Hy guys,

i need some advice.
I don't know why but i have the inner feel to get an old A600 and pimp it to the max.

Now what is the max?

I like this design (well it is a A1200)

Now the questions:
What could i buy to max out performance and functionality?

1. ACA 630... is there the 64MB edition available?
2. Indivision ECS
3. A604
4. CF card as HD
5. Subway
6. 16bit PCMCIA Wifi-card

hmmm... did i miss something?

PS: oh oh i have posted this as news : D
bad habit

Wow thats one of the coolest a1200s i've ever seen! Who's is it??

As far as your list of a600 upgrades looks like you covered it,except for 3.1 rom! or a rom switcher maybe?

Very nice! I have an ACA 630/25 Stealth board, its at Amigakit now with a few of my A600's as the first machine I tried it in (early rev. motherboard) it didn't work. Will be getting it back when the guys are back from AmiWest.

hi,

the A1200 isn't mine. I have seen this via LemonAmiga's Facebook page. It blows my mind ; )

I would like to play MP3 with the A600 but ACA630 isn't capable. Has anyone used the MAS-player in the past?

EDIT:
Painting was done with spray. The guy (not sure if i am allowed to tell his name?!) has bought white keyboard-stikers via Ebay.

Its a shame the board didn't come with a 68882 but you can't have everything I guess.

I've never bought the Amiga keyboard stickers but I have bought the one's for the C64 and VIC 20 that are sold on eBay, for anyone doing a project like this you should buy them from the seller in America as the ones he sells are of a very high quality compared to some of the others I've bought on eBay...

I've only ever sprayed an old A1500 keyboard (silver) but forgot to coat it with lacquer, which is a must, cos if you don't after a few months of use the paint wears off and you're left with a rather patchy looking keyboard...

(Re-Spray keyboard properly- a project for next springtime I reckon)...

@phoenixkonsole

I use a MAS player all the time in my A1200-based MP3 jukebox. I have an 030/50 in it and custom software, but it did work quite well with an 020/28 accelerator in there too, so the ACA630 on your 600 should be plenty as well... I'm not sure the MAS player is still available though (or, at least on the parallel port version)...

@Daedalus
Found a MAS-player : )

Next thing i am thinking about is the browser problem for 68k.

Aweb, ibrowse seem to be outdated. Netsurf seems to rely on SDL and needs a gfx card.

So i am thinking about a way to "convert" a webpage to something my Amiga could show.

Well the 100% accurate way would be a PDF with hyperlinks. A click on the hyperlink would tell my server to convert the page behind this link and send it to the Amiga.

Well... PDF seems problematic too : )
How good is Ghostcript on classics?
If it would support Hyperlinks we could use this work around to get modern pages back to classics.

Something like Opera's service for mobilephones which compresses websites and images.

@phoenixkonsole

Excellent

-Edit- I was going to see if you wanted to try out my MAS player MP3 software, but I forgot that it won't run without an FPU I'm afraid. Not that it really needs it, it's just a quirk of the AmiBlitz code unfortunately...

As for browsers, you're basically out of luck. I think Ghostscript was reasonable last time I used it on 68k, but that was a long time ago and I don't know if it supported hyperlinks. Either way it'll be pretty slow - perhaps you'd be better off just sticking to stuff like IRC, FTP and Email, since they haven't changed much in 20 years and the Amiga can still hold its own there.

@phoenixkonsole

I have a A600HD.
I consider (in priority order):
- PCMCIA ethernet
- A604 Memory Expansion
- ACA 630/25 Stealth Accelerator
- PC-Key 600 Keyboard Adapter
- 4GB CF IDE HARD DISK (or TrueIDE etc...)
- Indivision ECS Scandoubler
- SUBWAY USB CONTROLLER

All available from Amigakit, it seems...

@phoenixkonsole

The original 1200 could be my favorite computer design. I like the original white. I'm not sure about the red color.

IBrowse on the A600 does a fine job of browsing the Amiga forums. I'm working on a links page full of sites that work in IBrowse and AWeb, Amiga.org has a proxy that strips the CSS out and reformats the site in a way IBrowse can display it, and if worst comes to worst you can always use VNC to browse the web from another computer on a screen or in a window on the A600.

Here's how AmigaWorld looks on my A600 (with ACA630, A603, Subway, PCMCIA Ethernet, CF drive):

That doesn't look too bad. Is it 16 or 32 colours?

@_Steve_

16 colours, the most the A600 can show in these resolutions, but it's nice and responsive. With an IndivisionECS installed you can take advantage of the new fast 800x600 driver from Ratte, which also runs in 16 colours! Remember than "Super72" only ran in 4 colours on ECS machines, and it's very slow. This new mode would be the best, I just wish I had an Indivision ECS to run in through.

Oh by the way, Dynamite runs very well on my A600 setup too, so it's a great little system for that multiplayer online game.

Oh yeah, and although I'd normally recommend an A600 user to upgrade to Kickstart 3.1 ROMs, with the ACA630 it's not necessary, the 3.1 image (even a patched image with new scsi.device) can be loaded into the accelerator's RAM and used, even if the Amiga still has a Kickstart 2.x ROM.

@Cammy
Thanks.
Well the question now is if Jens will offer a ACA631 soon...
http://www.vesalia.de/e_aca1231-42.htm

Whatever i can't wait : )

I found this video about VNC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gC-7sC0Fi4

Would reducing the WIndows resolution help to improve speed?

@phoenixkonsole

Yeah, it does improve the speed if the other OS is running in a lower resolution, although I think the way the compression works is that it only sends the changed area, so even in a higher resolution as long as not much is moving on the screen it is pretty quick. For example leaving a page open with an animated gif running since it only sends through the changes, not the entire screen in every frame, it's still quick enough to use.

I put my Linux PC in 1280x720 and control it from my A1200 on a HD720 screen, thanks to the Indivision, and it's just like running another OS on another screen, just like running MacOS through Shapeshifter at the same time as Workbench.

One time I had Workbench, MacOS, Ubuntu and Kubuntu all on their own screens (Intuition screens, not monitors), it was pretty cool being able to drag them all down to reveal four on screen at once. I should take a photo or a video demo.

Anyway, for running VNC on the A600 I put the PC in 640x480 mode, and I use a configuration that has smaller fonts so it fits on screen better. And then I set Opera to display websites at 60% size, and they fit the width of the screen and look alright on the A600 then.
