AmigaOne XE-G4 L3 cache?

Do G4 CPUs in AmigaOne XE (7451 and 7455) have L3 cache? I think yes, as models without L3 cache are 7441 and 7445, but AmigaOne article on Wikipedia states otherwise. Anyone with G4 XE? I rather ask before removing that nonesense from article.

@pavlor

IIRC the L3 cache was external to the chip. I have seen a couple of G4 processors (I think) with some SIMMs soldered to the reverse side of the CPU daughter board. Most modules don't have them.

IIRC (again) the L3 cache was found to make no great improvement, so was not installed on later models of the CPU modules.

@tonyw

So there were modules with L3 and without L3? Then better to leave article as it is. Thanks for info!

Interesting stuff, you learn something new every day.

Any idea if I can find out which version I have without opening up the case and digging around again? I do know I have the motherboard without the onboard sound, so it'd be pretty likely I don't have the L3 as well, I guess.

@evilFrog

L3 should show eg. in Ranger, I think.

@thread

Yup, and I happen to have one.

To see what it looks like with the chips on the CPU module board, look at Hypex's avatar. The two big chips at the top of the board are the L3 cache chips.

I've had two A1 XE-G4 systems, the first one did not have those chips on it, and it had the 933 MHz 7455 CPU. This one with the L3 chips is the same CPU. I don't know that it makes that much difference in how everything runs on it, which is probably why not many have those chips installed. Might be like the on-board audio codec chip that they left off of later boards since they thought it would never work.

Oddly enough, the CPU command and Ranger do not show any L3 cache, even though it is there.

Yes, the L3 cache only uses 133MHz single data rate RAMs, even if the CPU's L3 interface could actually connect to DDR RAMs. Thus the L3 cache will only have the performance of the normal system memory - ok, maybe a little bit better, because the CPU doesn't have to go through the northbridge.

Caches Sizes: L1: 64 KB - L2: 2048 KB - L3: none
Cache Line: 64

@Severin

Hmm, even that says none. Now I wonder if it really is there and working? Next time I take it apart, I'll check it.
