Poll : What should the next generation be:
Much much cheaper but expandable....
Way way more powerful, damn the cost...
A laptop, a wireless eeePC killer....
Commodity hardware with OS4 ported to it...
Efika style but 600MHz+...
Pancake-Waffle with whipped cream...
You've missed the obvious...I'll post why...

Time to give your opinion on what Amiga Next Generation Hardware
needs to be to get the ball rolling, the kind of thing that might make
you redirect funds, work overtime, get a second job delivering papers
or some other insane option like street corner begging.

@kindergip

Maybe Acube should "simply" resale the YDL Power Station with OS4.1 pre-installed.

@ZeroG

sam with around 1ghz cpu, maybe more memory for the gfx chip, a pci on the board who could use all gfx card (full dimensions). all the rest are perfect IMHO (usb,sata,.....). and IMHO if 100 euros more no problems.

@kindergip

That TeraSoft quad core G5 tower is only $1895 for a complete system.

Why aren't AmigaInc (or ACube or Hyperion, who are the only ones who ever do anything) OEMing this box, slapping an Amiga logo on it, and shipping it TOMORROW?

But I still voted mini laptop... because they are awesome.

@Jeremy_Reimer

I agree, give me a laptop, mini or ortherwise. I challenge ACube (or someone else) to make a nanoITX/PicoITX board that would fit into a mini laptop case. What would be really neat is if it were a laptop that actually had decent battery life (half a day at least). I'm still waiting for a laptop that only needs to be recharged once a day so that I can leave the power brick at home. I fully realize that, in order to keep the weight/size down, it wouldn't have desktop-level specs; that's ok, so long as it's usable for most things.

@laptop vote

Yes, a wireless marvel that is different, fast, powerful and
efficient. OWB, Wookiechat, SabreMSN and YAM.

@power vote

Wow, quad core candidate in less than 30 seconds!

It could be made cheaper in a number of ways.

Swap the 70GB SAS drive for a much larger SATA drive, that should save a few hundred dollars or even more if Terra Soft ships it with a 10,000 or 15,000 drive as standard.

If the SAS controller could be left off the board altogether and a PCI-X SATA-II card used instead, that will probably save another few hundred.

If it can use standard DDR2 instead of registered memory, you might save another hundred or more.

Because it's an EATX board you can even use different cases and PSU's, though you probably won't save anything there, but at least you have could have a choice of quality enclosures.

If Acube can come to an arrangement with Terra Soft I think a significant upgrade to the A1 priced somewhere between $1300 and $1500 could easily be within reach. I'm sure that Acube would like to see this happen as much as we do.

@kindergip

I'd like to see:

-A PSX3 port of MorphOS and/or AmigaOS4.

-A powerbook/ibook/mac mini/g5 port of MorphOS and/or AmigaOS4.

I don't want hardware produced in a few hundreds of units as it's expensive, hard to find and has poor price/performance ratio. These small boards mean even more hard work for developers: they have to port their OSes to various boards with just a few hundreds of users instead of supporting just a pair of mass produced products.

OS4 is already out for MacMini PPC :)

Not entirely legal :) Not sure if it's leaked stuff or some dude coded that on his own.

- Seeing Yellow Dog Linux also realised for SAM or any future AmigaOS computer, as we need powerfull Linux to make it more then hobby machine
- Seeing SAM as laptop base as those net laptops today. MiniITX is OK but its about time a laptop Amiga is realised
- Seeing AmigaOS ported to existing PPC hardware

@kindergip

I'd love to see a PS3 port of OS4, but after seeing an EeePC at the airport, I'd gladly take one of those instead.

Commodity hardware with OS4 ported to it...

because it covers all the other selections.
(and because commodity hardware is easy to get your hands on there is plenty of time for Pancake-Waffle with whipped cream...)

But I won't mind a PS3, xbox360 or MAC PPC port.

back when i really really wanted os4 linux was not so useable. nor did we have things like pandora and portable gadgets to spend the money on. os4 for the cost it is would have been a wonderfull thing on a pc. as a gamble platform i can only think i could afford an efika. cost is my issue. i'll sacrifice some power for it. i'd like to be in the ballpark though even on the cheap end and see how things pan out. it would be awfull to shell out so much money and see the problems a1 hardware had. at the same time it would be fun to be a part of a new developing computer system.

i guess i'm voting os4 for pc. arrrggg. sorry! or the efika.

Good ideas, it's not like the Amiga has several
poweruser apps dying for a quadcore. More like,
if we had it, things could happen.

Cost reducing that puppy would be a good start.

@kindergip

I voted for a high end board, 3D apps are my first love & rendering take a lot of grunt. If my micro were to go, I'd pick up a SAM for a replacement.

Yes, I have been looking at this hardware for some time. I do own a PS3 and recently did post a comment to Rogue (Hyperion) how great it would be to have it for the machine. He did mention performance would be the issue, specifically the visualisation of the OS, as there is only access to Frame buffer to display/update the screen, there is no RSX GPU hardware acceleration. What a shame really?

With regards to the PowerStation, hardware... it does look good however there is another piece of hardware worth looking at that includes CELL + RSX GPU unblocked... and that is this...

http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/sony/bcu-100.shtml

or

http://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/ext/ZEGO/ZEGO.shtml

also... http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/200808/08-095E/index.html

The Sony Bcu-100. Whilst it is not in a desktop form factor, it is a completely open system. Os4 could be made to run on this and have full access to RSX... can you imagine the demos on this thing once coders bang the CELL and RSX...

Funnily enough I am actually considering purchasing one of these and simply putting it on my desk, Pizza Box style, and resting my LCD on top of. Its a full 64bit computer with Terrasoft's Yellow Dog Linux, but this time fully accelerated - not like the cobbled PS3!

I could then run an emulated Amiga environment within my YelloDog Linux running on this beast. Obviously all the open source software, games etc will work very well as this has RSX acceleration... Why not OS4 then!!!

Some pdf's...

http://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/ext/ZEGO/files/Cell_Computing_Whitepaper.pdf
http://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/ext/ZEGO/files/BCU-100_Whitepaper.pdf

IF ONLY...

I don't care.
I'm glad we've got the SAM motherboard and I'll be happy with whatever hardware improvements come along.

A revolution, that what I really want.

The first Amiga was revolutionary in many ways, the next one should be as well.

Redefining computing and implementing brand new concepts takes a lot of work and won't happen overnight but it can be done. There's plenty of room for innovation in computer technologies, thanks to the lack of vision from M$ and Intel which has held progress back for 20 years.

Meanwhile I'll settle for an Amiga laptop running OS4.

Almost makes me want to cancel my vote for the LAPTOP option.

But power to the people means getting it into people's hands,
and for me, that means a laptop because so many people are now
in that market.
