Announcement   Announcement : IntuitionBase.com Update
   posted by Ryu on 12-Jan-2005 19:12:12 (3861 reads)
First off, a new article has been published in our article section. The article itself is one I (Ryu) wrote for Total Amiga magazine last year and I have been granted permision to publish it on IntuitionBase. It gives you a bit of an insight into OS4 on the classic Amiga hardware.

Next up a bug has been fixed with the compatible hardware section so submited links should now be fine.

And last but by no means least and thanks to John (Amigadude) our Customisation section has been revamped so it should be a little easier to navigate. So please send in your backdrops, icon packs, themes etc to us for inclusion on IntuitionBase.

I would also like to thank Mason for drawing the cool graphics that are now in use on our customisation section.

As ever I have more idea on things to add to extend the site, so please stay tuned and thanks for supporting IntuitionBase.com

Good article, Ryu. It and the video you shot show off OS4 on the BPPC quite nicely. To an A1 owner it all seems very familiar (and much faster than I'd expected from a 603/166).

@Ryu

Good report - nice to see that things are progressing!

IMO it would be interesting to see how certain things perform across the different OS4 platforms; I'm very glad to hear that it runs well on the 160MHz PPC - as mine is the 240MHz version :phew

Yeah, I should put a link to the video footage in the article.. The video I shot a week or so ago and if you look at the news page you'll find a news piece with the links in...

Edit: Okay the links are included in the article now

Thanks for a great article.

The only thing that i wonder now is if you have to have a small 68k formated partition that holds the bootrom and a quick startup that loads the rom into memory and reboots or is it solved in a diffrent way ?

I guess there will never be possiblefor Hyperion to make a custom flashrom for the PPC cards ? Documentation and source code for it will never be released i guess

Well great work anyway. This is what would bring me back to using my miggy more often.. But sooner or later i will sell/throw it away.. So please hurry up hyperion

You dont have the OS4 native filesystems in the RDB of the HDD so the 68k ones can live there fine which means all the partitions are readable on the 68k side too.

So to boot OS4 there is a small command in C: called Bootloader which basically just switches off the 68k CPU and loads in the kickstart modules, nothing to it

Hmm intresting I don't understand how you can have a FFS2 formated drive under 68k but hey it works

I wonder how Hyperion will do the install in the final version.?
A bootdisk to go with the OS4 cd or simply demand that you have OS 3.1 and cdrom support before you can install OS4 (like OS 3.9)

Is there any plans from individual computers to make a rom replacement (Flashable) for the rom sockets on the MB ? Would be nice to not have to reboot after a cold reset. But i guess i can live with that one time as i have that already with my curent setup.

EDIT:
To edit and answer myself. Anyone know if this Kickflash will be made ?

Kickflash OS4 already exists. CoyoteFlux worked on it. Check here.
But Jens page is seriously out of date

But that version is a Zorro 2 card.. Right

What i'm asking for is the version that replaces the the kickstart roms on the motherboard. Like the old rom selectors from the A500 time.. When ppl used to have 1.3/2.0 installed and switched with a reboot or an external switch.

to quote from the link i supplied:

Quote:
As with all our products, the installation is very easy: Remove the kickstart roms, place Kickflash into the empty sockets, and insert the roms into the sockets on the Kickflash. Additional connections are not necessary!

Hi,

Ryu, are you sure you have 3.0ROM in your Amiga? I thought 3.1 were required to run OS4.

@Nickman

Youre quote is the answer to your question!

Ok let me rephrase the question then

Will Individual Computers make kickflash publicly buyable/available ?

@elwood

The machine I took to Big Bash 2 had 3.0 roms in it. This one has 3.1 in it and they both ran OS4 fine...

In fact theoretically I belive you should be able to boot OS4 with 1.3 rom...
