Ideas on Postscript all in one printers ? [SOLVED]

Hi everybody,

I am planning to buy an all in one printer for my WinXP and my Amiga SAM (OS4.1 as well as Linux). Should be connected via network maybe plus USB. Therefore should be a color Laser Printer with Postscript.
Anybody an idea ?
Do you suggest a certain manufacturer ? (Because of Linux/compatible Betascan drivers ?)
At the moment I am looking at:

OKI - MC560
Kodak ESP 9
Kyocera FS-C1020MFP
Epson CX21NF
Lexmark X544N
Brother 9450CDN

Whereas the last two models are prefered, because they are cheaper. No Idea if there is a HP model...

Thanx for advise or ideas

@gerograph

Do not buy Lexmark Printer. I made the mistake to buy one several years ago and it never worked on my Amiga, because of the custom drivers it requires.
I have very good experience with HP Phosmart C6280.
Of course if you can buy HP 9050, go for it. It is the best printer I ever touched - prints fast and reliable, the toner will last for years and most of all - it is prohibitely big to steal.

Well, but you are talking about PCL Printer, aren't you ?? I think using a Postscript laser printer would be saver...

Anyway, has your photosmart an ADF which works stable on a long time basis...

but thanks for hints

Linux Printer page
http://www.openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=Anyone

another linux site quote:
'Any printer that does 'PCL' should work'

we really need to have an Amiga compatibility listing like this.

Lexmark printers always used too much ink/toner for me, so now I look for the cheapest ink / popular and work backwards to find a printer that suits my need

Or two printers, one fancy ALL in ONE Cannon/HP for a PC, another for just RAW / cheap / compatible printing ?

HP have larger ink sizes, but expensive.
Epsom compatibles for cheap buy bulk INK

cheapest Toner ? dunno.

I feel funny asking this on an Amiga forum, but what's an ADF?

I have a Brother MFC-9840CDW and it works great with my AmigaOne as well as Windows
and Linux. It works with OS4 both over USB and via network with a small program from OS4depot.

I might be biased from the fact that I work here as a programmer, but I'd recommend a Konica Minolta device. We're not the cheapest by any stretch (actually, we're pretty expensive I believe), but we definitely have excellent PS and PCL compatibility (conforming to standards as much as possible and with well documented extensions where the standards don't meet all our capabilities), while also having a very nice range of extra network features that you can make good use of that all work with standards rather than proprietary protocols (just for example: scanning over FTP or SMTP; or ability to send a fax as a normal print job with just a modification to the print data stream rather than being a totally different protocol).

That said, I'd also suggest waiting just a couple of months and then buying the new toy we'll be releasing soon... not allowed to talk about it before release, but I CAN say it'll be worth waiting for, and will definitely be nicely compatible with your Amiga (including some of the more advanced functions that I can pretty much guarantee everyone else will have Windows (and maybe MacOS X) only custom software for).

Mostly by the way, I don't work with our home or small office "all in one" devices - my main focus is on our larger free-standing office machines, however the main reason I advocate waiting for the next home/SOHO model is that it is much more closely related to the bigger toys that I play with.

@wisementrading.com

Thanks for that hint, how can you realize scanning from AOS 4.1 ?

Can you access the Scan to USB function from Amiga (therefore see the USB Stick plugged into your printer from your Amiga as massstorage device) ? Or use scan to ftp ?

Can scanning done from Linux with SANE or do you use another programm/driver ?

@yttriumox

I checked Konica Minolta as well, and, yes expensive... At the moment I am more tending towards sub 500¤. But not defenitively not more than a 1000¤. IS THAT A PRICE RANGE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ???

What do you mean by Amiga compatible... just printing... or scanning as well... via workaround (scan to ftp) or an own AOS Device GUI ??

Thanx for infos

@yoodoo2

Just thinking, I am not that much of a technical guy. But those laserprinters are using similar processors as the SAM has, don't they ? So would it be possible to have printer with a SAM board running some sort of Amiga OS for operating the printer ? This is embedded isn't it.

Some of the decent workhorse printers have faster PPC processors, more memory, USB 2 etc. In many ways they are better specced than the Sam!

@all

Seems, that it is more a question wether the scanner is supported. I am waiting for an answer from Brother wether scanning is supported via Linux (on the MFC-9450CDN).
Epson is supported via Linux... is scanning also supported on AOS4.1 ?

I open a new thread for that...

Thanks for you advice, maybe someone can contribute to my other thread..

greetings

@gerograph

Ok, here is my result:

I will buy a Brother 9450 CDN, reasons:

1. Got postscript -> usable on Amiga
2. fully Linux compatible

Brother officially supports Linuxdrivers, for this one you have to use the 9840CDW Linuxdrivers - Fax, SANA-Scandriver, CUPS-Printdriver/system which are available at http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/download_scn.html

3. has Scan-To-FTP Option,

which other printers in that pricerange (around 500¤) donnot offer, especially the Epson CXN21. This enables me to setup a FTP Server on my Amiga, and scan via "Workaround"

4. SANA Scandrivers
Even though I donnot know, wether the stated SANA Drivers are open source or not, I might see a little chance that those drivers get ported to AOS4/SCANdal.
As far as I understood, there are already Epson drivers out there for Betascan/SCANdal but I think they are outdated and quoting Epson donnot work with All-In-One because of technology reasons. So I am not sure wether it is more likeable that the Epson thing gets ported to OS4 or the brother drivers....

--> SOLVED
