LOL, it's the Articia S chipset all over again. Hopefully this time around the hardware won't suck and so we'll again have a common hardware platform for OS4 and MOS2. |

| Well, on reading up on genesi's plans, they have some aura firmware they probably want to flash it with, i wouldnt rule out a lower cost os4 board however

| If it takes really 18 months or more to make a next motherboard then they should forget AMCC 460 and use Freescale 8641 or even something better instead IMHO ! 460 would be interesting if it was released this autumn but it's not after 18-24 months. Even if our community is small and not easy to make money we should go forwards and not backwards. 8641 has Altivec ! Last edited by Tomppeli on 30-Sep-2008 at 02:39 AM.

The news title says "Sam AMCC460 PROTOTYPE EVAL BOARD" and that's not true. |
Why not? An evaluation board is that just that. There are plenty of PowerPC evaluation boards that would make a nice OS4 machine. Any could make an OS4 machine. But just being a prototype has nothing to do with OS4 just because it was posted on an Amiga site and was at an Amiga meeting.
The same as if a Panda or the Trokia board showed up. And AFAIK OS4 doesn't run on those. Hopefully they give up talking to Amiga and instead lend Rogue their boards and get an OEM. We know it's possible!
Without OS4.1 the Sam440 was just like this AMCC460. It probably ran Linux and that's about it. So, right now, in that respect is it any different? Except you can't buy it? |

Nah, that would be logical. Setting up a bounty would be much more like us
Btw, wanna port OS4 to MPC5121e/MPC5123? _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). | As someone else said: Buy what you can get now (e.g. Sam440), not what you might or might not be able to get later.
Not to mention that if too many people doN'T buy a Sam440, we most certainly WON'T get OS4 for any hypothetical future Sam460. Last edited by ChrisH on 30-Sep-2008 at 09:30 AM.

| Is a great motherboard, with the current hardware standards, for to can find the hardware more easy, because we know the problems to find today with the speed of development in PC, the computer of today is old tomorrow. |

I second that, it's rather silly to speculate about possible future board designs by ACube just because you've seen an AMCC prototype board at PA. They're obviously busy now getting the Sam440-Flex board out and being such a small company I doubt that they would even have the resources to start designing another board while they're still busy with another project. Also keep in mind that ACube will probably want to see how well the Sam sells on the OS4 market, to know if bringing out PPC motherboards for this market is worth it at all. If the Sam sells poorly, they will most likely not consider designing yet another board, if there is apparently no market for it, and since most embedded systems don't require very powerful hardware, they're not likely to make a lot of money with a faster board on the embedded market.
Right now there is a great chance for the Amiga platform which has shrunk to almost nothing by now, to start expanding again. We have a great OS with frequent updates and lots of new things, and now we have new hardware available to run it on, which is more affordable than any other OS4-capable board before, with a lot of potential yet to be exploited by programmers. So people should take the opportunity, instead of dreaming about what may or may not happen some years from now. Last edited by COBRA on 30-Sep-2008 at 11:54 AM.

| An evaluation board is just that... for evaluation. It shows that ACube is looking ahead to the future and weighing up different options. They obviously want what is best for them and, surely what will work best for the community.
It's like... ACube has taken the 460 out for dinner, they aren't dating or anything.
At this point in the relationship.... why would you even -mention- marriage? _________________ ¤¤ Official Hyperion Zealot ¤¤

| It looks like a very interesting motherboard. Worth keep in mind, and hopefully it should be a cheap system :) There is hope after all :) _________________ Helge K. Leaving the Amiga in favour of a PC..

| Well it is no surprise there is a next-generation chip out there.
There should be no hesitation to purchase from the current Sam440 series.
When/if the new gear hits the market just sell your current 440 or keep it for a backup. Trading up doesn't necessarily mean losing your prior investment in a motherboard. Especially in this market I expect older boards to retain their value quite well.
It would be nice to be on the "upgrade treadmill" for hardware. Just not as frantic as in PC-land.

| SAM 460?
Same CPU, faster speed, DDR2 and PCI-E, finally, maybe Cache, even FPU!
But great to see some mid-end or current highend board.
Hope SAM460 PCI Express would appear seen and put SAM440 as entry board (as well as in price range).
More comparable and advanced board with previous AmigaOne and Pegasos. _________________ OS 3.x AROS and MOS supporter, fi di good, nothing fi di unprofessionalism. Learn it harder way! SinclairQL and WII U lover :D YT http://www.youtube.com/user/rasvoja
