HONG KONG -- (Marketwire) -- 01/07/09 -- Commodore International Corporation (PINKSHEETS: CDRL) ("CIC") and Asiarim Corporation (OTCBB: ARMC) ("Asiarim") announce today that they have entered into a 50/50 joint venture agreement to facilitate the manufacturing and distribution of a range of computer products under the brand name of "Commodore" for the territories of Asia and Africa.

Under the terms of the joint venture agreement and exclusive trademark license agreement, CIC will contribute the exclusive license brand to Asia and Africa for a period of 5 years plus an automatic extension of a further 5 years, and Asiarim will contribute up to a maximum of US$7 million. CIC shall also have the right to exchange its 50% interests in the joint venture for 50% interests in Asiarim, subject to the joint venture company achieving certain sales conditions. The joint venture company shall be responsible for providing sourcing and development of new products for CIC and its affiliates worldwide, and the market and distribution of Commodore branded products in Asia and Africa.

The first series of computer products will be the netbooks which was recently unveiled at the IFA electronics show in Berlin. Mr. Ben van Wijhe, President and CEO of CIC, states, "This opportunity will allow both parties to integrate their strengths in order to secure a successful business case in the fast growing market of low cost netbooks and mobile internet devices. The management and shareholders of Asiarim are very eager to introduce to the market the new products and services exclusively developed for Commodore. The initial reaction from the market is very positive and retailers are willing to buy the new line of Commodore netbooks which continue the tradition of the famous Commodore C64."

In a recent research report, notebook computers overtook the desktop PC computers in Q3 08 by strong sales of the netbook computer. Notebook PC shipments rose almost 40% in the third quarter of 2008 compared to 2007. The total sales of notebooks and netbooks reach about 38.6 million units in 2008 while the desktop PC shipments for the same period declined by 1.3% to about 38.5 million units. Mr. Wijhe further added, "The netbook is a full service internet device that is portable, affordable and connectable for the new generation of people on the go."

Mr. Te Hwai Ho, President of Asiarim, stated, "We are thrilled to be working with Commodore. This joint venture with CIC is an excellent opportunity for the Company to diversify its business scope to market and distribute the Commodore range of products in Asia and Africa." Notebook PC shipments in China alone are forecasted to reach about 8 million units in 2008. Mr. Ho added, "China offers an exciting and challenging market with over 200 million internet users and many of whom will eventually shift to a mobile internet device such as a netbook, providing a vast market for Commodore range of computer products."

I'm glad to see Commodore diong well again.

How about Amiga trying something like this? Make a cheap netbook with Amiga OS on it, and sell it as a cheap solution to Africa and Asia. Have a totally Amiga solution and try it out on these people, see what it's worth. No windows or Linux options.

There's no alternative to Windows and Mac and Linux. I think Amiga could attract a lot of people from Windows and others.

I think this could work. We're not at the right point in time though

@fairlanefastback

If I had a billion dollars (in venture capital), I would acquire both Commodore and Amiga, follow Apple's playbook of the last 5-10 years and get real cozy with Google and Intel where it makes perfect sense. With the right product/marketing strategy, you could easily make Commodore (and the Amiga) a great success story no matter how sour Commodore's history was.

If I could just have one meeting with Larry Ellison (of Oracle), Eric Schmidt (of Google) and Paul Otellini (of Intel); I would try to convince them that a great collaboration of innovative ideas born through technology delivered with a classic brand such as Commodore (with Amiga as the platform) would be the ultimate recipe for success.

OKAY!... so I'm a little too optimistic, but so is every other arm chair visionary out there

@Al4
I don't think they are doing well.
Since there is no reason to buy their Netbook instead of an alternate product, I guess they won't get any better.
Has their Gaming Desktop Computer company shut down yet?

Won't happen as AInc stated from the very beginning that they are a software company.

O.K. - they stated a lot that turned ou to be u ntrue later, but this obviously is one of the very rare examples where they kept their word up to now...

@Dandy

The whole Commodore Amiga argument though extends again to what is an Amiga or Commodore computer. Is it bog standard hardware with OS4.x converted to run on Intel etc, or is it propriety hardware again and a dedicated OS for that hardware that makes it a true Amiga?

Whatever happens, to make "Amiga" a worldwide brand one would have to popularise the OS, almost like a Linux derivative... add some amazing media/game applications, serve the business community of sorts, add some type of mobile computing support etc... then maybe... but will it be a true Amiga or just an Amiga inspired Os that tries to offer something different...

No doubt, any future "Amiga" centric company would have to have strategic alliances with companies like Google, with net based services and some sort of cloud computing support for the future. It should also have a quick access menu type feature like the Ps3 or modern consoles, you can use it as a media hub or a full computer. Net/browser infrastructure would need to be robust... either using already available open source software like FireFox or building a browser with similar capabilities...

I believe the future of computing is online and not necessary on the platform of choice, which will essentially become more and more of a client terminal in the future... we'll see how it progresses, but as wireless broadband, both mobile based and WiFi based continues to propagate, so online based computing and computing services (such as application hosting etc) will become more popular... of course it may take a very long time for the 3rd world to catch up... but it will happen, to some degree anyway!

Q!
