Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : X500 PLUS - A500 inspired case ready for pre-orders (UPDATED)
posted by vox on 3-May-2012 22:55:34 (6940 reads)
Hi everyone,

Presenting the X500 PLUS, a tribute to the computers of the '80s and 90s and the legendary A500.

Supports powerful x86 boards (mini-itx and flex-atx boards).
Build and customise your own retro but powerful and modern wedge shaped machine running AROS, Windows, Linux, WinUAE, build your Natami machine.

Supports the SAM boards by ACube running OS4. SAM 440, 440 flex and 460.

Some limitations: being only 58mm high you’ll need to use processors heatsinks that fit (my Intel i3 came with the right low profile heatsink for example).

There is no need to do anything with the SAMs obviously, maybe just file the I/O panel a bit.

You’ll be using a picoPSU (of your choice and they come in 80, 90, 120, 150 and 160W) so power is at a premium and also you need to consider heat generated.

The X500 PLUS shown in the video has:
Intel i3 cpu running at 2.5GHz
8GB DDR3 RAM (16GB supported
USB3.0
HDMI ports
x16 PCI-Express slot
, here I have connected an ATI Radeon HD 6570 2GB graphics card. This is one of the most powerful low profile cards you can get and it does get hot but it runs games such as Mass Effect 3 really well. My set up also has a 150W picoPSU with external 150W brick. See video.
The X500 PLUS has one low profile expansion slot. Length and thickness (no dual slot) limit of the card applies, the ATI HD 6570 2GB above is 170mm long for example and it fits nicely.

Full size, easy to find, standard keyboard.

It’s quite a good one, chiclet keyboard and it comes in white or black.
Model: Emprex 6310U keyboard and I can only find them with the U.K. layout so if you want you can buy the case without the keyboard and get your localised version yourself.

The adhesives for the Amiga keys “A” are available from ACube, amigakit and others. They should fit nicely over the rounded Windows logos.

Space for a slim DVD-RW/Blu-Ray
3.5” multi card reader
Two to three 2.5” Hard Disk or Solid State Drives
(I recommend the SSDs as they have no moving parts, they are faster, silent and don’t generate heat).

Fractal Design silent 40mm fan, like the one in the video or Scythe silent 40mm.

A black version will be available.

A minimum of 50 orders is necessary to go ahead, the case is made of lots of parts so I will be assembling them one by one…so please be patient.

You will have to use your best pc building skills to make it nice and tidy inside, routing cables the proper way and allow good airflow, I’ll see if I can provide cable ties.

Crank the volume right up and select HD...

Fantastic work! I love the way the X500Plus seems like a natural evolution from the Minimig design.

Something I would like to see on your website is a set of diagrams showing how different boards are fixed insde the case and where their ports are accessed (Minimig, FPGA Arcade, standard PC designs, etc).

I hope nobody tries to steal these designs off you. Make sure you have a proper copyright in place as some people have been know to take designs that are not theirs and pass them off as their own.

@TheDaddy

It looks absolutely stunning, my only small gripe is I'd prefer the LED's were on the right side as traditionally done with the original Amiga's.

Anyway still love it, hope I can afford one.

Nice.

Also I prefer to see some old school photos about it as well.

Is it going to be available via Amiga sales channels? And how much will it cost?

"Intel i3 cpu running at 2.5GHz"
But anything below 3Ghz is no good for dekstop!

1) What's the cost per unit for pre-ordering, or have I missed reading it somewhere?
2) How much is the estimated lead time for assembling/shipping 50 cases?
IMHO, you should go ahead and post this thread to kickstarter. I sense that you have a lot of potential to build a small business scheme around your product since the audience there is in a way, similar to amiga geeks and regularly supports retro ideas having a modern boost.
3) I would also prefer the HDD and Power Led to the right side.
4) I have another question also, if a key is broken, is it easily replaceable? Cause I have some very bad experience with netbook like soft keyboards.
5) I think that your final design would go handy with an illuminated keyboard. Would it be possible to implement it?
Also, please post a slideshow of the photos to your website cause in the video they are moving way to fast.
Overall though, the design looks awesome!

I can't access youtube from work, hope to see some pictures too... how does the minimig fit inside? I also join the choir of those asking for a projected price.
Good luck!

Looks perfect!

But tbh. I don't think I could/would own a computer in that form factor again. I prefer wireless keyboards.

I agree that this is the perfect fit for a Kickstarter project. I might give you enough orders/funds to lower the retail price and Kickstarter is also superb free marketing. Remember to link back to some Amiga community sites

It still needs a couple of things to be sorted out but it's nearly completed...
The x86 set up is really for testing purposes, if I can blast aliens in Mass Effect 3 with a powerful card like the 6570 2GB, 8GB of Ram and a 2.5GHz cpu then I am happy.

Shame I sold my SAM+OS4 to finance the rest of the project otherwise a few pictures would have looked great...maybe at a later stage.

This week end:

I'll post proper pictures on my page
Calculate costs and give a price
See if I can Photoshop it in black
Get some rest

@TheDaddy
WARNING ABOUT THE Emprex 6310U KEYBOARD
I have one of these keyboards (Rev 1.0), and it does not get on too well with AmigaOS4.1: The keyboard seems to be in some kind of "sleep" mode until you press a key, at which point OS4 starts it's USB recognition process, which means it takes a few seconds after pressing a key before OS4 even knows there is a keyboard attached. Rather annoying to have to deal with after each boot

If you want a good (albiet expensive) "chicklet" keyboard, then Apple's white/silver one is the only one to go for (sadly).

Weird, it didn't happen with my SAM and OS4.1 when I was using it on my 440ep.

And it doesn't happen with Windows...actually it works really well.

I wonder if it's a driver issue?

An Apple keyboard is £45+...

PS: I'll check the revision of my two keyboards and post the version here

The Emprex 6310U keyboards I have are REVISION V1.2

That is why they probably worked on my system.

But I have also got a Revision V1.0 and it works fine with Linux and Windows.

Glad to have cleared that out

Hi Stephen,

What would be a good configuration for AROS?

Mini-ITX board: ?
CPU: ?
Onboard graphics: ?
PCI Express: ?

Pricing...

Damn this is going to be difficult...no idea, I have spent a few thousands during these years...I'll see what I can "write off".

We are looking at a minimum of 50 cases to be produced, a few parts in shiny plastic and 50 aluminium bases.
Then I'll have to buy 50 Emprex keyboards.
50 USB adapters
450 rubber feet
300 spacers
600 screws
50 DVD-RW
50 Power and SATA cables for the DVD-RW
50-100 Fractal Design silent fans 40mm
50 3.5" internal card readers (not sure if white are available still)
100 LEDs
300 cable tiers
50 switches
a load of glue gun stuff

and a massive amount of patience
