There are many people here telling us that they have problems. It's this or that and some are so frustrated they are actually overweighing to sell their AmigaOne. And there is nothing wrong with this, it's just that these problems is the only thing we hear.

It's very easy to get the impression that the OS4-update does nothing but malfunction, but this is not true (for most of us).

I just wanted to say that for me, and I would guess for most of us really, the AmigaOS4 prerelease update works just great! I followed the instructions very well, updating the SLB and the WBStartUp-programs and all went beautifully well

The network works, the sound works and it's very stable. I have an A1-XE G4(7455PC)/933MHz, Radeon 7k, SB Audigy2.

This is not an attempt to redicule people whop have problems, just to even out the negative with some positive

Of course there are still 'issues' but that's simply because it's still a beta.

Mine is running 24/7 crunching rc5-72 keys. I'm a bit busy atm so I can't spend that much time with the computer so it might as well crunch away.

Well anyways it's always on when I come home.

Most things works great here too! It's a very nice update adding nice features and speeeeeeeeed. This is the AOS 4 that I've been waiting for and it's not final.

Sure there are bugs left like the not freeing memory but other than that it is very stable. I don't know why people have problems and since the machines are the same it is hard to tell. Maybe a lack of cooling or faulty RAM or whatever.

Anyway... I'm very pleased with AOS 4!

Actually, he boo booed the update at the show ( Went and re-installed the ORIGINAL Os4 Pre release) ... But came round my place next day and did it for real

The Uboot Update obviously went without hitch !!


The speed increase is incredible.

Had to mess about with AHI, but got that sorted no probs.
Only problem I have is My seperate Linux drive which is set to Primary MASTER (Os4 is Primary SLAVE) Falls over with a kernal Panic.

I assume this is because We just moved the primary connector from the onboard to the Sil card and the Linux drive is not now where Debian expects it to be.

Might pull the connector out and plug a spare lead into MoBo IDE just to see if that fixes it

I`m pretty sure all my problems with the update are due to the poor cooling on my G3. AT first the update was totally unusable for me it locked up within seconds, but since reducing the voltage to the CPU I only get lockups when the systems stressed. I am shortly going to fit the Zalman cooling system.

It is kind of odd that when were all using pretty much the same hardware we still get huge differnces between machines.

Unlike a lot of people I had no issues at all with the original pre-release, then when I got the update it went completely the other way.

Anyway, i`m pretty sure i`ve got the solution now.

My AmigaOne works quite well, runs 24/7 crunching keys, hopefully they are sent to the proper place.

read about a few others that updated OS40 before me, I installed it my self, first I brunt the update CD, installed SLB and then updated the firmware, after this I the installed AmigaOS40 update, every thing turned out like planed, I hope every one have managed to update OS40 now, as it quite a joy compared whit last version,

now one can even play some classic AmigaOS games, like Earth2140_demo and PayBackDemo,

I find the update much more stable and useable i have used my machine more since the update than i have since i got it about two years ago.

Hello I would like to say despite of the little error popping up when doing something to the subdocks, the GrimReaper makes a report, but it's easily possible to ignore it and nothing more happens then, until the next time you boot, then the problem still is there, still with the same possibility..

I agree that despite some of the minor issues, this beta kick asses! it's pretty fast, very smooth and the most stable at date! I am very impressed and it's getting better all the time. When the final version is ready, it will be as close to perfection as possible...

amen to that! infact I think i have used my classic amiga
like 20 mins max since the os4 update. os4 is great!

to all g3 owners with crash problems, upping the cpu voltage
a bit did it for me!
i also have proper cooling though! it never crashes on me now.

Indeed it does. Not only it is faster booting, running programs and networking than before, but also much more stable than Debian here.

And a lot more fun to use :D

I just log into linux once or twice a day for checking yahoo! mail (can't delete messages form IBrowse or AWeb) and some specific stuff with gimp (must learn how to ude IFX Lite!).

AmigaOS future seems brighter!

I've gone back to the original pre-release for now. My results sound
about the same as yours for both the pre and the update. Only
difference is that I have a 7451 G4@800. It just seems odd that
cooling requirements should change so much just because of an OS
update.

I might try once more with the update, using a CD i burned on a
Windoze box, just in case something went wrong burning with the demo
of MakeCD. (MasterISO -which I own- doesn't work on my A1)

Hear hear! The update has worked great for me with more problems corrected than have been created.

My annoying 2 minute delay when booting after the kernal's been loaded is gone. The first time I booted after the upgrade was truely a WTF moment, and very much appreciated!

The 'screenful of crud when trying to run PPaint on a Radeon GFX card' error is half gone. Now I get readable menus and the bottom half of the toolbar when I run it and the rest of the screen is mush, while the buttons on the top half of the toolbar are still an unreadable mess but at least they're in clearly defined boxes... Increasing the stack size fixed a lot of the problem in the FakeNative screenmodes but accessing the Radeon screenmodes is still messy. Oh well, maybe there will be an improvement with upgrade#2.

My local network speed is faster (but not as fast as it could be), which is always a good thing. I still can't access the A1 from the PC side of things - I think I've screwed up the share directory on the A1 but can't be bothered tracking that down at the moment. I can yank files off the PC from the A1 and that's good enough for now.

I still can't get internet sharing through the PC's (dial-up) connection to work and I know I'm doing something wrong there (other than trying to network through a Winblows box in the first place!), I may just wait until we get ADSL and a router/hub next year and be done with that sordid little mess...
