I am going to assemble an unofficial BoingBag 3 for OS 3.9, to be supported with a web page, installer and so on.

The objectives of doing this are as follows:

- To provide for a transition to OS4 by including integrated installations of the 68k equivalents of new OS4 functionality, such as APDF, AmigaPython, TTF library etc. etc. (Note, this doesn't mean the 68K compiled versions of Hyperion code. Only stuff available on Aminet)

- To better integrate the betas and contributions included with 3.9. And provide nice GlowIcons for them.

- To include integrated functionality required by today's modern operating systems. So pre-configured and nicely integrated versions of Samba, YAM and AWeb 3.4 for example. Internet clients and servers will be a focus.

- To provide as many 3.9 bugfix patches as possible, with automatic installation (all those currently on Aminet, plus as many more as can be found, plus online help or an English "Das Buch", in English at least to start with).

Comments? Ideas? No "68k is dead" kiddies please.

In the future, if this is successful, I'd like to build a development addon, that provides modern development tools, ready integrated (will try to get rights to include some commercial bits like TurboText or WShell). And if that is successful, then I'll try and build a better Unix layer than that offered by GeekGadgets.

Nice idea. But you should ask the authors of the included software for permission. A distribution on Aminet does not mean that it is public domain and may be redistributed.

Bye,
Thomas

This sounds like an excellent idea! I wish you luck with this project. I might even donate my (unreleased) wb3.9 Arexx scripts for it. I like the concept of merging the internet/networking utilities a bit more. Could you find a way of launching Unarc when you download a file from AWeb. I think also a version of Mui with all the latest classes would be quite useful seeing as it will be in OS4.0

Don't worry, I will check with everyone and all the licenses before including anyone else's stuff. In the first instance, or if anyone objects, I will just link to their Aminet distribution, and possibly just have the Installer only install it if it can find the archive.

I will post later tonight what I propose to include - and ask for suggestions.

Great idea Mobileconnect!

I've kind of been tracking down OS4 related stuff myself lately and updating by system. This would be good thing because it could get people up-to-speed, taking an interest again (if lost!?) and supporting developers who are working on OS4 projects. Anyway, got a few more suggestions for inclusion...

Smart File System (SFS) - OS4 filesystem of choice, just installed it the other day and its a good improvement over FFS (surprisingly painless to set up too)

Warp DT - the guy behind these has written the new OS4 datatypes, see www.warpdt.co.uk

I think the Samba could be a bit ambitious/too time consuming for a BB because its pretty complex, but I could well be wrong. FTP Mount (mounts FTP directories like "real" drives, particularly good for LAN use) could be a good (although not as featured) alternative to Samba.

Let me know if you need any help, would being willing to lend a hand if i can

That's really a good idea.

Here another suggestion:
Make sure to include Thomas Richter's (un)official shell update which was distributed over Aminet after BB2 was released.

Here is my initial list of what I think should go in it:

1) Updates to 3.9 apps and contributions, together with an installer that properly configures and integrates them.
-ttf.library
-AWNPipe
-SmartFileSystem
-xad
-AHI
-Picasso96
-AWeb
-DefIcons
-VINCEd
-Genesis
-AMPlifier
-MooVid/Action
-ReAction
-AmigaMail
-PatchRAM, FFS4514p, ShellUpdate
-XAD
-KingCON (Be nice to include a choice of shells, like how Unix offers bash, tcsh ksh etc. Amiga users could choose between AmigaShell, KingCon, WShell, VINCEd)
-DataTypes
-ClassAction
-WarpOS
-OpenURL

I'm in the process of trying to find out if there are any later versions, even betas, of these since the last BB2 or Aminet releases.

2) The following new items, either to add missing core functionality, or put in place a stepping stone to OS4
-finkelshelltools
-envhandler
-DVD-RAM/MakeDrivers
-AmigaPython
-SANA-2 drivers for PCMCIA cards
-HTML datatype
-SGrab
-AmiSSL (v1 since only Ibrowse uses v2)
-fat95
-ZedRexx (since it's now free)
- MUI (controversial this I suppose since people either love MUI or hate it, but since it's now going to be part of OS4, I prefer to see it as offering multiple APIs (MUI, Reaction, Triton etc.) like Mac OS offer Cocoa, Carbon etc.
-Triton
-lha
-XPKDisk
--CompactFlash device
-pcmser.device
-diskimage.device (would be good to have some nice tools that auto mount .adfs like Mac OS mounts .dmg files)
-APDF
-GhostScript
-SetDST
-VisualPrefs
-Warp3D

To follow this up with development tools my first thoughts are to

- GCC (a nice version, not a GeekGadgets one)
- stlport
-Triton dev
-MUI dev
-x11 (would need some work, since it's not possible to register AmiWin anymore)
-Amplifier SDK
-Warp3D SDK
- mesa

I think you're taking on an endless task here, rather like Fred Fish long ago. But the best of luck and good for you for thinking of it.

But why MUI? Not that I'm against it at all (I don't see it much different from Reaction), but I thought MUI was, to use the *nix expression, "deprecated". All OS4 stuff (that is, compiled for PPC), has to use Reaction, IIRC.

OS4 will include a PPC version of MUI - MUI4, and some of the standard apps will need it.

Any further feedback before I make a start?

Also, is there anyone else out there looking at mobile phone technologies compatibility with Amiga? Things like irda, bluetooth and syncing ?

What's the best address book and calendar app out there?

@Mobileconnect

I'm willing to contribute to this effort, i'm quite capable of writing a decent installer, so i'm more then willing to help with this.

Also, i'm willing to aid in the creation of a decent X11, my C skills aren't as good as i'd like, but if i can aid, then i'll aid :P

BTW, i asume you meant sdl instead of stl?

If you need my aid. mail me at ochal at kefren dot be

Cheers

@Mobileconnect

I suggest you to add the cli.datatype (IIRC there's a recompilation for OS3.5 on AmiNet) to your list with a new config file to use XAD as the default archive-listing-tool. It allows then to view the content of an archive with multiview. Maybe useful for some users...

@Amon_Re

OK, I mean STL and SDL (there's already both, but the STLport isn't so hot, while the SDL is done)

@Amon_Re

x11 would be great wouldn't it. I've got hold of the libx11 code, which the author says we can play with freely. This allows you to compile x11 code as if it was native intuition/MUI. It would be nice to change that to intuition/reaction. And fix it.

Anyway, feel free to send me ideas or volunteer to have a go at bits and pieces.
