h264 or vp8/vp9.

For HD videos, a more powerful machine is needed, obviously.

That is good to hear. I stand corrected.

As others have said in this thread it does too happen. I can't confirm that since I am using an XE-G4 and an X1000. Even if it were true, that would change over time as more users are able to pick up Amigas with more power. Please be positive. As to me getting YouTube to play videos on my X1000, I can't. Somehow I lack the mental prowlness to get Qt and smTube to work. I probably could if I kept working at it, but I also lack the interest. I've reached the age where if things don't install and work correctly I just don't care. There are plenty of weeds to pull in my gardens to keep me busy.

You are right, Moxee, to garden is more useful that to waste time watching YouTube videos.

Nevertheless, what kinds of problems do you have with Qt and/or smTube ?
Is it Qt installation problem or smTube configuration problem ?

PM me if you want
