Don`t want to p--- on your shoes, but I`m having trouble with my radeon 7000 display since update 3. I guess the card is not working as I only appear to have picasso screen options. Was working fine before.

As i understand it, it only has to be changed in the Kicklayout-text file,
hasn't it? So if my crash wouldn't has done something to the boot partition, it
should have gone through the booting process flawlessly, which it hasn't. As
others have the same problems, i don't find the courage to try again and maybe
REALLY crash something badly this time, i'll wait for a workaround.

Did you try re-attaching your screenmodes to the Radeon in P96Mode?

OK I've checked my firware version in Uboot 1.1.1 and it reports Oct 4th 2004!!!!!!!!! Oh b*****r!! The supplier ensured be all the relevant updates were installed! However no excuse I should have checked.

@Raziel + everyone else who has the GREY SCREEN problem.

try this:

Remove User-startup line from startup-sequence.

and also check for empty lines in startup-sequence (ie lines that is dead...ie a wrong destination path or assign to a dir that aint active anymore)


if it works with a minimalistic ss+us then step by step build it back up to find the problem....my guess is AWEB! (beeing assigned to ram:)

The active uboot version/date is displayed first, when the computer is reset.
Hold Esc during the initialization if it goes by too fast to read.

As for reverting to your previous setup, the easy way would be to just boot without startup-sequence, insert the backup CD you made, and type:
Copy CD0:path/to/backup/root/#? DH0: ALL CLONE

That's assuming you can get to the CD drive, of course.
Then you'd have to turn the machine off and on to make sure it reloads the older kickstart.

As for updating uboot, you can do that regardless of the state of your OS4 installation. (You may need another machine to prepare the file though).
Read the docs that come with the March update and pick the method you like best. I usually update using TFTP so that I don't have to burn a CD, but it requires extracting the updater.image from the floppy or ISO and having a TFTP server running on a networked machine.

But that would mean a program is causing the crash.
For me even triggering the Early-Startup menu causes to crash!
Anyone else?

I don't think it's a programs issue, i'd rather point on a Kickstart module
(PCIGraphics.card?)

well try it but right now it seems its not that problem indeed.

i understood it as if it was when loading workbench and not kickstart.

Thanks for all the advice.

However I feel like singing "there's a hole in my bucket". Yes I made a backup using the OS4.0 CDRW driver. No the MA1 upgraded to R3 will not see the CDRW disk even though I've activated the driver!

Ok tried that but it does not save it. when I reboot i go back to 640x480 4 colour mode. Note if I replace startup file and kicklayout with my old files I can at least get 24bit mode 1024x960

After getting the grey screen of nothing, I download and put on the last firmware update, then reinstalled PreRelease 3.

And ..

Worked fine. Well, I had to reset the p96 thingy, but it's fine.

Looks like that was my problem.

lucky you i have the latest uboot installed weird that radeon 9800 locks up but voodoo3/3000 works fine
