@tlosm

it means you can make a screenshot of something. seems linux can even run it on your system without going in its knees, involving all necessary support like probably current instruction set support, 3d harware acceleration and multicore support. the game is not exactly state of the art, nor ever was, in short, nothing that wouldnt run twenty times better on a genuine x86 linux system today..

the question is, why.. the original doom was groundbreaking, even if not contentual. today and in past ten/twenty years there were many remarkable releases, well beyond a fairly linear game, with no open space to explore, with no side quests or walkthrough alternatives, where if you trigger an attack from the front, you can be sure two of them are coming from the back, luckily with almost not any ai, corresopondingly to the nature of these opponents.

somehow it feels like the sole availability of an open source software product to what a user considers his "amiga" choice, in your case linux on an aeon hardware, makes it remarkable enough.

Or... he simply likes Doom3.

My FPS game of choice is Heretic, which works even on my A1200.

heretic looked like a decent game twenty years ago, cannot say whether its good or not, as i never played it. however i bought doom3 on release just for the sake of it, and it was nothing but pure disappointment, that even if it sold, it was only due to the cult status of the series. if one is into something as simplictic and uninspired, fine. but i fail to see what does it technically proves, when it can be made run on some linux hardware today.

Heretic is Doom in fantasy setting with well-balanced colour palette and well designed levels. (end of advertisement ).

Doom3 is some sort of standard 3D benchmarks - even if it isn´t good game, it may be used for such purpose.

+1

Looks great.
Horrible game.

I think I still have the little die cast figure that came as a bonus for pre-ordering.

But then you gamers would have a better tack on this then me, I can't play any 'modern' games.
They all look great, but there hasn't been one that has fascinated me more than Galaga.

Doom 3

I have played this game right near the end of the game. I was in Hell, but could not defeat whatever it was, but I knew the only weak spot was on it's back, very hard to target this small spot on it's back.

This game is at it's scariest when played with high quality in-ear earphones, dual or triple drivers (my opinion).

Not sure if it applies to this version of the game, but it works on the pc version where you can enable FPS in the doom draw/base/ "doomconfig".

What about 4K Screenmode, is this possible?

Game benchmarks usually run pre-rcorded demo of some gameplay with goal to attain max FPS possible (eg. FPS limits are turned off as in case of "Doom").

Such application benchmarks are useable for comparison of different CPU/GFX card/drivers configurations.

@wawa

Doom 3 is rendered by id Tech 4 3D engine which is used in Quake 4, Prey, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Wolfenstein, and Brink .

'Carmack's reverse' was a mess... http://techreport.com/news/7113/creative-patents-carmack-reverse

Games using an open source id Tech 4 license
1. The Dark Mod (2013) began as effort to recreate Thief: The Dark Project within Doom 3. It became a standalone game once the Doom 3 source code was released.

2. Quadrilateral Cowboy (2016) – Blendo Games.
