You noticed it then

Kinda ported by "accident", SDL_perl was the ultimate test for the dynamic
loading in perl, and frozen bubble the best test for SDL_perl.

People have been waiting for it for a while so thought I'd beter not keep to
myself

I've got two niggles here ,

a request for volume Usr: during the startup, most
likely something inside perl rather than frozen bubble,

and the fact that you can't run it in fullscreen mode. Not sure if that's a
SDL issue, a SDL_perl issue or a frozebubble issue.

Would I be correct guessing that I just can't install, doubleclick and play away?

It's sound as if I need knowledge of the SDK to work?

perl needs much of the components of the SDK: make, abc-shell (sh), core-utils etc to
function completely, but if all you need to do is play frozen bubble then
you only need perl and and abc-shell.

Assuming you have no SDK:

Get perl 5/8/5/04 from os4depot, unpack the archive and install it to the
location of your choice.

assign SDK: to the SDK directory within the perl archive.

get abc-shell from os4depot and install in SDK:Local/C or elsewhere in
your path.

Then you should be able to run frozen bubble by clicking on the archive.

andy:

the niggles are:

All thoose ./ problems (usr: , GG: gcc: etc .fblevels etc .. i have a feeling there might be some paths u wanna edit instead of using and/or -lunix .

Sound , switch to 4096 buffers as sound is choppy (only on highscore it seems) ,look for Mix_OpenAudio or simmilar in the source. (its probably set to 256 buffers or something)

Fullscreen , typical sdl problem switch from SDL_HWSURFACE to SDL_SWSURFACE (problem with latest SDL since 51.15 ...)

might be wrong though, been a while since i looked at the source and perl to me is like norwegian to you ..

anyway great stuff and since i have never seen the game on linux/pc/mac or whatever...well it certainly is one of the better games out there in the sdl world so far.

it turns out that the request for usr: is SDL_mixer looking for
/usr/lib/timidity/timidity.cfg after failing to find timidty.cfg in .

adding a timidy.cfg to the frozen-bubbles directory solves that.

WRT the others .fblevels were originlly searched for in $ENV{HOME} ie
the users home directory, I changed ths to /bubbles in the source, i'm not
getting these errors here, I'll check the source again incase I missed a pathname.

interesting sound is perfect here except that the music always fails with unkown format for me.
I'm not getting any sound on highscores at all. Simpleplay which IIRC uses SDL can play the music though, so SDL_Perl ought to understand it. odd

As I metioned in an email to you I have full screen working now, but can't toggle between screen and window,

Thanks for the feedback

andy:sorry dood, didnt see the mail. i will look at em again ;)

as for the sound problem, i never heard music either but on the highscore u can hear the choppy sound (just where u are asked to type your name) , typical buffer problem though no idea...anyway check mail later on.

You don't need ABC-Shell, just replace the sh line in the startup script with the following:

perl -I bubbles:blib/lib -I bubbles:blib/arch frozen-bubble

Works a treat.

"Unknown format" error? This rings a bell... most probably you're using the fixed version of SDL_Mixer from os4depot, which is AFAIK still broken, see here:

http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=comments&file=development/library/sdl_mixer.lha

The only workaround I've found for this is by installing the older version of SDL_Mixer from the previous SDK (1.2.4 if I remember correctly).

Judging by other posts the music thing is a SDL_mixer version issue.

interesting... perl crashes on exit here if it's not run from abc-sh...

(to get music) and to get the choppy sfx problem away raise buffers.

anyway i aint 100% sure so if youre still having problems feel free to send me the stuff so i can have a peek.
