Perhaps, AFTER Altivec version is DONE, the author could look at DSP instructions of PPC440&460 to see if they are usefull for speeding up video.

So, the latest RadeonHD drivers do not give enough acceleration?
Or is mplayer lacking the support to use RadeonHD drivers fully?
Or is this JUST meant to be a more generic solution.

The radeonHD drivers give an enormous speed up to displaying videos, codecs such as mpeg2 where the main bottleneck is display run much much faster, over 40fps at full 1080p HD.
However the H264 codec achieves very high compression rates, (which is great for low bandwidth streaming) and so decompressing takes lot of CPU power, so some H264 encoding schemes don't quite make it on even on an X1000 with Radeon 2.4 drivers and a fast card.
