Os4 problem validating disk

Hi
Recently each time I boot my Sam460 with an ssd disk the boot hold at the wbstartup stuff loadings. I have to do ctrl A A or even a cold reboot and at this time I get a message to wait while the disk is validated.
The system boots now, but in low resolution. After a ctrlAA it boots regularly
Awaiting some suggestions on how to solve the problem.
File system installed? I have to check probably ffs. Anyway the one installed by default by the os.

Ps with my Sam the booting has been always quite problematic, in the past it was for the usb solved after one of previous updates

Thanks

@ilbarbax

DON'T USE FASTFILESYSTEM!!!!!

never reboot while disk is being written to.
validation is the same as filesystem repair.

Use SFS/02 or NGFS

(Sometimes hard drives can be broken and needs to be replaced.
if problem continues)

@ilbarbax

Make sure you have the WAITFORVALIDATE keyword on the
SetPatch command line, in your s:startup-sequence.

@ilbarbax

If you are using FastFileSystem ( FFS ) you should now do exactly what it told you:

WAIT WILE THE DISK IS VALIDATING

And this can take really long.

If you are lucky it will repair itself and you should try to switch to a different FS.

Are you running OS4.1 Update 2? Do you have Enhancer? I ask as it's needed for the following to work unless you are running OS4.1 Update 6.

I would recommend to check the boot volume with PartitionWizard. You my need to check and repair. Hopefully there are no major faults but if it keeps repeating there is an option to salvage it.

@NutsAboutAmiga

So what chu saying? FFS. Don't use FFS.

Unlike is popular I wouldn't be so quick to jump into a 64 bit file system. Except for disposable data, as there are no recovery tools. Given FFS is 32 bit, SFS/01 is fine for replacing that.

Thanks for your replies.
I checked and my dh0 is dos/07.
I'm running FE update2 without Enhancer but I have radeon driver, not the latest, I had to spend for the update that is not usefull for me not being a game player.
Regards

Ps today to boot I had to try 6 times the first boot it hang at the wb startup or docker loading, then next attempt it hang at the logo screen

Don't touch it if it's validating, don't switch it off. don't reset it, don't reboot, just let it alone.

I'm not an AOS4 expert, some versions require a FFS formatted drive as boot disk, if yours is one of those, make this partition as small as possible for faster validating and put you productive date (that's where you are writing) onto another partition.

Ask here what Filesystem AOS4 users with your version would recommend, consider to get an update for your system do something to get rid of FFS.

@ilbarbax

To use SFS or NGFS.

You might need to keep a separate partition for kickstart modules.
it’s loaded from first partition... this is because the OS4.1 bootloader do not support all the filesystems, so its limited to a few, FFS 100% supported, SFS is maybe supported, don’t remember, and perhaps not all versions of it.

BBOOT: kickstart modules (FFS/07)
DH0: OS (SFS/02)
DH1: WORK (SFS/02)

There should be two partitions on boot partition this where kickstart modules should be.

I do not think recoverable disks is important, I think, its important to take backups, a hard drive can fail, so put two in your computer, copy files that important to your backup disk (it can be as good as raid if do it often), it’s as good as raid, there was soft raid solution for AmigaOS4, but I have never used it.

One thing I recommend when doing this stuff, is buy a new disk, disconnect the old one, so you do not destroy it, or mess anything up. When buying new disk label the disk, so you remember what they are for, and what they contain, and put a date on it.

@Hypex

What do you do if your disk breaks?

@ilbarbax

if you have a old PATA / ATA connector, you can get a IDE 2 SATA adapter.

https://www.dustin.no/product/5011176108/40-pin-ide-pata-to-sata-adapter-converter

It does not help with transfer speeds, but it does reduces seek time to 0, it does help on Amiga OS where we have lots of small files.

Ok. One thing you could do. Boot into the early startup menu and boot into a shell. It will then validate in the background. You can then check with the Info command the status of the system volume.

Another, if you have a OS4.1 CD, you can boot it to run PartitionWizard. This would be best if you need to repair it in case validation fails. Since the system volume would need unmounting, which would pull the rug from beneath your feet, if you had booted from it.

@NutsAboutAmiga

It's broken before. I'd grab a bootable OS4 CD. And a replacement drive. Then salvage as much possible.
