Software News   Software News : Experimental Icaros version with Magellan
   posted by paolone on 7-Oct-2013 11:43:30 (3129 reads)
There is a public work-in-progress version of Icaros Desktop available for download. It will be available just for a while since it will be deleted because work is steadily going on and it wouldn't reflect the actual state of the distribution. Applications are not updated, nor are new applications added except one: Directory Opus 5 "Magellan" for AROS x86.

Icaros is a work in progress for brave people only. This version of the distribution is not based on mainstream AROS nightly builds like the ones you're accustomed to, but instead on a more advanced (in many areas) custom version by Deadwood, who's backporting from ABIv1 everything which won't hurt (so much) binary compatibility with current software.
(Please click 'Read more')

This means, in a nutshell, that this work-in-progress version of Icaros Desktop is formally NOT compatible with the mainstream one. You should NOT mix its files with the ones on your hard drive, NOR try to update your current setup with this one. Why? Because 1) it won't work and 2) I won't help you fix the mess since you've been warned. Please download it and install on a spare computer, on a new virtual machine, and test it, test it, test it!

This version of Icaros Desktop is a benchmark for me, for Deadwood, for BSzili, and for everyone involved in the "next Icaros revolution" program which in a few words means: new AROS, new GUI, and a new Experience. We need to catch and fix bugs, compatibility issues, and everything which might bring problems to users. Remember, it's just a TEST, not something we consider suitable for your daily Icaros fun.

By downloading this, you AGREE you have read all the above, and you'll also be expected to help us. How? Simple!

You can download Icaros Desktop 1.5.2 Experimental WIP here:
http://mirrors.lezard-visuel.com/icaros/aros-experimental.iso

If you find a bug, please test it again on your regular installation and, if you spot differences, don't forget to tell us. Where? Easy.

You can report bugs and other issues in our little on line bug tracker here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqFI-CEPBaAkdER3OU1USHExZmRudzZPMlB0QU1tZ1E&usp=sharing#gid=0

DO NOT FORGET!

DO NOT, under ANY circumstance, mix executables and other binaries of this version with your regular Icaros 1.5.2 installation or you'll mess it up completely. Keep the testing environment separated from your "production" one.

DO NOT FILL THIS THREAD WITH BUGS, use the bug tracker instead. It should work also from AROS OWB. HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS are very WELCOME instead.

Can I use it to congratulate you all? WONDERFUL WORK, KEEP IT UP!

I will try to test it (my pc is an HP laptop, so I don´t know if this will run) and report issues and impressions.

Could you detail a bit more the improvements or changes over the "regular" Aros? even they are not (completely) present in this version.

Congratulations and kudos to all involved!

I've tested this briefly and I must say that this is something I wanted for a long time =)
The speed for Magellan compared to Wanderer (or Workbench for that matter) is much better, the system acts like being on steroids.

I'll keeping my eyes on this development closely!
Many thanks for all involved!

@vision and @olaf

Thank you so much. Vision, you can try to see if it works, and eventually report issues. If it wouldn't work directly, please consider using VirtualBox or VMware Player 4, 5 or 6 to test it as well.

@Develin

Great to hear this. Yes, Magellan feels considerably faster than Wanderer. Anyway, I hope you'll spend some of your time reporting all the bugs you eventually find in our bugtracker (it's a simple google document, no registration required).
