hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : GuruMeditation offers hardware to OS4 driver developers!
posted by Anonymous on 15-May-2005 20:18:52 (8574 reads)
In a very generous offer on this forum GuruMeditation, a leading AmigaONE dealer based in Gothenburg, Sweden is offering sponsorship for driver developers for OS4 as an incentive to improve what products AmigaOS version 4.0 can work with. This vital move will bring direct improvements for AmigaOS version 4.0 users who will be able to use more and more kit with their Amigas!

The owner of GuruMeditation, Andreas Loong said:

"We would consider sponsoring development of hardware drivers for OS4, wether it be PCI, clockport or Zorro based. So I'll make this a general call to developers: If you can make a driver, let me know and I'll send you the required hardware."

"We feel drivers are inherently important to the platform as a whole, and OS4 currently covers alot of audio and video drivers, a good number of IDE controllers. It would be very good to see more ethernet, scsi controllers and the like."

If you are interested email andreas.loong (a) gurumeditation.se or by postal service to:

Pop along to GuruMeditation, a prominent AmigaONE dealer who also led the way in many customer service initiatives including workaround hardware for IDE issues on the XE boards and being the first to offer a repair service.

Might aswell add that clockport drivers will also be included, as many zorro cards (especially those from Individual Computers) have a clockport on them.

Thank me if this produces any drivers instead. A gesture is only worth the sum of what comes out of it ;)

Brilliant. If I

a) didn't already have an Aone and
b) couldn't code my way out of a IDE driver if my life so depended on it,

I would pick you up on this directly. Good intentions does merit praise in this case. Your initiative is commendable, even if no drivers were to come out of it in the end.

Or to add to the Swedish praise:

Grymt gött gjort!

Good stuff Andreas!
A really good intiative. Hopefully you'll get some drivers made this way

@ thread

What drivers do we need first?

SCSI? higher speed wireless cards than 11mbit?
TV cards? Wasn't there a guy that made a TV card program? But he lacked
some of the newer model of cards?
Something else?

Sounds like a good initiative.

I would go for a high speed wireless network card (i.e 54mbps or higher).

Its a shame I cant progra.

Id like to see:

- Drivers for treating a pocketpc as a mass storage device ( which is half the battle ), similar for Palm.

- Drivers for 54g wireless networking in PCI and USB form.

- Drivers for scanners and printers over USB

Well what holding me back is Documentation

If I have the docs I chould write some USB drivers.

PS: USB Printer Transport layer is already ported by Thomas Graff
(You still need TurboPrint)

OpenOffice.org uses SANE, so we're having to port that as part of the requirements (including providing feedback to the OS4 team particularily requirements for USB scanning, as we are having to port LibUSB)

Writing HW driver for home computer is something I want to do someday, simply because of curiosity & the fun of it.

I have designed one LCD display construction & built it and I wrote HW documentation for the driver, but never had the time to write the driver itself.
It's fun to tweak with the HW in some sane&reliable (near) RTOS environment.

So, someday, hopefully....

And I fight to resist the desire to start with Radeon AIW drivers.

Just kidding: "If you can make a driver, let me know and I'll send you the required hardware. " .... If I teach my wife to drive a ferrari, you'll send a 360 Modena?
"

Nice altruistic movement from GuruMeditation, really! I hope there will be brave coders to take this chance. I would really like to see SCSI card drivers...
