hardware AROS   hardware AROS : New AresOne 2012 and AEROS r3
posted by phoenixkonsole on 20-Jul-2012 21:31:59 (21630 reads)
Hello,

The AresOne 2012, just like its predecessors AresOne, AresOne 2010, and AresOne 2011, is a complete PC system specifically assembled to be used with AROS. The hardware components were selected to get the most out of the current AROS version, and to be ready for future improvements. The AresOne 2012 is suitable for Amiga enthusiasts, friends of light HTPC systems, and experienced users, it is not intended for the average Windows user (please keep in mind that AROS, albeit progressing nicely, is still in development).

The AROS Research Operating System is a lightweight, efficient and flexible desktop operating system, designed to help you make the most of your computer. It's an independent, portable and free project, aiming at being compatible with Amiga OS at the API level, while improving on it in many areas.

Additionally to AROS, the AresOne can be pre-installed with Debian GNU/Linux, Ubuntu or Windows, if you wish.
(BUT WHY ? NOW WITH AEROS THERE IS NO NEED)

We also include a special OEM version of Amiga Forever with the package. The latter is useful for UAE since it contains the required Kickstart and Workbench images (1.3 and 3.x) for UAE plus 50 games and 50 demos. If you need more Amiga Forever, you can also purchase the full version at a reduced price. Every AresOne customer gets a licence for the AMC software package, the program is available for download on the AMC website

A portion of the AresOne profits will be used to fund AROS projects, especially driver development and licensed application software.

So the new system is still AROS native compatible.
So you will get AEROS + you AROS distribution of choice

We have decided to add a Geforce to the base system (please check configurator for more options). This way you can use 3D acceleration in AROS native and AEROS straight away.

AROS68k /AROS Vision on AEROS on youtube

AEROS r3

Like in the past I am posting this before the ISO is up (uploading is in progress but takes some hours)

i was going to release AEROS r3 a bit sooner but thought to be the only one with some quirks in AROS68k.. whatever here is the changelog:

Codename „chewbacca defense“ (an insider)

AEROS has become a 4 in 1 OS.
You get AROSx86, AROSm68k(experimental),Linux and with PlayonLInux access to your Windows apps and Games

Following AROS apps have to be considered as non working under hosted
DOSBOX
Openuniverse
Quickcdrip
Cube (works fine but mouse-control is broken due to HOSTGL maybe?)
I have them still one the Iso(for testing) but removed them from quickstarter

Changes in r3:
PowerOFF, reboot from Quickstarter (AROS side)
SCUMMVM games
New Jabberwocky
Janus 1.2 incl. AROS VISION 68k Distro from Olaf Schönweiß
Removed non working stuff
Fixed 1941extreme causing a hard crash of Quickstarter
Added removable_media device to access "removable media" : D

K3B has been replaced by Xfburn (lightweight burning tool)
added gparted (easy partitioning)
Changed Installer to a graphical one which calls gparted and allows now also to choose locales before installing
added gmrun (linux quicklauncher)
added Transmission (for downloading future releases of AEROS ; ) )
added Terminator as main Terminal (allows to run multiple terminal sessions in one Window)
added Hurrican ( use grandr (also newly added) to change resolution to 640x480 to get fullscreen)
added 2 games to ScummVM (AROS) Beneath a steel sky and Drascula

Livemode checks for the highest resolution the framebuffer driver allows with your setup (Gpu+Monitor combination)
On my AresOne 2010 the lovemode goes into 1280x720@50Hz
In virtualbox it goes into 800x600, so it depends on HW combinations.
After installation to HD and installing your GPU-driver (Nividia, AMD, Intel, whatever) you will be able to change resolutions.
It will automatically choose the largest (ideally) resolution.

This will be the last public iso for some time...
Please test and give feedback in this thread (this will become my todo list)
I will take care about all whishes and ideas.
Copy and paste, launching AROS apps from linux side and more will come in R4
In the moment i am working on a manual in english and german.

Please give feedback and have a look at my offer (get an AresOne for doing a better video than me : D ) in this thread:

http://aros-exec.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=7423&forum=4&post_id=71686#forumpost71686

Please if you consider to do a video review, check the thread above. First comes fist, and the offer is only valid for the first who does it ; )

I know that AEROS and AROS still is a WIP and needs many things still to be worked on, but it is looking very good now and I don't understand why people would still want OS4.x and/or MorphOS3.x to be ported to x86, when they should just make the switch to AROS, or AEROS and support the work that is going on there instead.

The amount of work and time it will take to completely port OS4.x, and/or MorphOS3.x to x86 or ARM would be a waste of time and effort IMHO, when that time and effort could be better spent by just supporting what already exists in AROS & AEROS.

This is also a way to (mostly) painlessly reunite the Next Generation Amiga community and give the Classic Amiga community a cheap and easy way to move to new hardware, if/when their old original Amiga hardware finally dies and they no longer want to pay the high prices of buying more very old original hardware to replace what they have lost.

It just makes sense to me that AROS & AEROS and the world of Open Source is the way to the future eventually (be that now, or for some people, 5 years from now).

It sure would be nice to have all of the Amiga community back together and working together to keep the Amiga alive, in spirit at least, if not in original 68k hardware with custom chips and OCS/ECS/AGA.

That is my dream for our long range future anyway, even though I am an avid supporter of OS4.x, MorphOS3.x and all of the FPGA Amiga hardware, plus my large collection of original Commodore Amiga computers.

If you do not agree with this vision of the future for the Amiga, please just keep an open mind and do not keep bashing one flavor or another of the Amiga experience, as that just hurts all of us and drives some people away from all forms of the remaining Amiga community.

Congratulations to all of the hard working AROS & AEROS developers who do their work for free (for the most part). What you have accomplished over the years is finally paying off with a very nice product.

Thanks.

Regarding MOS and AmigaOS4 i think that both OS have their personal spirit.
AROS can also do a good job just as "AROS" without Amiga background.

"IF" I would be part of Hyperion, I would make an PPC hosted version of AmigaOS.
This way they can loose a much trouble regarding driver creation.

Than I would look how I can use AROS for my needs.. See at BSD / OSX.

In any case.. AROS can be taken by everyone to build upon it.

Edited and moved news item to "Aros Hardware".

(No pictures from outside servers that can affect the frontpage, simply for layout redundancy reasons ;- ) )

Regarding the news item itself, machine looks nice and nice to be able to buy an all inclusive machine for AROS

Interesting thoughts. Perhaps there should be a look towards a new specification if the PowerPC platform is unlikely to meet future requirements.

Could I buy one of the x1000 cases for something like this or is that sacrilege?

I keep looking at it thinking $380 USD for this... compare that to CUSA's x86 product and I just don't understand how CUSA can even exist.

I hate to be the spoilsport again, but all of phoenixkonsole's additions to AROS are closed source, because he doesn't want other people to distribute them with their commercial products. It's only politically correct if he does it, apparently

Without AROS I would be worried about Amiga's future.
Now, if all others fail due miss management, there is AROS.

AROS is my plan C.

@cgutjahr

What "additions" do you speak of? There's nothing here not available in open source form apart from a few bits of software. Things like this are just for people who lack the motivation or knowledge to put things together themselves.

Not a criticism, Im just wondering what it is youre talking about.

@Fishy
You are right about that everyone else could put it together.
Everyone is free to do.
But there is enough inside the iso which allows to keep "it", the ISO, unused by others.
That is what cgutjahr is talking about.

Redo = yes, take = no without an ok

As nice as this might be, I think relying on Linux is bad in the long run for the true enthusiast. This means driver development can stop. Instead what needs to happen is some funding from this needs to be re-invested in driver development so that you can eventually be 100% native again.

This is the problem with the Linux games market, why cater to them when they can boot into Windows to play games since no real standard exists for a Linux gpu api.

I think what is needed is an AROS constortium where when someone donates to a bounty, 90% goes to the actual bounty in question and 10% is funded into a general bounty for doing the work that really needs to get done for the purposes of long term goals like driver development to run on the most hardware available natively.

IMHO

Hi Lou,
don't worry.. everything goes into native development.
Hosted is just a bonbon.
With Wine you don't need to do native Ports. In many cases Windows games have better performance when used in Wine. That is the reason.
