Software News   Software News : Software MIDI Sampler Phonolith 1.0 released
posted by Timo on 20-Apr-2008 15:31:27 (3370 reads)
Phonolith is a software instrument for AmigaOS 4, which plays sampled waveforms. It's usable with Horny and other CAMD based sequencers, or just a connected MIDI keyboard.

Starting with version 1.0 Phonolith is free software under GPL now. This decision was made, because I won't spend much time in this project anymore. I lost the need for it, because I stopped making music on Amiga. Sorry. Please contact me, if you are interested in the source code. A sourceforge.net project will follow.

Also the MIDI sequencer Horny is free now (but not open-source). Check the website!

Phonolith Features (Version 1.0):

- downmixing to AIFF file
- receives MIDI notes through camd.library
- mixer unit with non-linear volume/panning controls and peak meters
- 16 different instruments at once
- ADSR amp envelope (non-linear decay and release curves) for each instrument
- unlimited number of samples for each instrument, for key and velocity ranges
- supports AIFF and WAVE sample format (only 16 bit)
- imports Logic EXS24 instruments (PPC and Intel format)
- ReAction GUI
- application.library support (for saving settings and registering Phonolith as application)
- connection to Horny 1.3 for automatic project loading
- AmiUpdate support
- locale.library support

Check AmiUpdate or download at:

Yeah, thanks also from me. But I'm sorry about the reason, Timo.

Are you stopping making music, or stopping using Amiga? Or just stopping using the Amiga for making music? And is there any specific thing you are missing that made you take the decision?

Best regards,

Niels

I think the decision is VST/i and a lot of music apps. :)

I won't stop making music, but I need a sequencer with midi and audio and a good usability. I was completely happy with Horny for MIDI, but it was too bad written for adding audio support. I wanted to develop a complete new Horny, but this would take maybe three years. And then, for what? Amiga's future looks not very good.
I'm now using Logic on Mac. Horny was inspired a lot of it.

By the way, I won't stop programming, but I will return to my "roots". I want to make small games again, I think I will use SDL, so you can expect Amiga versions, too.

Can this play MIDI files directly? Or do I need an external program in order to do that. The documentation is a little brief. Some pointers to where some good instrument tables can be found would be helpful. It would be even better if there were an archive file with all the instruments already set up.

It's sad to hear that you won't be spending much time on this project any more, but understandable.

Hans

@Hans
MIDIs cannot be played directly, only if you load all instruments manually. Phonolith can only import EXS24 instruments (Sampler of Apple's Logic). Or you create "own" Instruments by loading WAV or AIFF samples. An Instrument is a collection of Samples mapped to keys. One sample is enough for an instrument, but it won't sound very good, because they have to be pitched too much (like in Tracker programs).
Anyway, Phonolith was not really made to play MIDI files. More to create own instruments.

First of all:

Timo,
thank you very much for your big efforts around Phonolit.

And thanks very much for giving this good piece of software for free and opensource.

I've received the source from Timo and:
It's very clear programmed in Cpp. Its real a joy to read the source.
Congratulation !
Thank you again.

@hans
For playback and/or saving MIDIs as WAV use timidity, I've ported to OS4.

You can download it from here:
http://www.os4depot.net/share/audio/play/timidity.lha

This archive don't contain the instruments. You can use the so called GUS-patches samples:
http://www.os4depot.net/share/audio/play/gus_patches.lha
! 30MB !
or soundfonts:
http://www.os4depot.net/share/audio/play/anotherxg_sf.lha ! 29 MB !
http://www.os4depot.net/share/audio/play/ct2mgm_sf.lha ! 2MB !

The latter soundfont has only a poor quality measured against the other.

I've made a reaction GUI for Timidity, but nevertheless it is callable also via Shell.

Kindly
alfa
