ok. i know i'm a total noob, but, how do you install this thing? grabbing the latest version of kingCON from aminet gives me a 'handler' and a readme file that has no useful instructions.

presumably there is some magic to startup-sequence i need to perform?

@eliyahu

You need grab kingcon1.3 from aminet , and kingcon1.8 update from amikit site. You then just install 1.3 fully (it have installation script), and later replace handler from amigakit's update.

It depends on what you are going to do. I for example did *not* replace the original CON: but have defined a additional KCON: which can be used for shell operations. Put the handler into L:, fire up Notepad and paste this:

Handler = L:KingCON-handler
StackSize = 32768
Priority = 5
GlobVec = -1

...into it, save it as "KCON" into DEVS:Dosdrivers, add an icon (i.e. make a copy of an existing DOSDRIVERs icon, for example PIPE). After that go to SYS:System, make a copy of "Shell" (for example as "KCON-Shell"), open the information requester of this new icon with wb's "icon information" menu and alter the tooltype "WINDOW=CON:90/..." to "WINDOW=KCON:/...". Reboot. Voila. Double clicking KCON-Shell should open a shell with KCON: as handler. The KCON: can be used everywhere (i.e. with DOpus).

Real man don't use installation scripts. But you are right, I totally forgot that the old version from Aminet had an install script...

@kas1e

sweet. i went ahead and also replaced the reference to CON: and RAW: in user-startup. this is rather nice.

@tonyw

still eagerly awaiting the updated console and will pull kingCON out before installation of whatever update with which it happens to ship.

i hope there aren't any performance implications with using kingCON rather than the native console-handler in the interim; i mean, with it being an emulated 68K device and all.

There are none & you won't like going back to the old shell either.

As Sundown said, there are no performance problems using KingCon. The KCON: handler doesn't do much work really, most of it is in the display formatting, which is within the (native) console.device.

Personnaly since I experienced grave lockups/problems with KCON (was it under pre 2 or pre 3, I don't remember) I switched back to the plain Shell and never ever exeperienced any problem since then.

Maybe the fault was in the native console of that time I don't know, anyway I rely most in native still maintained piece of software than in an unmaintained one for 10 years...

OS4 has evolved quite a bit since then, I've never had it lock up & been using it for a few years now, you should give it another try.

I'll have to look at my installation again, when I close a KingCON window it always brings up the Grim Reaper.

Off-topic: I wonder if I have something badily installed in WBStartup, 9 times out of 10 when I do a soft-reboot Workbench freezes and I have to do a hard-reset to get it working! :(

Also how I am supposed to install AmiUpdate in WBStartup, whenever I do it pops up saying - "can't connect, do you want to wait longer?".. so I click Yes, and just keeps repeating that. If I answer No the Workbench pops up, if I then manually fire up AmiUpdate it usually connects straightaway. Yes I've tried unticking "Wait until finished" in the tooltypes interface it does nothing... I've also got DONOTWAIT in the tooltypes.

I had almost the complete opposite experience... many years ago.
I use VincEd exclusively. It matchs fairly closely to my unix tcsh experience at work.

I cannot recall the significant differences in VincEd and KCon.

Do you know of an article that is a comparison of those 2?

Not a good idea to start any web apps from WBStartup as it takes a few seconds to connect to your ISP. You could set the start priority lower then all the other entries & see if that helps.

No, I don't know of any independent articles. However, reading the docs for ViNCed, the author goes out of his way to explain that ViNCed is nothing like KingCon, but is primarily a screen editor, rather than a line-by-line command interpreter.

ViNCed is sort of like a C64 screen editor, where you can move the cursor anywhere on the screen, editing whichever line the cursor is on. If you like that sort of thing, it's probably great.

ViNCed and KingCon are installed and run using the same method - install one of them instead of the system con-handler. You could of course install both and use two console windows, one with KK, one with VNC, but not together.

In principle, you could mount CON:, KCON: and VNC: and start a console using any of the three.

I seriously doubt that will help any.

Best solution IMHO is to use a Network-Startup script that runs AmiUpdate.

This is what my S:Network-Startup looks like ATM:
Quote:

C:AddNetInterface QUIET DEVS:NetInterfaces/~(#?.info)

C:Date SERVER pool.ntp.org

C:WBRun Work:Apps/AmiUpdate/AmiUpdate

Then add the following lines to S:Startup-Sequence (replacing the existing AddNetInterface command):
Quote:

If EXISTS S:Network-Startup
Run >NIL: *>NIL: Execute S:Network-Startup
Else
Run >NIL: *>NIL: C:AddNetInterface QUIET DEVS:NetInterfaces/~(#?.info)
EndIf

Could depend how it is installed. And if you replace CON with KCON. What I did was keep the system CON untampered. I prefer it that way, to have a clean as system as possble when using additions like these. I have KCON and KRAW mounted, but I only set the Shell icon to use KCON. My system has been KCON stable for many years of updates.
