Software News   Software News : Updated Wesnoth 1.1.11 compile on OS4Depot
   posted by salass00 on 3-Nov-2006 11:53:39 (3961 reads)
Note: Everyone should switch to this new version since the old build suffers from extreme slowness, almost to the point where it is unplayable.

Wesnoth 1.1.11 (full archive) (old clib2 build)
Wesnoth 1.1.11 (replacement exe) (faster, newlib based build)

Excellent.

I find each newer version is better if you do not try to use old save points.

Thanks, it's the first time I see an evidence that newlib is faster.

I find each newer version is better if you do not try to use old save points.

I noticed that, too. Unfortunately, save points are a must. ;)
Particularly slow is trying to load a saved game from another version (v1.1.1 on v.1.1.11, in my case). It took more than 10 minutes here...
The start of a scenario is always relatively fast, but it gradually slows down to a crawl, especially on big maps with lots of units. To really see that slowness in action, you have to play "Test of the Clan", one of the last scenarios in "Heir to the Throne". After the first couple of
turns, I actually made dinner, ate it and returned and the CPU was still not done!

Fingers crossed for this new version that I'm downloading now. ;)

With this version I was finally able to complete "Home of the North Elves", without problems with slowness and crashing as with v1.1.7 of Wesnoth (Yes, I used a save from another version and had no problems except that it did take a bit longer to load at first, which isn't really a big deal IMO). I'm currently at the "Return to Wesnoth" mission and it's working very nicely indeed. Not playing it at the moment though as I'm not at or near my A1.

Cool! That was one of the worse scenarios in terms of speed. Glad to know it's better.

This kind of improvement was exactly what I felt could be achieved. Fortunately, the solution was found.

Still room for improvement, compilation-wise? ;)

Just finished the "Heir to the Throne" campaign. The dark queen was surprisingly easy to defeat once I had killed off about 90% of her troops. Guess I'll have to start another campaign now or do something else...

Did you do it on "Hard" mode?
Yes, the Queen is pretty easy to take down, but, if you reach that scenario without huge amounts of gold, you probably won't come close to her.
I finished that campaign twice already, both on "medium" difficulty, while trying to use different strategies. And as soon as I finish "Rise of Wesnoth", I'll probably try "Heir to the Throne" again, to see what's different in this new version.

No, it was on "Easy". I had about ~2000 gold at the start of the mission so I could recruit a lot of knights. Still had a little over 1400 gold left at the end though.

I guess I'll play it again later on a harder difficulty (not now though).

Tried playing the "Rise of Wesnoth" campaign on "Medium" some time ago, but got hopelessly stuck on the "Temple of the Deep" mission (up until that mission it went pretty good, though)...

No wonder you have so little trouble on that campaign.Stop playing on "easy"! ;)
Hard difficulty is too much, IMO, but medium is spot on.

"Temple of the Deep" is not that hard if you played your troops well in the earlier scenarios. Having at least a couple of the Shock Troopers from the 2nd scenario really helps, especially if they are upgraded.
The dwarf,a couple of white mages and a few weak screening units and you're there. The leader is pretty hard, though, and should be approached with care (this is where the weak units may be of service, keeping him busy until the dwarf, mages and Shock Troopers are in good position to kill the DemiLich).

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm currently at the "Swamp of Esten" with two shock troopers left. The third one unfortunately got killed in the 2nd mission.

I didn't chose to go that way in this campaign. It was "The Midlands" for me.
I'm playing the "Kalyan" missions, currently trying out "The Troll Hole". Pretty tough,so far.

Boy, is this game addictive... ;)
