Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : New Replacement Workbench 3.1 Disk Sets www.amigakit.com
posted by amigakit on 3-Nov-2014 21:55:56 (4320 reads)
Our customers have regularly been asking for replacement Workbench floppy disk sets since their older disks have either become corrupted or worn out due to age. About a year ago, we approached our friends at Cloanto to enquire about a possible solution. As a result, we are pleased to announce the availability of Workbench 3.1 Floppy Disk Set

This new distribution comes with some minor enhancements and updates:

- Updated C/Version (Y2K patch)
- Addition of Libs/workbench.library (for A-4000T 3.1 ROMs and 3.X ROMs)
- Updated S/Startup-Sequence (for 3.X ROMs)
- Updated Installer 44.10 and FastFileSystem 45.9 (to support larger disks)
- Installer itself is now part of the system installation (inside the Utilities directory)

As you may notice these disk sets are also compatible with the Amiga 4000T (workbench.library on floppy) so there is no requirement any longer to have two distributions of Workbench 3.1 media.

Nice for those who need it, either for their Amiga or for emulation.

Seems odd to license it from your friends at Cloanto rather than your friends at Hyperion though.

Wasn't that show cancelled though? (evil grin)

Given that Amiga.org is now a sister site of Amigaworld or vice versa, and considering we have few comments so far on this topic here, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to link to the Amiga.org version:

I understand it's a press release, but that's a bit over the top, isn't it?

Here's cloanto's press release on the matter.

Great News! Maybe I'm biased, but I really need a replacement set of disks!

@ DarthX

honestly what classic user today would not need these nowadays! ordered mine and I'm grateful Cloanto & Amigakit did this as it's a miracle my originals have lasted this long with no problems when dvd's I created less than a decade ago are corrupted.

I was wondering why this wasn't done sooner. Good to hear. Maybe AmigaOS 3.5 and 3.9 versions are next.

OS3.9 is probably impossible (due to who produced it), but what would be nice is something beyond that based on ClassicWB for OS3.1 (or similar) that provides the latest versions of files combined with a nice looking Workbench with the types of utilities that we now take for granted.

As I mentioned in the A.org comments, I would love to see an AmigaOS3.10 version released on CDROM perhaps with some extra software to fill up more of the space on the CD. If that can't be done because approval and files cannot be obtained from Haage & Partner, then the next best alternative would be an executable file that checks your computer's CD/DVD drive for the AmigaOS3.9 CD and your hard drive for the Boing Bag 1 & 2 files, then it would perform a new installation that would include 3.9, BB 1 & 2, plus Boing Bags 3 & 4, and all of the latest and best system files that continue to be updated or added by developers even to this day.

That way no approvals would be needed, except from the people who are actually still writing updated and new files for Boing Bags 3 & 4 and beyond, as no official AmigaOS files would be included in the distribution of this new executable file that performs the installation of AmigaOS3.10.

Of course it could not be marketed with the name AmigaOS3.10, without the permission of Hyperion (and maybe one or two other entities that have prior agreements in place) as only they have the right to further develop and sell versions using the name "AmigaOS".

It takes a good bit of work and expertise to get the best AmigaOS3.x experience installed on high end 68k Amiga computers and FPGA clones, or emulated environments. I appreciate and applaud the continuing efforts of users and developers still working on improvements beyond Boing Bag 4. I just wish there were one installer script that would put all of the best AmigaOS3.x components together with one click.

@ Darrin

As far as I know, the latest AmigaOS 3.9 CD-ROMs were not the originals, but they had the licence to produce such copies. The main difference is the color on the CD-ROM.

Hyperion can use the Amiga trademarks "Solely for the purposes of marketing, distributing and making available AmigaOS 4 and any hardware required or desired to operate with AmigaOS 4".

Per the above, Hyperion cannot give that permission because they don't have it themselves.
