That's 1/10 of MS cash!

The new xbox will loose money too, says MS!

Sure it will. Both Sony and MS loose money. They know they get it back from the games sales. If they used a price to earn money on the machines not that much people would buy them. They would buy a pc instead. More for the money.

I exchanged my ps2 for a xbox as i want to have a multimedia machine under my tv. Big and ugly as he** but it does its thing. Im waiting until ps3 comes so i can see difference in both and what you can do with them until i buy. If i want games i would definately buy a ps3. I lend my xbox to a friend some time and i borrow his ps2 to be able to play games i like.

Both xbox360 and ps3 will be great. Nintendo will be good to but not as strong i believe. But then its for gaming and it has fun games the other dont. Just buy them all :) and use amiga.

@Kicko

Buy a XBox and make it run Linux.
You get a decent and cheap Linux-pc and MS looses money, as long as you don't buy the games

The real money here is in licences to produce titles for the system. Nintendo figured this out long ago. So they sell the hardware at cost (whatever "cost" means here) to make it attractive, and hopefully you'll buy a pile of games for it. If they get $10 per title, and see sales of 100 million units, they make $1 billion on that.

Since the software sales are what counts, the more machines you can get into your "installed base", the better, because it means more license revenues.

Then you can go to a publisher, tell them the cost of membership is $5 million, plus $10 for every unit they ship, with the potential to sell at least 10 million units of any given title they publish.

Lots of coin to be had this way. No one would buy an $800 game machine... Doesn't take much to spend that on a console and a collection of games...

I'm waiting for the PS3.
I'd never buy an Xbox, and I hope and believe a lot of people will hold out to see what the PS3 can do before buying any next gen console.

Long may M$ loose money on the Xbox and get out of that market.

however its the xbox division thats loosing money, that means the overall xbox department, including game sales - xbox is a a moneysink, though they are getting closer to turn a profit. most likely introducing the xbox360 will put them firmly back in red.

Are you sure of this? Sony is in the unique position of owning many of the companies that make the components for the PS2. And I'd guess they'd have huge buying power over any components that they don't make themselves based upon their rather large electronic manufacturing in general. So why should it be assumed they lose money?

MS lose on the console? Probably. Nintendo? yup, probably. Sony? probably not.

Just guesses of course, I don't want to let facts get in the way of my comments

@terrahwk

Im meant just the hardware, they for sure get money for the games. However i havent followed news, maybe they produce their machines for lower and do get money but then i dont believe. They use the same way, sell cheaper machines.
And for PS3 its the same. To get more interested they sell it lower price then after some time even lower etc. And that is when im buying it hehe.

Until then im using this xbox as i know M$ loosed some money on my machine and i use homebrew software on it hehe.

AH THX. I remember what my teacher always said: lose has lost 1 "o"

@all

I know that MS gets money from licences of sold games! But FOUR BILLION DOLLARS are alot of money! There are companies out there that don't have that money! Developing a game computer doesn't cost that much!
I think these 4 billion dollars are from everything: development, advertisemnet, production and revenues from licences!

In Europe the xbox isn't sold very much. Plus most games are pirated so MS won't get any money!
And in Japan the xbox isn't really available. Eventhe first Playstation still ousells the xbox!

Heh i hate myself for correcting people but the lose/loose thing is something thats started to really annoy me, it appears to have spread over the entire interweb.

Back on topic.

The scary thing about the massive loss ms made with xbox is that have stated that they are more than willing to make the same kind of losses with xbox 360 to establish a place in the market. Can losing this amount of money really be considered to be establishing a place? Most other companies would have to declare bankruptcy with this level of "success".

Gates obviously wants to dominate this market so badly, he's prepared to risk a lot for it. Dim witted fool that he is.

I've heard this before: buy an Xbox to hurt Microsoft. You're taking $100 out of their pocket.

Well, no. Not for me. $300 is quite a lot of money for me, but not even a drop in the ocean for Microsoft.

How about adapting OS4 to run on the X box? that would be a good investment!

In order to develop anything for the XBox, you'd need a licence from Microsoft or you'd have to reverse engineer the platform (like they did for the version of Linux on the XBox). On the first count Microsoft isn't going to slit their own throats by allowing a port of a competitor's OS to the XBox, and on the second count reverse-engineering is largely illegal in the U.S. so Amiga would end up with a costly lawsuit on their hands.

I would have at least liked to see AROS on the XBox but it is not to be. XBox is full of custom chips which makes it hard to port to unless you write it in WinCE and DirectX.

I was gonna suggest they make OS4 for X box and keep it secret, but I guess they couldn't keep it secret for long.

Custom chips... yes, they're a bummer. Classic Amigas are full of them, so AmigaOS has trouble emulating AmigaOS!
