@Nicsoft

I would not hope that Freescale will invest in development of new PPC processors. They are bought by a company that earns money with ARM, Freescale themselves also develops ARM, processor development is expensive. They will produce existing PPC processors as long as there is enough need to make profit with it but that is all. PPC will end in a couple of years.

I don't think PPC will die, since the main market is not computers. It's mainly other things..!

It's this attitude that I hate about the MorphOS community.

You hate that we are proud of our MorphOS?

@TRIPOS

even if it should outperform AmigaOS on the same PPC hardware, it is like a ant race compared to 2015 standards, both are far behind anything including even smartphones.

And your "MorphOS NG" platform that you claim is "Aros done right" only exists in your phantasy

The bad that it is true I use the three systems and MorphOS is better than AmigaOS4.x, the best of AmigaOS4.x is to has more software and games than MorphOS.

Like some people always emphasize how superior AmigaOS is compared to MorphOS or how superior AROS is to MorphOS or AmigaOS?

True, but still raising better ants to run faster than other ants can be fun we can not win bigger ones so we have to race in a league our own.

@thread

The name and genuine source code evolution from AOS1 are the strong points for AOS4.

MorphOS PPC was started years before AOS4 PPC, that's why it went ahead and still is ahead in some ways.

@OlafS25
>PPC will end in a couple of years.

PPC production will continue 10+ years per new Freescale SoC chips.
That is pretty strong "feature" for niche platform CPU.

There was PPC Next genaration core in freescale roadmap when AMP cores were "hot".
(IIRC, in April 2013, but after that, silence)

At the current rate, there might not come new cores from Freescale. But future is uncertain as usual.

((at least the Freescale highest performance chips are still planned to be new PPC models in 2016, but most likely just more e6500 cores there with little or no core updates. http://www.freescale.com/files/training/doc/QorIQ-Layerscape-Webinar.pdf
page4 "multicore roadmap"
then this might hint otherwise: http://events.fortiss.org/fileadmin/uploads/events/James_Freescale_QorIQ_Aerospace_Defense_20151013.pdf
"Freescale investing in both ARM and Power..." page8 ))

For legacy reasons.... No new core. So, in 10 years you'll be able to upgrade from your e5500 or e6500 AmigaOne to a.... e5500 or e65000 core AmigaOne. See the problem? PPC is, for all intent and purpose, dead and buried. I very much doubt Freescale will even invest in a die/process shrink of PPC cores since that costs a lot of money these days.

+1

as I wrote... I think they will produce what they have as long as it is profitable but no new processor generations

I hate to burst every ones bubble, but MorphOS and AmigaOS4 are the same thing. Neither is better, both are rubbish (but fun).

@OlafS25

There will be new Power core processors from Freescale.
But perhaps no new cores (they just do not say it straight).

@KimmoK

my prediction is they will use what they have but no investments in new processor generation. The focus now is on ARM. They were bought by a company that is using ARM too so concentrating on ARM saves money for the new combined company, PPC does not fit there anymore. But we will see.

@Templario

Given you said future perhaps another option will appear in the near future: AmigaOne emulation on x86.

Also in future, perhaps a PPC VM for UAE running on PPC, for near native code. With this UAE, OS4 would be able to run itself!

PowerPCs have no future, so it's "funny" to see that the PowerPC-based entries dominate on the votes.

@TRIPOS: I see no future on keeping the same Amiga o.s. limits. There might be a future only for solutions that remove such limits, even if this means dropping the compatibility with the legacy software.
