@Trekiej

Nice list! To be more precise, some of those support 3D card, but it is not required (eg. software mode in Quake, Hexen 2 etc.).

@pavlor

Maybe PPC emulation will make it to Aros through FS-UAE or others.
If I buy Amiga Forever and ad PPC emulation with Win-UAE, do I need WarpOS to play ppc games?
The chip set is ocs, ecs, and aga.

For 3.x: of course. OS4 has built-in WarpOS wrapper (there may be other compatibility issues).

RTG is better choice for most WarpOS games.

@pavlor

I am guessing that RTG does not need to be 3D accelerated.

@Trekiej

So not necessarily by chipset but by third party 3d hardware and support APIs like Warp3d?

@OneTimer1

Thank you for your post. Yes when thinking of 3d it's easy to think of chunky to planar software renderer's or Warp3d hardware. But we also had REAL Amiga 3d games using the chipset to render the frames.

Obvious examples are using the blitter. Which look primitive now days as single colour polygons. But these are the building blocks. And the blitter was never updated to warp textures or 2d bitplane images onto other shapes.

There is also the copper. It's limited to horizontal 3d effects but it can do it hardware accelerated. I don't know how many games did this.

Although it's not a pure 3d game I'm going to cite Elfmania as an example. This used the copper to slide the floor across as a 3d graphic. One of my favorites.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwLGlt2F82M

I'm not aware of any advanced 3d Amiga games using all Amiga features to create a fast 3d action game. Unfortunately chunky converters got popular and the Amiga games scene lost it with chunky distorted graphics trying to turn the Amiga into a VGA PC. We didn't last long.

I got a bit disappointed no advanced games engines were made. Even today years down the track we have gone backwards to basic 2d games. I had this idea myself of how to create a fast action game using real Amiga 3d. I imagined a racing game where a copper set the sky background and rendered the road in 3d by setting horizontal and bitplane offsets for images. It would have been dual playfield. Clouds would have been moved across screen in 3d fashion using copper. Objects such as trees would been blitted on screen in correct perspective. They would have been pre-rendered across the screen and scaled in realtime before blitting so as to look natural in 3d and not like a common 2d image faked in most 3d games. Other images would be the same. Cars may have been rendered from chunky to planar for complexity reasons otherwise as rendered objects the same way. Shadows could be another story if not coppered on.

The engine would also extend to fight games. Which needed less rendered on screen. I imagine the same but 3d background images like walls would be pre-rendered across and blitted as they moved or image offsets to change images fast with low overhead . So perfect looking 3d walls could be scrolled across. Limitations would be on rotating objects like floors which may have needed too many images to do and so limited to horizontal movement only,

Pre-renders may be forbidden in demos but in games where the action needs to be fast and look the best as well I think they would be acceptable. Sure it uses precious chip ram but if you want an advanced game that is the cost. I'm sure there was an Amiga 3d engine in the works by Vulcan that used pre-remders to create a fast 3d world that could do 25 if not 50 FPS on an A500! But I can't find any info on it.

The chip sets seem to keep on amazing me.

Amiga chipset has no (regular) 3D acceleration (well, Copper allows some 3D effects for games like AB3D, but only in ultra low resolution). Some newer RTG cards support 3D: CyberVision 64/3D (slow and limited), CyberVisionPPC/BVision and of course PCI cards like Voodoo or Radeon. Many games have hardware and software 3D mode. Software mode would work even without 3D acceleration (slow even in lower screen resolutions), hardware mode needs 3D card and drivers (fast even in higher screen resolutions).

@Trekiej

Yes it does. That being said. I have another idea. 3d platform game.

I mean side scroller but with platforms and other scrolling layers moving in 3d perspectve. Main sprite would be easy enough if on one position on screen. Background should be easy enough but 3d platforms might incur extra CPU or need blitter.

Copper could also be used for palette effects and use sprites with colour cycling for effect.
