Hi,

I decided to replace my Amiga 1200 Tower's main Hard Drive with an IDE SSD drive I found on Amazon. Yes, an IDE interfaced SSD. No more unpredictable SATA to IDE adapters that I have never had luck with plus it's a more direct way to attach this device to my A1200's Fast ATA M IV controller (or any Amiga IDE controller for that matter including the on-board one). I did purchase a 40 pin to 44 pin adapter so I could use the existing IDE cable connection from the older Hard Drive.

Installation was seamless and was setup just as easily as any of the SD or CF adapters I have used in the past.

The IDE SSD is 32 Gigs which for a Classic computer is almost space infinite. Some people may argue that using an SSD on an Amiga computer will shorten it's life span since there is no Trim support, etc. Well, Since the Amiga doesn't use a swap file and writing to the drives is not nearly as frequent as other PC's, there isn't too much to worry about.

Any way, onto some links...

32 GB IDE SSD

125 MB/s Read and 31 MB/s Write. Not amazing speeds but more than fast enough for the my 1993's tech Amiga 1200.

40 pin to 44 pin IDE Adapter

Like I said, installation and partitioning was a breeze. My Workbench boots in half the time and I have gained about 1 MB/s in SysInfo's Disk Speed tests.

I would definitely recommend this upgrade to any Amiga Classic User. Being an IDE interface you can use this on an Amiga 600, 2000 or 4000. It also has the usual Master or Slave jumpers.

@Drewlio77
Are these repackaged dom (disk on module) the specs are identical ,its not a bad thing i have been using DOM in my Amiga's for over 10 years without a single fail ,I use mainly 16 GB Dom's but even the 2 or 4 gig seem huge on a classic Amiga.

I use disk on module drives (DoM) very reliable and no cable required, they plug straight onto the ide header on the Amiga's motherboard. link.

@J'Bar

They maybe. Amazon has them up to the 128 Gigs plus faster ones. I came across one that can read and write up to 250 MB/s. Though for the Amiga Classics, this speed will never be realized. That is why I went for the cheaper model.

One advantage I like over the DoMs is the standard form factor. In my A1200 Tower I mounted the drive into the same location in my case using a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter bracket. It came with a 20cm cable as well.

@g01df1sh

They are OK. I personally haven't had issues with them. I believe the IDE SSDs handle writes better but I am not too sure. I doubt this is as much of an issue since the Classic Amiga OS doesn't write to the System drive that often.
