hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : A fix for the audio issue on Sam460ex and AmigaOne 500
   posted by m3x on 26-Feb-2013 22:02:22 (6467 reads)
The problem with the crackling audio on some Sam460ex boards/AmigaOne 500 systems has been identified.

For some reasons, still under investigation, a few boards miss a resistor (R267)
This 0 ohm resistor is responsible for the clock source selection of the AC97 codec, without it the codec runs at a wrong frequency which causes the crackling audio.

Read more ---->

If you have a sound quality problem with your Sam460ex board/AmigaOne system, please check if the R267 resistor is in place or not. See this photo from the bottom of the board:

Alternatively the problem may be mitigated with a special sm502.audio driver which minimizes (but not completely removes) the noise.

Download and try this alternate driver

Explains why it only affected some customers. I assume repair is free if customer chose that option.

Thanks for this information, Max.

If I find the resistor is missing, can I simply bridge it with a blob of solder?
[edit] Forget that, I see it's suggested on the website.[/edit]

I can confirm that I have a board that is missing the resistor.

Thanks,
Jamie

Graffias79,
I can confirm that you have a better camera than M3X.

It's great to find solutions.

Confirmed, at least my Sam has this resistor but the sound problems continue, and I hope after to open the case and remove the board will haven't problmems now..

Very sorry news. Such things are so unconfortable.
I hope this can be fixed in a smooth way for everybody.
Hope for the best.

@Templario:

You write "confirmed", then you contradict the original post saying this cannot be the cause. Do you really mean you have both the resistor AND the problem?

@everyone

This is a pretty simple thing to fix, anyone with knowledge of soldering should be able to do it (and I mean knowledge, not just "has soldered two things together at some time in the past"). I hope Acube will not insist on recalls but rather try to find local solutions for people. If anyone in the Oslo/Akershus area wants help putting in this resistor, PM me. In the Trondheim and Sandefjord areas I can organize it as well, through friends.

guys Chris over at amigans.net has made a benchmark to test out this new feature.

If you've got a 460 check it out at amigans thread

Agreed. I am on the coast in Virginia, USA, and could turn this around for anyone in this area.

Also, while a "solder blob" was mentioned, a thin conductor (even a single strand of copper) soldered on both ends would be more reliable long term.

I have had luck using just a #2 pencil to "draw" the solder pads together. I remembered a few years ago people were using this method to unlock AMD CPUs to allow them to be overclocked, so I thought it was worth a try. It turns out that graphite conducts enough electricity to act as a jumper! Just be careful not to touch the other resisters nearby with your drawing!

I don't understand. I've never heard of a 0 ohm resistor before! What's the point of a resistor that doesn't resist? LOL!

Is a 0 ohm resistor just a technical description for a short or joint? I can't believe they would actually make a resistor that just shorts across. I suppose it does look neat but hidden amongst a hay stack.

I was thinking the same thing, the only thing I can think of is the 0 ohm resistor could act as a fuse.

But I am not an expert so thats only a guess.

It's a short that you can easily change to not be a short for lab purposes. For instance debug pins which require a certain wiring during normal operation but you might want to test something by connecting them otherwise. One 0ohm and one DNI and you're in business. A resistor is the opposite of a conductor, so a bad resistor is a good conductor

Need some?
http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/resistors/chip-resistor-surface-mount/65769?k=zero%20ohm

For a fuse you use a an actual fuse, which has a controlled resistance and heat tolerance (resistance + current gives heat, so it can burn off at the right current). Or a high-coefficient PTC (positive thermal coefficient resistor, which will get more resistive the hotter it gets).

I checked my motherboard today and can now confirm the resistor is missing from my Sam460ex board too

Does the #2 pencil fix work for people? Any success with the alternate driver?

I am not so keen to sent the motherboard back to Vesalia as AO500 is my only working computer ATM and I dare not to play with soldering iron with my limited electronics skills.

YES!!!
Tried your trick (pencil drawing the solder pads together) and now sound is clear no hiss!!!
Juts put a bit of tape to fix the graphite too in the resistor.

THX mate

PS: no it's not an 1st april fools post. Really it works!!!
