Software News   Software News : WinUAE 1.4.6 released
posted by AmiKit on 2-Feb-2008 14:08:10 (5001 reads)
WinUAE is able to emulate 68k Amiga models on your Windows PC. This version is the last one that runs on Windows 98/ME. The following versions will require Windows 2000 or newer.

Download from http://www.winuae.net/

1.4.5 problems fixed:

- Mouse never capturing. (Windows 98/ME, rarely on W2K/XP)
- Some games crashing.
- Broken sprite outside playfields-feature and SWIV score information.
- Fullscreen mode with non-default refresh rate fallback problem.

Other bugs fixed:

- A600/A1200/A4000 IDE emulation freeze if >2G drive/HDF.
- CDTV E.S.S. Mega "semi-hidden" track now loads properly on W2K/XP.
- Crash when switching between <=2MB Chip + Fast and >2MB Chip setting.
- Sound emulation tweak. (Dungeon Master II, perhaps some others)
- Unstable NMI (IRQ7) option in cycle-exact and more-compatible modes.
- "Full-window" mode didn't always allow Windows desktop RTG resolution.

New features:

- Inverted mouse and analog joystick input sources.
- Input device (USB joystick, mouse etc..) on the fly insertions and removals supported. Device names saved to configuration file.
- Automatic joystick switching, firebutton 'inserts' any non-selected joystick to Amiga joystick port, mouse port selected if second button pressed or there is already other joystick in joystick port with firebutton pressed.
- Dynamic JIT direct memory allocation. Increased Z3 and RTG maximum sizes to 1G and 512M. (If at least 2G physical RAM)
- A3000 confirmed 2.04 ROM added to ROM scanner.
- CD32 FMV cartridge ROM added to ROM scanner. ROM and autoconfig emulated. Overlay and video/audio decoder chips not emulated.
- Directory filesystem ACTION_EXAMINE_ALL implementation is now more compatible with buggy programs.
- CIA/Gayle overlay emulation setting added to advanced chipset.
- Original early A1000 non-EHB Denise added to advanced chipset.
- Original A1000 (and early A2000) Agnus blitter busy bug added.
- Keyboard reset warning emulated and added to advanced chipset.
- Debugger improvements, hex/dec/bin converter, all commands that accept numeric parameters also accept register names (RAx,RDx,PC,USP,VBR,..), number prefixes supported, hex = 0x or $, bin = %, dec = !.
- 1M (both 0xe0/0xf8 and 0xf0/0xf8) and 2M (0xa8/0xb0/0xe0/0xf8) ROM image support.
- Implemented "stretch to fullscreen" filtering option.

The 060 is supported for ages, the PPC will never be supported.

Never was the word used some years ago about emulating Amiga on PC's

Let me evaluate. The PPC will never be supported by Toni Wilen.

It would probably take support from the MorphOS Team to get PPC emulation in UAE and I doubt they are interested in doing this..

@Derringer

In the opinion of Toni Willen, PPC processors have nothing to do with Amigas, that is why he has no interest in including PPC support in WinUAE.

The 060 is supported for ages, the PPC will never be supported.

While the option for the 060 has been included in the past few main releases, it is still recommended the 020 option is used as it offers the most complete and compatible core (aside from the 68000 option), and selecting the 060 option does not in any way mean the 68k emulation runs faster or better.

@d0c

The PPC issue has been raised many times, and it plain and simply is not worth the time or effort, not to mention that the current maintainer (Toni) is not going to ever include it. The benefit of having a PPC emulation in WinUAE (or its variants) for just a few applications and/or games is not worth their time when more important issues of making the emulation more accurate and compatible are still required.

At the end of the day it is about emulating the classic Amiga hardware accurately, and not the third party add ons it may have had thrust upon it.

Oh yeah? Then why does this version have support for 1GB RTG memory?

I would gladly try to add the code for PPC emulation into WinUAE, and I'm sure lots of you would join such a project, but I have no idea how a BlizzardPPC works and how it would be plugged into WinUAE's code.

Has someone an idea about how it could be done?

EDIT- BTW, there's something I'm thinking about since a long time : implementing a modular plugin system into WinUAE which would allow programmers to write hardware extensions emulation that you would then be able to load into WinUAE.

For exemple, you would design a Cybervision643D plugin that the user would then be able to add into WinUAE's A4000 emulation.

This sytem would be much more flexible and open a new field in emulating the Amiga : emulating all the extensions. For exemple, you could also code a plugin that emulates the PC emulator card that you could plug into the A500, or even the simple 512k extension board, etc...

right, i think it is thousand times faster to release the OS4 software for 68k or MOS and add the new api features in a opensource library.

currently there are on Jörg Strohmeyers page >4 gb file access funcs and from Ilka allocsysobject source from os4emu from MOS

other OS4 features, i dont know that soft really need OS4.

and also must look in future, when begin such a long time project, then must look not that AROS AFA have in 4 years more features than OS4 MOS and all soft is port to that systems, because MOS OS4 have no real hardware and the hardware die time by time

Ohh please wake up, just becoarse you have taken some AROS code to improve OS3.x don't not mean that you have more features than either MOS or OS4.

When you make such stupid claims I do loose respect for you.

If you look at AllocSysObject() it should not take more that 10minutes to do that on OS3.x onless you also want to make resource tracking at the same time.

Why don't you make some importent improvement like making new DOS api's to support 64bits files, or maybe just do some hw drivers... tweaking code to run on Classic is okay but to be honest its not that hard if you can code.

You may want to actually check again then, since 1.4.6 does not support 1GB of RTG memory. It does allow you to select up to 1GB of Z3 ram to add on, but that is limited by the actual physical amount of memory available in your PC.

The amount of memory available to the emulated machine has nothing to do with the accuracy of said emulation. Just because nobody actually made a 1GB ram expansioin for the Amiga, or added a 512MB RTG card to it is irrelevant to the emulation of the Amiga hardware, which does allow for both extra ram to be added, and autoconfigured, as well as RTG cards to be plugged in and used (CGX and Picasso96 software exists for that very purpose).

And to be honest, you are just nitpicking now and apparently just appearing to be obstinate for the sheer hell of it.
