First Contact AmigaOne X1000 question

Since asking in a news thread is futile, I'll start a new thread.

@TrevorDick

Can you tell us what is special about this "First Contact" edition?

- Do we get anything extra special with this release?

- Or will we be missing something (that can't be upgradable) with this release (such as not getting the final case design)? Or "only" 1.8GHz CPU instead of 2GHz or something like that?

I want to buy the X1000 as soon as possible but I would not like to receive an "SE" variant while those who wait will get the "XE" variant, if you see my analogy

I understand the OS will not be OS4.2 (but include a license) and possibly lacking drivers but that can be upgraded later so it doesn't matter at all.

@Deniil715

I think 1.8Ghz is used to be "on the safe side".
After decent power management is implemented, 2Ghz might become recommended.

Jus MHO, as ususal.

Have a look at this video.

Around 24:00, Trevor is talking specifically about the "First contact" limited edition. This might give you some clues.

@polka.

The x1000 used in the video is not at First Encounter specification though.

I was obiously talking about the content of the presentation, not the computer _used_ to do the presentation.

@ddni

I expect it probably is First Contact spec, the only difference being more RAM and possibly a larget hard disk.

I think what Trevor was saying at Amiwest was that the anounced price was for a base specification but when ordering you could specify more RAM and a bigger hard disk (maybe a different video card) so I think what would make it First Contact spec would be having a network card and sound card as PCI cards and shipping with OS4.1 update 4. This is based on trying to understand what was said when it wasn't said in a very clear way so I could be wrong but it makes sense.

I also think he implied that First Contact was in a similar vain to the Early Bird systems in that you have to accept a few temporary compromises to get your system earlier but at least this one comes with AmigaOS and you will only have to wait a short while to get to use the onboard NIC and sound. So not really like the earlybird systems at all because the hardware works and you won't be stuck running Linux for years

I think I'm giving away the fact that I have been hanging around for longer than my 2006 join date implies

i'll leave to trevor and/or matthew to answer your query, but i wouldn't worry about the clockspeed of the PA6T included in any of the editions. it is very easy to change the refclock frequency and multiplier(s) on the PA6T, and once i get one, i'll be happy to help anyone who wants to do that.

you should have full function when you get the system. the (currently) unfinished drivers include the ethernet driver using the PA6T's on-die PHY and the SATA interfaces on the SB600. so amigakit is including an ethernet card and SATA card just to be on the safe side, both of which have chipsets supported by current drivers.

at least that's what i understand to be the case based on my recollections from amiwest. just email amigakit and they should be able to fill in the blanks. and, yes, it really is as fast as you imagine. i can hardly wait.

@eliyahu

Thanks for clarifing that for everyone (and for your help with the slide show presentation).

The "First Conatct" system will be supplied with an Ethernet & Sound card just in case the onboard drivers are not available at the time of delivery.

However, the info in the press release is fairly straight forward and I think should answer most questions. AmigaKit will setup a special X1000 configurator to allow people to configure their system. (e.g. additional RAM, HDD size etc etc).

@all

Thankyou very much for your answers.

Maybe I can use my old SB Audigy (that wouldn't play nicely with A1/VIA686b) in my X1000 until onboard audio works to safe a few lousy €s.

@TrevorDick
@amigakit
@or who ever...

a few little question

When will pre-order page go online?
Wil it be possible to cancel the pre-order if their is a delay or unforeseen problems?
Will the money be taken stright away or only at shipping? (i do trust Amigakit, honest :) )
AmigaONE White Keyboards?
Backplates for Nemo Motherboard?
Come with all cables right? PSU, Ethernet cable?
Xmos, not much talk of this, still in development? Accessible in Os4 or Linux?
Users Guide / Manual ? (even if small or just on the computer)
Shipped in what Box? Custom Printed Box, Factual Box, or just well package box.
Debian Squeeze, hardware wise everything work on this right? is this standard or this an added extra on the system?
How limited are the X1000 First Contacts?
Boing Ball Case will that still be available to buy on its own, and if so when and how much?
Do you gain access to the Beta Forum and latest Patch releases with the X1000?
Any other software to be shipped with the X1000? Timberwolf? Would be nice to do a tie in offer, maybe get Freespace 2 cheaper if ordered with X1000 or Hollywood or something like that.
Full warranty for one year? Correct?
And finally thanks for living the Dream!

Hope its a success and I'm on the edge of getting one, but it is a lot of money and just like to be certain of a few things first, can you blame me.

Good Luck.

@TrevorDick

It wasn't clear about OS4. It said OS4 was pre-installed but later on said the price excluded the OS4 license. Despute it saying that it was a complete system. So there I got lost.

The First Contact of AmigaOS4 on the X1000 and it's stuck in limbo? Users don't want an OS that's in purgatory!

Also I think it was a bit premature as there was no sign of this X1000 on the AmigaKit site. And nothing in the news. Has this been amended now?

based on the press release trevor referenced, and presentations at amiwest, the OS4 license is extra. however consider this: you'd have to pay for the OS anyway, whether it was bundled in the final price or otherwise, and with the 'first contact' configuration you can start using the X1000 right away using OS4.1u5 and get the upgrade to OS4.2 for no charge.

so just think of it like this: you're getting at least one version of OS4 for free.

@Hypex

a) Its the price policy: its more then everyone expect. To show that it is about as announce A-Eon (Trevor) states the price of the system (if I get it correctly) WITHOUT VAT and AmigaOS 4 (which is +18% + 105 euros for OS4). Probaby not to push the price even harder, its stripped to 1GB RAM and 500GB HDD. At the other hand, that is the price of the system withot taxes and OS4 (what A-EON charges). You will be able to pick larger HDD, better Gfx, 2GB RAM etc. from Amikit from some extra cash if you want, to get the "machine you have seen during presentation"

b) You will get AmigaOS4 but latest OS 4.1 update 4 and some later unneeded hardware (PCI Sound card and PCI SATA card) because current OS4.1u4 doesn`t support the onboard card and SATA

c) You will be first to download and test AmigaOS 4.2 when its done, when it will fully support all onboard stuff, RadeonHD etc. because you have actually paid for it.

So in earlybird version you get 2 more PCI cards and extra AmigaOS 4.1 with a bit higher price of just the cards. So final X1000 will have OS 4.2, no cards in PCI slots and probably 2GB RAM.

Yes, its complete system, just the price was a bit hidden

@vox

I would like confirmation that after the First Contact boards are sold, the mainstream NEMO boards wont suddenly be Rev. NEMO 2.2

Also are the First Contact boards NEW unused or are some of them returned test boards that the beta testers did not want?
