Taking a look at my father brand new Lenovo Moto G4 Plus with 16 GB of Flash ROM memory and only 9.5 GB free remaining for storage, with best part of applications that cannot be anymore moved on MicroSD cards in Android 6 and 7, makes me wonder how cool it will be an AmigaOS or MorphOS porting on mobile devices, capable to leave free almost 14 GB of ROM space (13 or 12 including Amiga Apps that are notorious for being compact) and running no resource consuming...

@Raffaele

Not going to happen Amiga OS has no security it would need a major rework to be useable as a mobile phone OS. Even the desktop os4.1 is weak when it comes to security its only safe now because hackers don't go after little system.

@g01df1sh

Obviously I intended modern updated versions of our Operating Systems with full security features, and not the actual ones, so please don't answer with common Amiga attitude "AmigaOS lacks of it"...

And perhaps working on a mobile Amiga interface as long as we have MUI and ReAction it will be quite trivial. Just we need new classes.

The hard work will be mainly in considering mobile devices do require a huge effort in drivers, so AmigaOS or MorphOS will run only on a limited number of phones and/or tablets, the only ones supported by manufacturers.

Since we're entering the world of fantasy here why not have it running on every device known to man. If adapted to phone use, neither OS would be recognisable.

@Rob

We are not fantasizing. We are just making hypoteses on alternative scenarios and I feel to affirm that AmigaOS will be sure lesser resource consuming than competitor Operating Systems.
And perhaps we are all long awaiting modern features such as Security System and Multiple Users on AmigaOS since five or ten years, in real life not in Fantasyland...

Sure other OS makers must wake every morning thanking their gods with their whole heart that their obscure powers granted Amiga is not their competitor in the Mobile Market in real life.

Also have the issue of porting to another CPu as I cant think of any mobile phones that use PPC. The speed at which Hyperion work at we might have it by 2050 lol

Now hope that Hyperion could make a port on another architeture before 2050 that's sure beyond any weird dream and crazy fantasy you may unleash...

@Rob
The Amiga users have long lived in a parallel reality.
We dream with fantastic computers and with resurrections of old good days even with to put our OS inside of machines including washing machines.
You can see that is the general rule these days in altmos all threads in altmos all Amiga forums.

@Templario

Well that's maybe how things works for most amigans dreamers... I just want cheap reasonable powerful PPC with an OS I can master, controlling it by myself and on which I can rely...

And that desire is a reasonable desire, it is feasable with actual technology and knowledge not a weird fantasy...

It is depending on Amiga companies situations waving like kid toy flags and not being stready productive (neither with a clear vision of the market), if my desires not materialize in reality, not my fault...

Where did you forget AROS ? Shouldn't AROS run already on mobile CPU's. And it having SMP and 64 bit memory it shouldn't be no-brainer to currently active developers to add memory protection into it ?

Mobile market is not who has the best OS or something. Even Jolla with their Sailfish OS have been near bankcrupt and being in debt restructuring and Sailfish can run Android software. Their owners and workers are former Nokia people. If Sailfish can't do it then how any hobby OS could do it without several rich investors and people having the necessary knowledge of this stuff already.

You also would have to rethink the whole GUI:

- how do you use pull down menus on a touch device?
- what about elements that will be too small to be touched using a finger ?
- what about drag & drop: again, this is not so common
- what about battery: Amiga is less resource hungry but runs at 100% everytime, I'm not sure there is throttle support, etc
- what about security?
- what about stability? These devices cannot be restarted because a bad app did something horrible
- what about HD videos? You need to be able to use hardware decoding, the cpu isn't capable of doing it, and this would drain the battery anyway

Well... Right...

In Shenzen, mainland China there is an enormous electronics market in which you can pay some young skilled people few tenth pounds, or dollars and they will assemble a brand new smartphone, with customs components, right in front of your eyes, mounting also Open Android flavors on it...

(there are plenty articles on internet about this Shenzen market, and even some videos on Youtube)

It will be cool if we could have a working Mobile Aros version to be mounted on self assembled phones...

Like on every mobile device by tapping on the element and kept it tapped for a long time with the finger...

it should be trivial with our class system of GUIs to implement an element that operates when kept active for a reasonable amount of time...

How could we call it? Timeclickingpressure.class...???

Quote:

Opera Mobile was the first to implement a tiny pop up window that enlarge elements that are too narrow and it is uncertain what to do if you choosen that area. Now this feature is present in Firefox mobile too...

Quote:

That's a reasonable question...

But I think you can do it as on tablets, where drag&drop now it is becoming more present... Like in dragging an element on a directory icon to move it into....

You should open a mini request menu that will ask you if to copy or move the first element into the second element one....

Quote:

- what about battery: Amiga is less resource hungry but runs at 100% everytime, I'm not sure there is throttle support, etc

This is another reasonable question again, but I feel Amiga running at 100% is way times lesser consuming than any Android, or Windows Mobile, or IOS, consuming IDLE cycles...

But sure again it should be trivial implementing auto-sleep of programs that are not activated by the user for a long time, and keep alive only the system support software....

Skipping over the whole eye-rolling nonsense of the opening post, let me just comment on this part:

Quote:

I live in Shanghai, I know Shenzhen very well and dealt with custom hardware contractors several times.
The above, is a gross oversimplification of reality.

Yes, you have access to any hardware component you can ever dream of.

No, no one will assemble hardware "right in front of your eyes".
It's not a vegetable street market with trained monkeys to serve you as you or those "articles" seem to suggest.

It's a mature marketplace where you strike deals with factories, expert engineering teams, discuss prototypes for months, and finally you place an order for at least 1000 pieces.
50 - 100,000 USD deals, not "a few tenths"

@resle

Obvioulsly it is so... Shenzen sure is not the bengodi realm...

But none prevents you to buy single components and you will find sure young electronics skilled people who will gladly assemble any unbranded new phone device...

At least we do not need personal self made consumer electronics in Shenzen...

it was just an example to show that we could rely on a large basis of manufacturers (even unofficiaial ones) for any viable AROS for mobile devices, if available...

Sure any AROS Mobile Device if existing should be produced in reasonable quantities under a contract of a value of thousand dollars with hardware manufacturers....

[EDIT]

By the way this video is very funny though

@Raffaele

I guess if our market was bigger, we just pay vendors to write drivers for the Amiga community. (They properly struggle bit with low levels of AmigaOS not being Linux)

(Maybe even get Chinese government rot kits included)

On which element? pull down menus are global to the screen/app, not specific to an element.

Contextual menus are another matter.
