It's very easy to critisize and complain about bugs and missing features, but people instantly forget about new features and forget to give the developers much credit for thier work, especially since many of them aren't even payed. One simply takes it for granted.

I am unfortunately no exeption. I remember how nice it was to get stable USB and 2.0 speed, but didn't mention it (much).

This time I just noticed a very smart feature in the intuition popup menu system: The system remembers the last menu item you used and will always place a popup menu (the intuition popup menu, not the Commodity/ContextMenus one) such that your last selection will come closest to the mouse pointer everytime.

I don't know how long this has been there, but it's a nice feature. Thanks

@Deniil715

Totally agree, they do not get the recognition they deserve.

@Deniil715

Human nature I suppose. People tend to complain about the 1% that is bad and not say anything about the 99% that is good.

I'd also like to say a big "Thank You" to the developers - not just for the OS but all the other Amiga programs I use too!

Yep I can agree, developers in general always hear about bugs (and feature requests) 90% of the time.

Worse when the criticisms come from people who have not used the software in question (and may have only seen a youtube video of it at best).

One of the beat features which you never hear about is the POSIX compatibility. It's easier than ever before to port stuff to the Amiga.
Still think it's the best OS I've ever used.

Big thanks from me, too! I just got an AmigaOne 500 and without the guys at Hyperion and Acube it would just be a very expensive doorstop! I know they're spread pretty thin right now. There's the X1000, SAM 460, and the (top secret) netbook. Plus continuing support for older computers.

since this is apparently a commercial product i think the praise amounts to buying it. if there is not enough customers it might tell something about the product.

@Deniil715

I totally agree! A big cheer for the Amiga OS4 developers! Hurray!

I remember when I first got my AmigaOne about, was it 7 years ago now? Wow! Anyway, I expected that nothing from my old 68k Amiga would work on it, I thought going PowerPC meant that everything would have to be new. I expected something as limited as BeOs with respect to application and game availability. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised!
My AmigaOne behaved like a massively hyper fast A1200 with gobs of memory and hard drive space! I dumped all my A1200 software onto a tiny partition on my AmigaOne and was amazed to see that the old OS3 icons worked, that workbench was the same old workbench I knew and loved, with lots of little improvements, and that the system was far more stable than people seemed to indicate from the various Amiga forums.
As I look back I am so glad that I decided to get an AmigaOne and continue to support Hyperion and other developers financially as they come out with new releases!

I am looking forward to even more wonderful and exciting stuff in the future!

Scott

Yes!

We all know how much work still has to be done, but let's also be thankful and give thanks for all the work that has been done. Much has been accomplished with software and hardware.

Now, get back to work!

@Deniil715,

Agree, more going on now than for at least 6 years. Momentum is kicking in and is very welcome.

@Deniil715

I've been good at complaining too but I have to give the AOS 4 developers a big thank you! Latest version is very stable and very nice to use and I have to admit that I love it.

@hotrod

my X1000/OS4.1.5 feels really stable and as always im greatfull for every update and all work they did. Complaining is a natural thing too, i mean i complained on the long wait on usb2 and buggy crossdos but now everything is good in that area :)

I have high respect towards our community's developers! Thank you all!

And please be civil also towards wannabe developers (like myself), we need more people doing productive stuff on Amigalike platforms.

I hope one day more people can have some income from Amiga doings or that they can at least use their favourite systems for (other) work stuff.

I remeber when computing was more fun than today. Amigalike OS are mandatory for me to be able to get to the fun-having mode also in the future.

Our future is in our hands and especially on the hands of the developers. The community (every person + soul) is responsible for this niche's success.

I am not going to praise anybody for USB 2.0 support that was delivered over a decade since its official launch. Thankfully most people shared my point of view and didn't started shading tears of joy like typical cheerleaders. It takes thousands of euros to enter the ng amiga market, it isn't a charity. Still I do understand that some people develop their work for free because it's a hobby for them and as such I can't understand why anyone would need to get praised in order to continue his doing hobby, especially if the outcomes of his projects do not deserve it.

Actually, I'd say worst are the people who haven't used the software (as you said) but base their criticism on assumptions on how they think the software is.

I remember on amiga.org some user commenting how OWB (MorphOS version) is "better than nothing" but "based on older version of webkit" and "not being very standards-compliant"

Of course he was quickly pointed out that OWB actually uses WAY more recent webkit than probably any other browser around, and that even with webgl disabled, it scores way better than Firefox in compliance tests.

Also have seen lots of posts complaining about "lack of proper movie player" - mostly seems to be coming from people who have used only VLC on windows, and assume that mplayer must be much worse (as it's much less used on windows). And of course, not even bother to check if there's VLC available (it is, at least for MorphOS)

I have also seen claims that "mplayer cannot do streaming" (it can, but VLC might be better in that), and "VLC supports more codecs" (the codec-related code is exactly same, shared between the two projects)

While I do agree that VLC might have some things mplayer doesn't, mplayer still is "more than enough" for most users.

And in this regards the opposite is true as well: If they should not praise, you shall not criticise.

No, it doesn't.
