hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : DVI support in Radeon HD drivers
   posted by SOFISTISOFTWARE on 10-May-2011 17:48:27 (4934 reads)
good news from Hans:

DVI output for Radeon HD 4000 series cards

Read more...

Posted by Hans de Ruiter

I am pleased to announce that the RadeonHD driver for AmigaOS 4.x can now also output to DVI on Radeon HD 4000 series cards. Apart from being another item ticked off the driver development to-do list, from a personal perspective this means that I can now use my 4-port DVI KVM switch fully. Previously, switching to my Sam460ex would mean the monitor switching to the VGA output, and then manually switching to DVI again when switching back to another machine. The button on my monitor for switching inputs has already lost its "click" sensation due to the large amount of switching, so I am glad to hand that task over to the KVM.

Great work Hans!

Any word on when compositing and 3D support might be available for RadeonHD cards?

Yes it does, I noticed when plugging it in. And the monitor days it's digital too.

@Cobra

You missed Han's previous Blog entry.

Radeon HD 2000-4000 Compositing is Operational
Posted by Hans de Ruiter
The title of this post says it all; compositing for Radeon HD 2000-4000 graphics cards (R6xx-R7xx chipsets) is done. This is another milestone for the RadeonHD driver AmigaOS 4.x. Completion of this major feature puts the support for Radeon HD cards (R6xx-R7xx chipsets) almost on par with the support for the Radeon X1000 series (R5xx chipsets). I say almost because a few of the minor blitter acceleration functions,and DVI and VBlank interrupts are are still to do. As always, there is more work to do. Nevertheless, a composited Workbench performs well with these cards.
So, what's next? Well, apart from the aforementioned DVI and interrupt support, I am eager to get 3D drivers up and running. DVI is something that I'd like to get working soon as I use a 4 port DVI KVM, and so would like to be able to stop switching to VGA.

This is good news yes.

It's unfortunate these gfx cards move so fast. I was at a computer market and all I could see were 5000 and 6000 series cards. I asked about the 4000 and was asked why I would want such an old card.

This isn't good. When I bought my A1 I just picked everything off the shelf. And with OS4 it all worked fine. Now my X1000 isn't even here and it's almost up to the stage where I need to buy a 2nd hand gfx card for it!

This isn't good for the brand new high end machine coming. I expected I could just do what I did with the A1 and pick things off the shelf. Now I will be chasing around for old stock. Will I take a backwards approach to last time with the X1000 and run Linux until OS4 catches up?

BTW, what happened to that gfx deal Hyperion made, to get modern gfx drivers into OS4?

@Hypex

SNAP development was cancelled by SciTech back in 2006, so its essentially dead, even though another company bought it in 2008.

I've never heard of any "deal". As far as I know, Hans is the only guy doing gfx card drivers. Not an easy task considering he needs to buy, borrow, steal the different cards to even do a driver.

My hats off to you Hans, your work is much appreciated.

Now I just need to find a nice 23" monitor.
