| Hello,
i'm curious and eager to know what we could find in the update 3? I hope for some graphics speed up and other improvements. Does anyone know something about the release date?
Regards AB

I bet when they have fixed a stable version for SAM 460 it will be called 4.1.3 and it will of course be released for other AmigaNG machines too. Compositing support for more graphics cards will be included of course. Maybe it is too optimistic to expect USB 2.0 support.
If so much time and effort wasn't put into AmigaOS 4.1 for Classic I bet we would be looking at a big overhaul with the next update including USB 2.0, Gallium and much more. It would probably be called AmigaOS 4.2 then.

We have 4.1, so the next should be 4.2, no?
Anyway, not that important.

Yep, no one know the real timeline, so ask is useless i think, then "when it's done" is the real answer :-/ Last edited by samo79 on 19-Feb-2011 at 05:10 PM.

| I wonder if they'll be any trickle down/up of anything added to the OS4.1 Classic release?
And of course there's the version for the X1000...

Well...
nobody prohibits OS4 team members to post here giving us some hints (uhm.. rants and complains apart). I mean hints, just to have an idea of the works going on.

Well having some more info would be nice for sure but in general our devs are always a bit silent regarding OS info and timeline, this is the reason why i use that emoticon.
BTW i believe that many components are already done/up-to-date but IMHO the next update will be out only with Mesa/Gallium, so ...

I remember it being mentioned back around the time of AmiWest that AmigaOS 4.1 Classic is mainly the result of some of the developers backporting OS4.1 features to OS4.0 Classic in their own time. Hyperion have decided to commercialise it, but I doubt its holding back progress in other areas much.
Anyway, I should imagine that AmigaOS 4.1 update 3 will bring the platforms back to feature parity (except possibly 4.1 Classic, depending on how much performance gain things like ZorRAM and the use of Radeon cards gives) before a new AmigaOS 4.2 is released. Hopefully with multicore support.
That's my forecast, anyway.

Ok guys, about OS 4.1 Classic. It is not holding anything up or delaying anything else.
Developments for the platforms (except for low level driver stuff) is the same, so if someone, for example, were to release a new intuition.library, it would work on all platforms.
Yes, drivers take time and there has been some time allocated for OS 4.1 Classic, (and also for Sam 460), but I just want to "put to bed" the speculation that OS 4.1 Classic is delaying things.
Most of the time things are worked on in parallel.

| I think some people don't realise what a "release" entails. Remember that the development process is a continuing one, new versions of various components are released every day or so.
Committing to a new release is not a decision that we take lightly. From the moment that the decision is taken, it might be four to six weeks before the ISO is ready for release.
A new release means "taking a snapshot" of the system status at some point in time, collecting all the components that are current at that moment, building them into an ISO and testing it. Since development continues at the same time, there are inevitably some components that are not ready for release in their current form (eg as USB 2.0 was with Updates 1 and 2). So, suppose we decided that we would make a new "Release 17" at the end of September (say), we would decide to release the system as it was at the end of August (perhaps) and make the ISO from the components at that time. Of course, some of them would be not suitable, so we'd have to go back to earlier, more stable versions (or leave them out altogether).
Someone then has to take charge of the system build that contains all the "Release 17" candidates, keep them insulated from the normal day-to-day updates and look after the generation, installation and testing of the ISO. The beta team has to keep the new ISO on a separate partition, NOT install any daily updates to it, but test the installation as far as they can.
Meanwhile, some developers have updated their components to fix bugs that were present in the "Release 17" ISO. Do we update the components in Release 17, even though the new versions have only been out for a week? Usually we say no, keep it safe, go with the older, known version.
The Classic ISO that Darren is working on is in the midst of all this. It is a snapshot of the system at the same level of development as Update 2 for the other platforms. Except that there are new drivers that support some Classic hardware, some components that have been bug-fixed, etc, etc. I haven't met Darren, but I'll bet he has less hair than he had this time last year.

Mesa/Gallium would be nice.
Meanwhile i read somewhere and had a talk with m3x about some improvments in the graphics library by using the DMA channel for getting better result in accessing video ram read/write. How many DMA channel are avaiable and used in current SAM/a1 and PEG 2?
