@ruben

I`m very happy about OS4 version of ProTracker, music program where everything began :)

Well, there is one thing I`d like to inform you all about :

have you seen RENOISE - the newest tracker on market? Looks very promising! Actually - everything I dream about is implemented into RENOISE!!!

Please check
www.renoise.com
and you`ll see what I`m talking about.

Maybe there is possibility to port this fantastic program to AOS4? I just hope so.

All best! dj.

Sorry for the delay. Staring at a PC screen all day at work takes my energy away to get back to PT in the evening.
Anyway, I'll send the source code over to Hans Joerg tonight and try to get the MOS version up during the weekend.

@djnick

Yup, I've seen it. I find the interface quite cluttered, but i haven't used it in extent yet, so I can't say if it gets intuitive over time.
My favourite tracker (until PT5 gets ready) would be MadTracker.

@ruben

Not cluttered. It has everything needed - just take a look on keyboard shortcuts and you`ll see that everything from PRO to Octamed shortcuts is implemented, it has even multiple Undo / Redo for any note or sample edit!!! Amazing. Try F-keys - its all there :)

I never liked OctaMED because it has its own shortcuts for, lets say - play - on all trackers it`s Right CTRL [on PCs] or RAlt on Amigas while on OSS it is CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE [!] - too much to press just to play your masterpiece...

Get Renoise, play with it - you`ll really love it [like I fall in love when I saw it last night for the first time!] - and try to implement as much as you can :) and of course - make ProTracker a shareware program - when you get money for what you do - you`ll definitelly have will to implement more and more ideas :)

all best! dj.

Renoise is the best tracker i've seen on windows yet and really close to the right feelin'... but with a little or alot of work, Protracker will once again be the King of trackers. I'll switch back immediately, no looking back. It's a legend... I'm waiting in anticipation!

@mepmepmep

One more link for all tracker musicians:

http://www.skale.org/

Have you seen SkaleTracker? It is great-looking FREEWARE tracker, very very similar to FastTracker and has Mixer & VSP plugins! Amazing. But I never liked they way it works. Each panel I open on a button, I`ll have to find Exit button. The same as on FastTracker which is not very good.

Check it, mught get some great ideas for ProTracker5 :)

Yup, that's the best looking tracker out there, it's definetly an inspiration for pt5.
I also don't like the open/close functionality for the panels. And, it uses a custom file dialog, which I don't think is comfortable nowadays.

Hey Ruben! Any news on the OS4 version?
Any news in general? And updated/current feature list would be really nice!

Hans-Joerg has the sources. He reported some success compiling it, with some issues that I hope won't be too difficult to resolve.
I'll post the new screenshots/feature list by this weekend at most.

In the meantime, feel free to post suggestions/etc.. at the oficial forums, there's no link to it on protracker.info yet, but here:

@ruben

yep! looking great! But to me - the best one [and I tried them all] is Renoise! ReNoise can create samples out of each track so you can import it into any mixing program [like Cubase or similar] and remaster the song!

But in Skale there is a mixer on each track which eases everything a lot!
Whatever - both are great trackers :)

dj.

Following the recent trend for digging out old threads - and the fact I have been trying to sort out something on the PC with relation to trackers recently which lead me to a screenshot of PT5 alpha2 on wikipedia, I remembered seeing the news item posted here and wanted to go visit the site.

However, it appears that all the links posted in the various news items/forum threads are now dead. So, basically, is there any news on the Protracker 5 project at all?

Quote:
PT5 (not PTII anymore) has reached a stage I feel it's ready to start beeing ported outside of Windows, so I'm looking for someone to start and maintain a port to OS4.

You mean it's gone beyond PT2.3 OS4 port that hasn't been updated? This really annoys me about A1/OS4, it's came so late that all the real Amiga software has been ported to the PC, and now it has to be ported back from the PC to the Amiga. I find this insulting! (As with a lot of things I do. )

Quote:
It's very portable, the whole thing is C++/SDL based, the only platform depedent part is the file requester class, which needs to written for each platform since it's using the OS stuff.

You mean that custom file window is gone? It just won't be the same.

Quote:
So, any decent programmer who knows how to open a file requester in OS4 should be able to port pt5 within 1 hour

Err, ASL.

@Hypex

This was not a port of the old 2.x interface, but a complete rewrite of Protracker. The GUI was a custom built one like the PT of old, having a feel somewhere between the 2.x and 3.x interfaces, but much more vividly coloured.

You can see what it looked like here (courtesy or the wayback machine as the site vanished between 28 Sep 2004 and Jan 2005)

The main code for this version was being done on Windows, with the OS4/MOS ports being handled by other people with access to those machines and SDKs .

Yes, I thought it was more up to date. Wasn't there a v3 and even v4 for the Amiga back in the day? I remember a very nice screenshot of a newer PT once, but never saw it on Aminet AFAIK.

What surpised me about the PT OS4 port was that the GUI was based on the old PT2.3, it even has PT2.3d JAN?UARY 1993 on screen! Now I know, being an ELF, it would have to be rewritten in C mostly. So why the old GUI?

Yes, very nice and different, almost like a later update to the newer Amiga one I saw.

As stated here, yes.

It wasn't until I got to page 3 that I realised it was a dirty necro.

Now i've read it, what did happen in the end?

About better options, currently there is DBPro3 under development (for MorphOS2.x and AmigaOS3.x/4.x). Here are 2 photos http://teleinfo.pb.edu.pl/powerdev/gallery/index3pl.html .
