Internet News   Internet News : New wiki based ExoticA website online
   posted by buzz on 30-Jan-2008 20:58:33 (2168 reads)
After more than 2 years in development, we have finally launched the new ExoticA website. Although some areas are a bit rough around the edges, most is ready to be browsed, and of course as a wiki based site, visitors are welcome to submit corrections and new information.

The site has more than 8000 pages of content, and is a gerat source for amiga game music, box scans, and other items of interest.

the old site is still online @ http://old.exotica.org.uk

Did not like the new CSS pages.

CSS web pages looked fine in OWB but? way not use tables?

I started OWB, browsed the site up and down slowly ....

After clicking the "view source" tab on the webpage, the OWB browser froze same as it does whit www.vg.no.

Why not use tables for layout? because I wanted to bring the site into the 21st century.
The old html3.0 site was unmaintainable. I suggest trying out firefox or another modern browser for now until bugs with owb (i dont know this one) are sorted.

@buzz

Great work. Love the Ocean banner!

It was great to see the box art there - would be nice to screenshots along side, but that's what a Wiki's for I guess!

we currently have 4 logo themes which rotate on a daily basis. We hope to have more in the future. You're right about screenshots. This is something we are doing on the game pages themselves, where we are combining generated info from unexotica (a simple database of game music), with hand edited wiki data.

See http://www.exotica.org.uk/wiki/Leander and http://www.exotica.org.uk/wiki/Agony_(game) which are good examples of this

What happened to HTML4.0?

AFAIK all the Amiga browsers support that. Speaking of frames, when I compared IBrowse to Safari, it didn't to them propely. They had no lines. So it loosk like even the tables support it not perfect even yet! Even though IIRC tables came before frames so they have had time.

Although OWB uses that Microsoft font, some pages really do put AWeb and IBrowse to shame. Hopefully the CSS version will come out soon. Otherwise there will be no point for our only native Amiga browsers, and that will be a sad day.

most amiga browsers have no support for css. so you would still need font tags and what not to change colour etc, leading to a big mess. amiga browsers support html4 things like but not . Designing a website which looks good on ibrowse is not something i want to do in 2007 With the new webkit based browsers being released, there will be no problem using the site. And im sure most people have a second computer which has a firefox or similar (I use konqueror)
