News   News : HEATHROW AIRPORT TERMINAL 2 EVACUATED
posted by Anonymous on 14-Feb-2003 12:26:33 (1853 reads)
Heathrow Terminal Evacuated
Terminal two of Heathrow Airport was evacuated earlier today because of a terror alert. The terminal was cleared at 11.20pm after an unattended bag was found. It was opened about an hour-and-a-half later after the left luggage was cleared.

An airport spokesman warned that flights had been affected.

Arrests

Meanwhile, four people are being questioned by anti-terrorist police after they were arrested a few miles from the airport.

They were detained on Thursday at Langley in Berkshire, a small town near Slough under the Heathrow flightpath.

They were held under the Terrorism Act 2000 but details of the arrests only emerged on Friday.

Details emerged as anti-terrorist detectives continued questioning a passenger over a live grenade found in luggage at Gatwick airport on Thursday.

The 37-year-old man had arrived on a British Airways flight from the Colombian capital, Bogota. He is thought to be a Venezuelan of Bangladeshi origin.

Terminal closed

The plane, with 125 passengers on board, landed at Gatwick just before 1.30pm.

The man was arrested in the North Terminal by Sussex police and held under anti-terrorism laws.

The North Terminal was immediately closed and flights suspended, causing long delays for thousands of passengers.

Yesterday, two men were arrested near Heathrow Airport's perimeter fence and held as a "precautionary measure.

No weapons were found on the Heathrow pair but officers were not satisfied with the answers they gave. They were believed to be of North African origin.
