I could do the same thing with a xmos starkit (12$) than with an arduino (20$), the processing power is far more important.
Only pb with xmos chip, is that the community is really small compared to PI or arduino one, so it lacks a lot of 'slidecards', or "capes" or even docs.
I wish I could havve a beaglebone black (seems a PI killer imho), although there is a worlwide outage of those devices, I am waiting mine since 4 moinths now. Apparently, BBB are going in revision c, with new ram because of cost issues.

It's all fun!
@DC_Edge
The problem with a xmos startkit is we have no, on Amiga, way to program them. Not even with PPC Linux. The beaglebone can be programed in C, Javascript, Python, or even with it's own onboard terminal program.
Once a 'standard' way of communicating and controlling the BBB with xena is devised then there should be no need to worry about xmos programming to do things. (except for those that love to dink around with that stuff. )
I have a BBB and another on order, but like you it may be awhile before they are in stock for shipping.
